Gadget Overload

Gadget Overload 04/26/2004 04:07 PM
We've all heard stories about convergence when it comes to gadgets, but for many people, all we've experienced is the nee d for a larger and larger gadget bag (and a corresponding increase in chiropractor bills). Of course, even worse than the gadgets themselves, may be each of the different chargers needed to make sure the devices actually run. The question, though, is whether or not this is a temporary state where the possible future we all like to talk about just isn't here yet - or if we're really moving towards a world where more devices is the norm, rather than the other way around. Right now, though, the situation leads to somewhat comic (assuming you're not the person involved) situations like the following: "After downloading some massive high-res files from the digital camera to my laptop, I needed to send them to my coworker's laptop. Of course, I didn't have a wireless local-area network (WLAN) card for that old IBM. Neither laptop had a disk drive. The PC didn't recognize a USB stick. There was no high-speed access at my funky hotel in downtown San Francisco, nor could I log the laptop into the LAN in the convention center's pressroom. And, the pressroom's dial-up connection took so long, the laptop's batteries died, the adapter being back at the hotel room."

RoamAD and Reach fire up city wi-fi

15.04.2004 By PETER GRIFFIN

RoamAD has resurrected plans for a wireless internet network in Auckland's inner city, but this time it will supply only the technology, leaving the service to be run by growing "wi-fi" operator Reach Wireless.

RoamAD has also received a US$100,000 ($155,000) loan from Silicon Valley-based chip maker Intel, a small amount given the multi-billion-dollar investment arsenal of Intel Capital, but an endorsement of RoamAD's technology nevertheless.

Reach Wireless, which is backed by telecoms entrepreneur Chris Jones, will offer wireless internet access in a 3km-square section of the inner city spanning apartment buildings, cafes and offices, using the network built by RoamAD.

Previously the plan had been for RoamAD to run the network itself and seek a partner in a large telco to market and service the network. But no deal eventuated and RoamAD has spent the last year focusing on developing its technology. "RoamAD is an equipment vendor and we need to sell our technology to customers like Reach," said RoamAD chairman Martin Levy.

One way to manage your email overload... 12/17/2004 06:33 PM
...is to simply make it someone else's problem. Here's the Out Of Office -message from a colleague:

Thank-you for your recent email.

Your message has been deleted from CutBoy's inbox, and all trace of it removed from our server. He has no way of knowing the message even existed.

So, if you still think that he will find the contents of your mail important you are welcome to re-mail at a future date at your convienience.

Sincerely,

Mail assistant to CB

I love it - resending the email when you even don't know when the person is back causes a significant cognitive load to the person sending it. Therefore, only the really important messages will be resent, and thus, the problem of filtering out the good email from the bad is distributed to the senders. Whee, practical applications of distributed computing using human brains :-)

Extension

An interesting article on using Andrei Zmievski's Overload extension which comes standard with PHP since 4.3.0. The overload extension defines three "magic" functions; __call(), __set() and __get(). If we place these in a class then declare (outside the class) that it is overloaded, PHP will use the magic functions if it finds that a member variable or function does not exist. PS: On another topic, there will probably be a patch release to fix bugs in PHP 4.3.0, so if you haven't upgraded yet, don't bother until the patch comes out. "zeldman.hgr"

Data Overload: The Hidden Killer

Data Overload: The Hidden Killer 11/19/2003 08:11 AM
Well, the latest internet/computer related illness we all have to worry about is New Economy Depression Syndrome which comes complete with the nice acronym NEDS. According to this article it can "cause anxiety, fatigue, difficulty in making decisions or concentrating, sleep disturbances, loneliness and isolation." It's not, as you might think from the name, felt by those who got slammed financially when the bubble burst, but by those who can't keep up with all the information available to them. It's the classic information overload problem. The concept of NEDS, though, was first created by the guy who wrote that classic of pop business books, The Killer App Is Love. Now he's paid someone do some studies for him to prove that NEDS isn't just a figment of his own imagination. The results seem to show some correlation, but doesn't do much to prove causation.

Great item on Jeffrey Veen's blog last week -- a helpful tech tip for compulsively-downloading MP3 blog junkies:
[H]ow to keep up? For a while, I just visited a couple of interesting and well written mp3 blogs, but then they'd link to a couple more, and I'd start reading those. And then that happened a few dozen more times. My desire to stay in touch was in conflict with my increasingly limited free time.

Wget to the rescue. It's a utility for unix/linux/etc. that goes and gets stuff from Web and FTP servers -- kind of like a browser but without actually displaying what it downloads. And since it's one of those awesomely configurable command line programs, there is very little it can't do. So I run wget, give it the URLs to those mp3 blogs, and let it scrape all the new audio files it finds. Then I have it keep doing that on a daily basis, save everything into a big directory, and have a virtual radio station of hand-filtered new music. Neat.

