Sony Hi-MD Memory Card Reader

Sony Hi-MD Memory Card Reader 08/10/2004 09:26 PM

himd_memory imageSony makes an interesting attempt at pushing their new Hi-MD format (for "High Capacity MiniDisc"), which for those of you that don't know, has a 1 gigabyte capacity. It's called the "MCMD-R1," and for good reason. What reason that is, I do not know. The aptly named device, or whatever, attaches to a Hi-MD recorder via a USB cable. Pushing the "copy" button, images will be copied from a memory card to the Hi-MD disc. An interesting idea, but I personally find the numerous drawbacks to be...drawbacky. First of all, it apparently only does images. You can't connect even it to a PC's USB port - this makes the sub $80 device quite expensive. Also, the reader does support nearly every media under the sun, but it can only read from one card at a time.

If I were Sony, I'd instead make this into a CD drive. You could press the button, and it would copy the disc's contents onto a Hi-MD. But this is on the very fringes of legality as we know it. Oh well.

Sony to Launch Smaller PStwo

Sony to Launch Smaller PStwo 09/17/2004 12:44 PM

Reuters is reporting that Sony intends to unveil a new smaller version of the Playstation two next week, called the PStwo. Like the successful shrinky-dink PSone version of the first Playstation, the PStwo will maintain all the same functionality (although who knows about the inputs and outputs) and will play all the same games as the older PS2. As usual, if anyone has pictures they'd like to share, we're always happy to maintain your anonymity.

I would also expect information about the PSP to solidify next week, too, with pricing and launches dates to be shored up for both Japan and elsewhere. My favorite PSP launch title so far? "Fight Club Mahjongg." I'm so not joking.
Read - Sony to Launch Smaller PS2 Console Oct. 26 [Reuters (Yahoo)]

Update: It's probably best to clarify that this isn't set in stone from Sony yet. They did register the PStwo name, though, so I would expect a new console is likely, although we may not hear about it Tuesday.

Sony Style PSP Launch Party

Sony Style PSP Launch Party 03/22/2005 04:46 PM

psp_party.jpgSo sure, Sony is throwing a launch party for the PSP at the Sony Style store in Manhattan tomorrow night, but the real news is: you might just get to meet Carson Daly. (I know!?!?) Actually, Danger Mouse is supposed to be developing, packaging, and delivering sonic science at the party, too, which is pretty cool (I've yet to buy into the DM hype, but sometimes a live performance is all it takes).

Oh, and if you're among the first 500 to arrive, you'll be able to purchase a PSP and a game at midnight. It's worth a shot (and I'll be there, which is almost as good as Carson Daly, right?) Cool Hunting has the flyer and details.

PSP Launch Party in NYC [CoolHunting]

Update: Brian writes,"You mentioned the launch party in Manhattan, but not the one in San Francisco. It's at Sony Metreon, 101 4th Street in the Playstation store (not Sony Style) at 12:00 AM March 24, or tomorrow night. :) Price/opportunities for customers are the same, I'd imagine."

Exhaustive Review of Sony Ericsson GC82
EDGE PC Card
04/16/2004 01:12 PM
Brian Jepson reviews the Sony Ericsson EDGE card to the nth degree, including configuration advice and photos: This in-depth, multi-page review at Jiwire (our content partner) tells the results of Brian's real-world testing of EDGE service over AT&T Wireless's network in several cities, provides an explanation of how EDGE works (and why performance might vary), and is fully illustrated with screen captures and photos. Brian also provides the information you need to use the card with Mac OS X and Linux, which aren't directly supported by Sony Ericsson. A small download, a few code changes, recompile, and voila! You've got high-speed cell data on unsupported computers. While $80 a month may seem high for a consumer-level price, for business people who need ubiquitous data access, EDGE is really the fastest best option when it works. By January 2005, Verizon Wireless will have its 1xEvDO in potentially dozens of cities, while AT&T Wireless should have debuted UMTS in four or five towns....

pspupdater.jpg imageThe Register is reporting that Sony will be launching a new music service specifically for its PSP portable gaming system. The new download service is supposed to be in place by March here to coincide with the launch of Sony's player. Tony Smith speculates that the service, once in place, could just as easily be used to push video content down to the device, which doesn't have a hard drive, but can accept flash MemoryStick in 1-2GB sizes—plenty big for a couple of movies.

I think if Sony's got a shot at the iPod, the PSP is it—it can do almost everything you'd want to do while on the road, including productivity stuff (if they release a keyboard).

Sony delays PSP European launch until
summer
02/05/2005 10:10 PM
Sony has announced that the release date of its new Playstation Portable in Europe and most of Asia will be delayed until summer. March 24th has been announced as the release date for the handheld device in North America. Sony says European gaming enthusiasts, as well as citizens from most of Asia except Japan, will have to wait until sometime in the summer to get their hands on the new system due to high demand and low supply in those parts of the world. "We doubt our customers would be satisfied in releasing them with insufficient inventories," said Kenichi Fukunaga, a spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment. "By summer, we will be able to manage to meet global demand as our production capacity will be raised to two million units a month," Fukunaga said. "But under the current conditions, it is difficult for us to go ahead with the planned schedule."

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,
Including Sony T3 (Rawr!)
08/30/2004 09:56 AM

Sony_DSC-T3.jpg imageGott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar 4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a 7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.

The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the day.
