Jump onto the LifeBlog 07/15/2004 12:17 AM

Designed to create a timeline that allows you to categorize your days events and pictures automatically, LifeBlog looks like a visual diary of sorts. While any practical application escapes me, it does sound like a neat feature to have on your mobile device.

Lifebl0g on Mac? 06/22/2005 02:54 AM
Charlie, who used to be in Nokia's Lifeblog team is looking for good people to make a Mac version. If you can code on Mac, go help him out. And if you can't, just spread the message in your blog; I'm sure at least one extraordinarily talented Mac hacker reads this blog (Hi ado! :-)

This is killler.

Now we know why Joi has been flying to Helsinki so much lately.  Let's hope he's more sucessful there than he was with Sony.

LifeBlog goes beta 07/08/2004 01:54 PM

For those of you living in a cave - LifeBlog is Nokia's - well just go check it out. This is major stuff folks - not because it's that good or revolutionary - but because it comes from a hardware vendor!

"OH MY GOD" - you mean software might help us sell hardware? I wonder if that Joi's doing? He's certainly been spending enough time in Helsinki.

But me - no - I NEVER get invited to Helsinki. The last time I bitched about that - I got a phone call from nobody less than the main cult-man himself - CLAY SHIRKY!

How knows - maybe thsi post will get the godhead himself to ping me.

Nokia Updates Lifebl0g

Nokia Updates Lifebl0g 12/24/2004 12:16 PM

lifeblog15.jpg imageNokia has updated their blogging software for Series 60 phones, "Lifeblog," to version 1.5. Improvements include the ability to back up you data to a CD or DVD (using your PC, of course, not your phone) and an improved interface for looking through your content and making edits.

Technically Lifeblog is a Euro-only application, although there's likely nothing stopping you from using the software, if you can find a way to purchase it. The upgrade is free for existing users.

Great Lifebl0g write up

Great Lifebl0g write up 04/08/2005 05:08 AM

Giles Turnball has a great indepth report of Nokia's Lifeblog - which I am a tester for.

It highlights Lifeblog's daddy - Christian Lindholm - who I met at ETech - hanging with Russel Beattie.

Though I woudl do it differently Lifeblog is a new kind of tool, partially inspired (I'm sure) by Joi Ito's life - as he's teh one who's fingerprints are all over this deal.

Lifeblog currently only works with TypePad and MT.

But it's cool - despite that.

Nokia LifeBlog Beta Released

Nokia LifeBlog Beta Released 07/14/2004 12:05 PM

nokia_lifeblog_.jpg imageNokia has released a free beta version of its LifeBlog software for download, new software designed for quickly adding pictures, text, and movies to your own personal blog. While they say it "works best with the Nokia 7610 phone" (sadly, not yet available in the US), there is an outside change it might work with another phone -- they list the Nokia 6630, specifically. If any of our European readers have already gotten a hold of a 7610 or 6630 and want to write up their a quick review/preview of the LifeBlog software, we certainly would be happy to read it.

That would be Jerome Lacoste, who writes “It was fun to see a guy of his age use vi to code some non mainstream language and put some CSS in HTML.”. Well, kiddo, my beard may be mostly white and my head mostly bald, but all ten fingers more or less work. Further, it occurs to me that this is a discipline in which skills are acquired as you go along, and as you go along, year upon year, you get better at it. And as for vi, well y’know, I would have used Emacs, but I didn’t want to scare the kiddies. Here’s how it is: Some people can’t not code, and sometimes the condition is long-lasting. (Actually, Jerome said kind things about my Javapolis talk. Seems like a smart guy, give him another decade or two and we’ll see.)

SPF is a very broken anti-forgery technique which you should not implement. You should neither publish SPF records, nor check SPF on incoming email.

