Investigating Novell Kernel Services

Investigating Novell Kernel Services

Investigating Novell Kernel Services 07/15/2004 05:18 AM

A couple of months ago I asked if Novell's new Open Enterprise Server (or any other Linux distribution) would be enabled to run NetWare Loadable Modules, the applications that run within a NetWare server. We were briefly led to believe that this might be possible with an "NLM to ELF" tool, ELF (Executable and Linking Format) being the format for Linux code that can be ported among different distributions. If an NLM could be turned into an ELF format, then it could be directly ported to Linux. Sadly, it was a simple case of misunderstanding - there's an "ELF to NLM" tool, but not the reverse.

Investigating New Blogging Software 06/22/2004 01:18 AM

After all of my other connectivity problems as of late, now Radio is acting up and not publishing my posts when I post them. As far as I can tell, Userland's upgrade focus is on Manila, not Radio, and while I love using blogging software that integrates a news aggregator, I'm getting tired of having major problems with Radio every few months.

I think it may finally be time to switch, so posting may be light here (unintentionally or not!) while I figure out my next move.

France Investigating Amazon's DVD Sales
Practices
04/23/2004 10:59 AM
In a fairly cryptic note, Amazon has admitted that they're being investigated in France for their DVD sales practices. That seems a little strange, but this other article suggests that Amazon's warehouses were actually raided in search of illegal DVDs. Amazon, of course, isn't known for selling bootlegs, so chances are its a situation similar to the case in the UK where Amazon was investigated for daring to buy cheaper (but perfectly legal) CDs overseas and sell them in Europe. Apparently, the French also like to keep their media prices artificially high.

NY AG Buys Google Ads On Keywords Of

NY AG Buys Google Ads On Keywords Of
Company He's Investigating
04/06/2005 06:28 PM
While most US courts have determined that there's no trademark infringement in buying a search engine advertisement based on a trademarked keyword, there are still some cases going forward. So, it's a bit surprising (though, amusing) to find out that New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer was caught buying trademarked keywords promoting his campaign for governor. The keywords in question were for AIG, the big insurance conglomerate that Spitzer has been investigating for fraud. From a publicity standpoint, perhaps it makes sense. People searching on AIG may associate Spitzer's name with the company, but this is a bit trickier than someone just trying to get some publicity off of a popular keyword. Spitzer now claims it was a mistake, and the ads have been removed. Of course, what's to stop someone else from buying the same ads, and linking them to Spitzer's campaign site? In fact, at the time of this posting, it looks like some random advertiser has picked up on this story and is advertising some random anti-Google site, claiming that Eliot Spitzer and Google "overstep their boundaries." Once again, people seem to be trying to make a point through popular keywords.