Referrer Spam

Referrer Spam 11/18/2003 12:51 PM

Gessaman: It appears that these sites, using a clean little weblog as a front, are hosting a large amount of porn.

Wow.  To me, it looks like a lot of effort for so little gain, but clearly I am missing something.  But it any case, the comments on idly's blog entry are worth reading, as is the update (scroll down to see it) to Mark Pilgrim's blog entry on spam.

robots.txt vs referrer spam

robots.txt vs referrer spam 12/02/2003 01:56 AM

Many people have been doing this for a while, but as a public service announcement for those who may not have thought to do this:

A site can set up a robots.txt file which tells robots (which includes Google) to not index a particular file or directory.

Here's mine.  It is pretty easy to do.

Will it stop referrer spam?  No.  Many spammers are quite satisfied with fractional percent return on investment.  But it allows you to opt out.

I hate referrer spam 03/06/2004 01:59 AM

These people/sites really piss me off because they've been spamming my referrers:

xsonnerie.com
riaa.com

And... I won't be voting for John Kerry

blog.johnkerry.com

Those three sites have been spamming my referrers for the past month or so...

They just got added to my referrer spam list in my referrer scripts... oh, I also don't montior blogspot.com sites anymore thanks to the recent rash of weird blogspot.com referrer spammings that made the circle lately...

Referrer Spam Tool

Referrer Spam Tool 09/06/2004 06:24 PM

Ever find referrers in your logs that make no sense? Sites that couldn't possibly have a link to your site?

I found this product online, which is the first tool I've found to accomplish r eferrer spamming. No link or name because I don't want to promote it.

[This app] is a Windows-based mass referrer spammer, which means that it will make a connection to a buttload of sites of your choosing with any referrer URL and User-Agent that you specify.

This accomplishes several things. Firstly, it generates webmaster traffic from webmasters checking their referral statistics. Secondly, it boosts your link popularity and thereby your Google PR, because a lot of sites have public referral stats with linked entries.

How did I find it? Checking my referrers, of course. They counted on me being narcissistic , and it worked.

At least by calling it a "spammer," they don't try to put lipstick on a pig.

Blog and Forum automatic submission

Blog and Forum automatic submission
scripts
12/19/2004 03:34 PM

A note to the spammers and potential spammers that come across this: if comment spam is so effective in boosting search engine rankings, then why is this blog entry so much better ranked than the submission scripts are? You’d think that if they were even a little bit effective the makers of the tools would be able to get a better ranking than I have.

Spammers are buying ever-more sophisticated tools to facilitate their comment spamming. These tools can find comment scripts, bypass many protection measures, and submit comments with alarming speed.

Perhaps we could make a dent in the comment spam by attacking these tools. Find shareware and “webmaster script” sites where these tools are sold, distributed, and marketed and get them shut down. A search for “blog submission scripts” will turn up lots of links to products (and now, I’m sure, this blog entry) that are designed to spam comments. Track these down, contact the places they’re marketed, like share*it and for the software to be removed from their catalogs.

After finding a spam package that’s being sold on share*it, I contacted them about removing it. I’ve removed the names and links to the product, because I don’t want to make it any easier for spammers to find products like this.

One of the pieces of software sold on your site is designed to spam weblog comments and message boards. Product ID [removed] is described and marketed as a blog spamming tool at [removed] Please don’t continue to add to the spam problem, and remove this product from your service.

If bloggers are powerful enough to take down a TV news anchor, I’d imagine that a concerted effort to choke off distribution sources would be successful as well.

Asking Mail Servers About Spam?

Asking Mail Servers About Spam? 11/25/2002 10:11 AM
Asking Mail Servers About Spam? I see that Dave's looking for this: A feature for a mail server? What if every mail server supported a new feature. An XML-RPC interface with one entry point. It takes one parameter, a user name and returns a struct containing a boolean. The boolean is true if there is such a user on that machine. It's a struct so more info can be returned later. My email program could send a message to the server each piece of mail came from. Hey you got someone with this name, and do they send out spam? If the answer is no, filter it to the bit bucket.Maybe I'm missing something or it's too early in the morning, but couldn't we ask the servers if they know about this person sending me the spam. I have a feeling that most of the spam I get comes from made-up people. [ Go ] This actually exists already in the SMTP / POP3 spec although it isn't XML-RPC'd of course. One approach to do this is to simulate an SMTP session to the server and then use the RCPT TO smtp command to see if the mail server will accept email for this user. Please note that this idea isn't mine, I got it from Mastering PHP 4.1 which is a pretty kicking book (and where I pretty much stole this sentence from). [ Code ] I don't think that implementing this is all that hard and an XML-RPC interface could be wrapped around it easily enough. It is a damn intriguing idea and one that would be easy enough to implement in a webmail client. One problem with it though is that a lot of email address names aren't true accounts but contain metadata for bounce processing i.e. 23232 @ company.com is generally handled by a bounce routine so any replies to it trigger unsubscribe or something else. Note: This isn't really a problem since if there isn't an account then it's probably spam but it would blow up a lot of list serve like processes. Also there isn't anything to stop spammers from setting up their own mail servers. What it would address is header forging which is a huge problem.

