The latest exploit is a file called "img1big.gif" that decompresses into a malevolent Browser Helper Object (BHO) that captures your financial transactions. According to a report from SANS, this BHO: watches for HTTPS (secure) access to URLs of several dozen banking and financial sites in multiple countries. When an outbound HTTPS connection is made to such a URL, the BHO then grabs any outbound POST/GET data from within IE before it is encrypted by SSL. When it captures data, it creates an outbound HTTP connection to http://www.refestltd.com/cgi-bin/yes.pl and feeds the captured data to the script found at that location. There are only two choices left with IE: Either don't browse the web with it, or don't use it for financial transactions. Thank goodness there are choices like Mozilla, Firefox and Opera, for those of us still chained to Windows....

Sony vs. The PSP Importers - A Comedy

Sony vs. The PSP Importers - A Comedy 06/24/2005 04:03 PM

batboy.gifWelcome to cuckoo world! Sony, in all their majestic wisdom, has decided to hunt down and kill PSP importers in the UK. Let's read this, shall we? "The Japanese electronics giant Sony is demanding that companies importing its hotly anticipated PlayStation Portable to Britain reveal their customers' identities so the equipment can be tracked down."

Now, why would they do this? Because they are crazy? Because Sony CEO Sir Howard Lancelot Stringer Esq. has finally gone all Howard Hughes on us? Are those purchasers of Japanese PSPs in there on the Rainy Isle using them to mount an offensive against the Sony Yakuza stronghold or are they attempting to pay $400 for a game device. Next week: Sony kills and eats babies.

Sony bid to stop grey imports [Guardian]

UPDATE - Ok, so they don't eat babies so much.

London importers cash in on PSP delay

London importers cash in on PSP delay 03/19/2005 03:27 AM
Londoners who can't wait for the release of Sony's new PlayStation Portable (PSP) to be released are helping importers sell the portable gaming system for more than twice the amount of what consumers will be paying in the United States. Sony's European launch of the PSP was delayed by several months in order to ensure the company can supply enough units for its North American customers. "We were originally hoping for an end of fiscal year launch, but now that's not going to be the case," a Sony spokesman said on Tuesday. "It is likely to be a matter of a few months rather than a few weeks -- it's a matter of allocation." As a result of the PSP launch delay, retailers on London's Tottenham Court Road are selling the systems for £300. Electronics Exchange, a London second-hand retailer, said it has sold about a dozen PSPs in the last two weeks for £300 each. Another shop in London's consumer electronics retail district, MBA Technologies, receives its PSPs from Asian wholesalers and sells them under the counter. "We sell plenty of these -- usually 10 or 20 a weekend," said a salesman at the store.

Foreigners and Japanese customs

Foreigners and Japanese customs 04/09/2004 03:56 PM

A lot of people ask me about Japanese customs. They learn the formal way to hand business cards, they bow deeply when they meet Japanese and they call me "Ito-san." Stop that. It's silly. To some Japanese, the awkward foreigners trying to please their hosts by acting Japanese may look cute, but more likely than not, you'll get a A for effort but you'll be forever the silly foreigner in their minds. It's only the extremely intolerant xenophobe who would really want a foreigner to really act Japanese and you don't want to be hanging out with those anyway. Keep an eye out for indicators of discomfort but bring the flair of your own culture with you.

Rather than trying to act Japanese, I suggest that people visiting Japan be sensitive and aware of the nuances in the interactions. It is more about timing, loudness, space and smiles than it is about how your hold your business card or calling people "Ito-san." When in doubt, shut up and listen. When smiled at, smile back. If you're freaking someone out, back off instead of continuing your interrogation. All of which I believe is not unique to being a foreigner in Japan. The more important Japan specific social behaviors involve cleanliness like taking off your shoes in homes and washing your body before and not taking your towel when entering the bath and not being stinky.

Caveat: If you're meeting someone for the first time, in a very formal setting, and you only have one shot, doing the step-by-step from the "How to Impress Japanese" book is probably a good idea. My comments above apply mostly to normal social situations.

UPDATE: I think many people were offended by this post. ;-) Please read the comments for an interesting discussion.

Forbes.com - Every month a huge corporation gets dinged with the global equivalent of a speeding ticket. In December Sun Microsystems paid $291,000 to settle federal charges that it shipped computer equipment that had military applications to Egypt and China. Later that month Honeywell paid $36,000 in fines for selling a restricted chemical in Mexico. In February Morton International paid $647,500 as penance for shipping protected chemicals to Singapore and Taiwan.

Text Link Brokers

Text Link Brokers 06/16/2004 11:56 AM

Buy and Sell Text Links ads: These guys buy and sell text links from one site to another, with the specific intent to increase PageRank.

We specialize in brokering text link Advertisements. Text Link Ads on popular, highly ranked web sites help increase the traffic to a site from the search engines along with contributing direct traffic. In contrast Banner Ads or PPC Advertisements will only climb in price with each click, while contributing nothing to search engine ranks.

Links from pages with current PageRank of 4 go for $5 - 50 per month while links from pages with a PageRank of 9 go for $500 - $2,500 per month. I'd be interested to know who the 9's are.

I just checked and the PageRank of the Gadgetopia home page is just 5, so I'm not sitting on a gold mine or anything. For the sake of comparison, CNN's home page is a 9, while Boing Boing and scripting.com — arguably the two most popular blogs around — are both 7. I'm shooting for a 6 one of these days.