If you use SPF, you will be causing genuine email to be rejected. There are much better alternatives which address the forgery problem without throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Flickr Fun - New TSL Mobl0g 04/10/2005 12:47 AM

I've had a Flickr account since the service first started, but I've never really used it. I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to set up a new moblog on my own site since TextAmerica no longer offers RSS feeds for free accounts, so now I’m joining all of the cool kids and hanging out on Flickr instead. It will mostly be my moblog, although I may post other pictures down the road. For family and friends, the RSS feed is here and my tags are here. In a way, it’s my own little experiment to see how well I do at adding metadata to my photos online since I’ve been horrible at doing this in the past.

Usually, moblogs are weblogs containing posted photos from mobile phones or digital cameras. Phillip M. Torrone tells us he is now sharing his moblog with a Sony Aibo that can post random shots from its internal camera to the blog. Phillip describes it this way: "the robot dog posts once every few hours automatically using its built in camera, his built in wifi and emails it to the site." This might be the first robot with its own blog; well, provided you don't count Robot Frank's online diary.

I proposed the idea of using a TextAmerica moblog as a means to document wifi hotspots in an article I wrote for MacMerc.com earlier this year. The response was underwhelming. So now I'd like to offer the service to you folks, the experts in the wardriving community. To post your pics and info, email the images as JPEG attachments, include the name of the location as the email's subject and the specifics of the hotspot in the body of the message and send it to the moblog. I hope you'll make some use of it.

A few weeks ago, I read the post you guys made about MoblogUK, a creative commons licensed alternative to TextAmerica. I'd been searching for an alternative for awhile, so I was pretty excited to find it. After switching I wanted a way to get my images from TextAmerica over to the new site at MoblogUK, so I wrote this app to make the process easy. Besides parsing a TextAmerica moblog and sending the entries off to MoblogUK it can also save your TextAmerica entries locally in an XML/XSL format...in case you ever want to do that for some reason!

Newspaper Opens Up Mobl0g For Readers

Newspaper Opens Up Mobl0g For Readers 01/27/2004 05:18 PM
If you ask people who have been involved in big news stories, they almost always say that the press got it wrong. This leads to a general feeling that the traditional press never gets the full story - which is why there seems to be a constant (and somewhat pointless) argument as to whether or not "blogs" compete with the traditional press. There's room for both - as they serve different purposes. Alan Reiter points out that the San Diego Union-Tribune has apparently signed a deal with textamerica to prov ide moblogs for readers. For those who don't keep up with this stuff, moblogs are blogs with content (often pictures) sent in from mobile phones. This is a pretty big step, though it might not seem like it at first. It's a newspaper admitting that some of its readers may have a better (photographic) take on things that are happening out there than they have themselves. It will be interesting to see how quickly other news sites follow. Of course, as with anything like this, there will be an awful lot of junk that shows up on the moblogs, and many detractors will point to all this as a reason why it's a pointless experiment. However, it's not the junk that's the point - but the few gems that come out of all that junk, and it will help to make people much more involved with the news generating process. The nice thing about blogs is that they provide so much more around the news story: whether it's additional details, opinions or context. Seeing that surrounding a newspaper story could be very interesting as it paints a much more complete picture of what happened. Of course, if newspapers really wanted to get people involved, why focus on just moblogging? Why not offer full blogging capabilities to readers?

Now *that* is a photoblog. Chronologically indexed gallery of interplanetary snapshots from this weekend's Mars landing. The first images sent back are of limited quality -- and only in black and white -- because data transmission rate from Spirit's antenna back to Earth is limited. Higher-res color images are expected to be relayed back from the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey Spacecraft later today, according to Mission Control. At left:

"This mosaic image taken by the navigation camera on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit has been further processed, resulting in a significantly improved 360 degree panoramic view of the rover on the surface of Mars."

PhotoToTypePad/ a> has been released for public beta. I've been testing it for the past couple weeks and Jonathon has incorporated pretty much every feature request and comment I made. It works perfectly for me, I typically create a new gallery, toss some photos in it, rename the titles on the images, then just export to Typepad as a new gallery.

About the only downside I've found so far is the resolution limits at Typepad, which seem to force images whatever max width and height is in your settings (typically 500-640px). Also, I have no idea how much the final version of PhotoToTypepad will cost, hopefully it'll be $5-10.
