Leadership and authority

Leadership and authority 09/07/2004 08:42 AM

I was just on a panel with Jimmy "Jimbo" Wales, the founder of Wikipedia. We've been talking the last few days about communities and it turns out the #wikipedia IRC channel is about the same size as #joiito. (approx 100 people online. Wikipedia has many other sub channels though so in aggregate they are much bigger...) Anyway, Jimmy noticed that I didn't have a Wikipedia entry and he decided to go to his community and see if he could get an article written while we were on the channel.

#wikipedia
-- Jimbo has joined #wikipedia
Jimbo: Just a fun experiment...
Jimbo: Joichi Ito is here at this conference, on the same panel with me.
Jimbo: But we apparently have no article about him.
Jimbo: A challenge: in the next hour, how good of an article can we create?
Member1: '''Joichi Ito''' is a [[person]]. {{bio-stub}}
Jimbo: Yes, he uses wikipedia too. But he's famous and important and we need a bio.
Jimbo: I have to go, because our panel is about to start again...
Jimob: But please, remind people as they wander in here, and let's see what happens.
Member2: who the fuck is Joichi Ito
Member3; Member2: write an article and find out
Member2: Jimbo can write the article if it's so important
Member3: someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today
Member1: The easy way out would be to grab an article from another page, cross out the name and write 'Joichi Ito' over it in crayon
It's the same on my channel, but leadership/foundership has nothing to do with authority. In fact, trying to exercise authority often has exactly the opposite effect. The article did end up getting written though. ;-)

Leadership Lessons from JetBlue 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

Norm Brodsky wrote a wonderful article today:

Street Smarts: Learning From JetBlue

One day flying JetBlue, I found myself being served by David Neeleman, the airline's founder. When was the last time you met your customers and asked how you could better serve them?

Truly a fantastic lesson on how to stay in touch with your customers... and not just the really big ones... all of them...

I've worked in environments before where the big guys (or gals) said they wanted to get in touch with the customers more often so they were going to do something like a) ride along with sales people randomly, or b) go cold-call on customers on their own, or c) go visit with the troops when they weren't ready, or d) spend some time on the production line, or e) the list goes on. But...

I've never worked somewhere where the big guys and gals actually followed through on their promises to do so... At JetBlue, it's nice to know the big guy follows through.

In Free Software development, we sometimes see a smart person alone creates a useful program, and as its popularity grows, more people become interested and get involved. The response of the original author to the growing popularity at this stage plays a critical role in whether the program continues to succeed or fail, or end up in multiple forks, due to different visions of the original author and the new people. What is the best strategy on the part of the original author to maintain the community and continuing successes while incorporating the new energy?

NVIDIA Continues to Demonstrate 64-Bit
Leadership
07/29/2004 09:42 AM
NVIDIA Corporation, the worldwide leader in visual processing solutions, today announced availability of a new 64-bit demonstration for NVIDIA nForce™3- and AMD Athlon™ 64 processor-based PCs and notebooks. The highly-graphical 3D demo portrays a liquid-like dancer who moves and grooves in a surreal disco world, employing specialized 64-bit instructions that respond to real-time user intervention and music MP3s.

The 3D dancer was originally created as a 32-bit technology demonstration. NVIDIA ported the software code to demonstrate the increased performance offered by the advanced 64-bit processing architecture of the AMD Athlon 64 processor. Internal tests by NVIDIA show the new version outperforms the 32-bit version by more than 27 percent in comparable computing environments. Tests were conducted using an NVIDIA nForce3-based motherboard, an AMD Athlon 64 processor, an NVIDIA GeForce™ 6800 GT graphics processing unit, and Microsoft® Windows® XP 64-bit v.1195.

“NVIDIA and AMD have a shared vision: to promote immersive, experiential, and compelling graphics that were not possible with 32-bit memory limitations,” said Marty Seyer, vice president and general manager, AMD’s Microprocessor Business Unit, Computation Products Group. “The AMD64 platform enables best-in-class performance and provides computer experiences that were never possible before. Users who want a more exciting computing experience should definitely get an AMD Athlon 64 processor-based system.”

Fujitsu sues Samsung over plasma TVs. Fujitsu files suit in U.S. and Japanese courts against Samsung, alleging that the rival display maker has violated patents for its plasma technology. [CNET News.com - Personal Technology]

I was wondering when this suit would happen.  Fujitsu was doing flat-panel plasma screens in the late 80's.  I remember thme saying to me "we have five year jump on competition."  So why haven't Fujitsu taken advantage of their leadership?

I must ask my old friend Furukawa-san.

I am sure we have all been taught to praise the ingenuity of the United States Constitution but how many of you have ever heard any politician of the two main political parties say that there are a few huge errors in the Constitution? Even academia is bent on keeping this a secret, mostly because 95% of American professors are socialists (communists) and they love their government jobs. [PRWEB Jun 29, 2004]
