Adam & Tonya at New Mexico
User Groups -- Tonya and I have never traveled to the
southwest United States, so we're particularly looking forward to a
trip to visit not one, not two, but three New Mexico-based Macintosh
user groups in early May. At 7:00 PM on 03-May-05, I'll be speaking in
Albuquerque to the AppleQuerque Macintosh User Group. Then, on the
afternoon of 04-May-05, I'll address the Los Alamos Macintosh User
Group, and at 7:00 PM that evening, the Santa Fe Macintosh User Group.
I'm planning to talk primarily about iPhoto and wireless security;
Tonya will be on hand to chat about Take Control and electronic
publishing in general. If you're in the area, come say hello!

PHP local User Groups diffusion
initiative
04/27/2004 04:34 AMThe PHP User Groups diffusion is an initiative to help existing groups
gain visibility among PHP users of the same region. The PHP Classes
site is very popular world wide, being accessed by tens of thousands
of users from more than 130 countries. The idea is to use this fact to
provide greater exposure to regional groups, overcoming the lack of
budget of most PHP user groups, unlike other languages user groups
that are backed by large companies.

RNC protestors and their rights
RNC protestors and their rights
08/27/2004 01:34 PM
UPI via The Washington Times reports that the Weather
Underground are planning some action during the RNC. UPI
says:
United Press
International
"These people are trained in kidnapping techniques,
bombmaking and building improvised munitions," the source said.
"They're very bad people..."
Someone who asked not to be
named emailed me and says that they heard that, "it's planned on being
a nonviolent action. Something about leaflets and random covert
protesters." If this is indeed the case, there is a pretty high
likelihood of some really wound up police running into some pretty
innocent people. If you are at risk of looking like a risk to the
police, make sure you read about your rights. (

via Boing BoingUPDATE: An anonymous tipster sez "this
pamphlet was done by the wonderful Katya Komisaruk over at the Just Cause Law Collective. At
her site, lawcollective.org, there's the pamphlet and tons of other
info about how to not lose your rights when dealing with the po.
(Including Komsiaruk's book, set up much like the pamphlet, 'Beat the
Heat.' Komisaruk applied and was accepted to Harvard Law School while
in federal prison for anti-nuke demonstrations. She went to HLS while
on parole and graduated with honors. Now she's one of the most active
anarchist lawyers in the U.S."
UPDATE: Anonymous old media journalist who thinks the UPI story is
bunk: "my theory is that the republicans are going to have their own
anarchists there a la the rei
chstag fire...."

Free the protestors
Free the protestors
07/22/2004 09:44 AMI haven't seen the "freedom of speech pen" in person, but from the
news reports, it looks repellant. I understand the security concerns
about the Convention — frankly, I'm literally losing sleep over
the prospect of a large scale (= nuke it in suitcase) attack on Boston
— but there has to be a better way of honoring the duty to
dissent than to put citizens behind double fences topped by razor
wire. Isn't this country all about saying that freedom is worth the
risk?...