Jim Winstead speaks about good practice for MySQL and PHP at MySQL 2004. Looking down this it appears that I've just duplicated Jim's slides, not sure how much value that adds if you can just go an get the slides yourself.

Some of the items he mentions include things we've all heard over and over:

  • don't trust user data
  • watch for SQL injection points
  • benchmark overall page load times
  • don't use * (asterisk) in SQL selects
  • use the right storage for the right data (i.e. don't put files in the database)
  • and much more...

O'Reilly: Object Overloading in PHP 5 06/17/2005 03:32 PM
Using the object system in PHP5 just has a more refined feel that in previous versions of PHP, and one of the features that contributes to this is object overloading. In thi s new article from the O'Reilly Network, they explain to you what object overloading is and how you can really benefit from it.

A fine implementation of the object-overloading paradigm has found its way into PHP version 5. Thi s article explores the possibilities of the overload methods __call(), __set(), and __get(). After explaining the basic theory of overloading, it dives straight into the topic by using two practical examples: first, implementing persistable classes, and second, figuring out a way to realize dynamic getter and setter methods. If you do not yet know what these terms mean, don't be afraid--it will become clear to you when you see the example code.

On a basic level, obj ect overloading consists of two things: method and property overloading. They focus on the first, showing you how to create a "catch-all" call that will fail a bit more gracefully when certain things happen - like calling a method that doesn't exist...

Operator Overloading in Visual Basic
2005
07/15/2004 01:41 AM
Operator overloading is a powerful tool that allows you to redefine many operators (addition, subtraction, and so on) within classes and structures, making them more useful and relevant to the class or structure in question. With the release of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, you can now create and use overloaded operators in your code. The use of operator overloading allows for much cleaner, readable code, and additionally makes it much easier to interact with some types in the .NET Framework that already expose overloaded operators (for example, System.Data.SqlTypes or DateTime). This article discusses the scenarios in which operating overloading can be a very useful tool for you when you write applications using Visual Basic. It shows examples of how you can introduce operator overloading into your classes and structures in such a way as to make those objects act in statements as if they were intrinsic types (such as String, Integer, and so on).

What's to stop people from spamming Feedster and other blog search engines? At what point does a blog entry cease to become "real" and crosses the line into shilling for a product or company?

I found this today. While searching for a particular term over at Feedster, I found several "blog entries" that were nothing but thinly veiled advertisements. They had the veneer of independent thought, but as you read them, it was obvious that they were pitching one thing or another. So these people essentially spammed Feedster.

And where is the line? On this site, we've talked glowingly about EditPlus , PowerGrep, PHPRunner, Image Genius, and lots o f books, but they were honest representations of how we thought. And we stood to gain nothing by posting them.

Is that the litmus test? If you stand to gain nothing, then it's okay? But if you have a financial interest, then it's not okay?

We tend to look at the "blogosphere" as this pure environment, but it's bound to get crapped up by spam sooner or later. It's already happened for penis enlargement. Everything is bound to follow.

Even my bl0g is getting spam! 10/28/2003 11:09 PM
Well, it was s upposed to happen sooner or later. My blog is getting spammed. That makes turning the comment feature off very tempting, but until it becomes unmanageable I won't. I appreciate the comments too much :-)The other possible...

Replacing Perl Scripts with PHP Scripts

Replacing Perl Scripts with PHP Scripts 11/26/2002 05:12 AM
With the introduction of version 4.2, PHP has started supporting a new SAPI (Server Application Programming Interface) called CLI (Command Line Interface). This facility was introduced to help developers create small shell applications (scripts) with PHP. So, now you can kiss Perl goodbye forever. -- Jayesh Jain

Blog spam... I give

Blog spam... I give 12/24/2003 12:07 PM
I already have the MT-Blacklist plugin installed, but manual updates to the blacklist aren't cutting it--too much would've-been-caught crap's making it through. Time to break down and automatically update the blacklist. Luckily someone's already got a tool. (Yeah, it's python, but I honestly don't care what's in the Happy Fun Ball so long as it works) At least I get comments mailed so the crap gets seen quickly and doesn't linger, but I'd rather it not be up in the first place....

Rising bl0g-spam

Rising bl0g-spam 11/06/2003 05:07 PM
While it's sad, and more than a little pathetic, blog spam, like all the other sorts of spam, seems to be on the rise. I've been getting more and more comments posted that aren't anything more than links to some pill site or other. Having some of the antispam MT plugins helps, but still, there's a bunch I need to go hand-delete. (After which I generally IP-ban the poster, which has worked as well to cut down on the spam, though I worry about the collateral damage) It's really sad, though. Yeah, it means more work for me, and more maintenance,...
