Golden Tech

Golden Tech 07/15/2004 12:17 AM

So how exactly do you work with seniors wanting to learn technology. Boy, that is a tough question. While there is no single correct answer, I did find some good advice from a man named Gary Baker; Here’s a quick list: 1) The first thing to do is assess their current level of ability. That way you won’t start over their heads. 2) Then find out what they want to be able to do - it’s pointless and confusing to teach a lot of things at once so focus on what they want to be able to do, for example send an email to their friend in Australia. 3) Break it up into lessons and only focus on one thing per lesson, unless it’s a very minor skill in which case you could do more. Plan your lesson, and allow plenty of time for it. 4) Show them something once, then get them to do it. Then get them to do it again. And again. Then show them the next step. Repeat as above. Then get them to do both steps one after the other. Then show them the third step, and start again. It’s laborious but it’s very effective and they’re less likely to forget what they’ve learn. 5) Give them plenty of time. Elderly people in particular want to do things in their own time and at their own pace, so let them.

New York's golden age

New York's golden age 01/02/2005 06:28 PM

The NY Times recently asked a few New Yorkers which era they would nominate as New York's golden age. Like Greg, I thought Bill T. Jones' answer was the most penetrating:

Right after 9/11.

New York had a true reappraisal of itself at a tragic and introspective moment. New York had the attention of the whole world; it was a frightening moment. But the world was ready to follow, to assist.

It lasted a few months. We were vulnerable and open to the rest of the world, and we were ready for a change. There was a chance to ask questions, and it was a time when we were forced to do so.

But it didn't happen. There wasn't a true conversation about what America means to the rest of the world or about why New York was chosen. It was an opportunity. And then the politicians took it.

That last sentence is a doozy, isn't it? It saddens me to think that in times when we need to have open and honest communication to heal wounds and investigate opportunities, we instead let ourselves get caught up with the marketing of powerful men.

Were those the golden years?

Were those the golden years? 06/05/2005 11:34 PM
I just finished reading Kottke's new piece, A whole new internet?, and it reminded me of a moment in 2002, sitting in a basement at a great conference organized by Kevin Werbach in the depth of the tech recession. While around us were depression, unemployment and nay-saying about the internet, in that room was amazing creativity and energy -- people like Mike Masnick, Ben and Mena Trott, Dan Gillmor, Marc Canter, Dave Sifry and many others all excited about the ideas they had and the things they were working on, and all eager to share them. Now, except for the irrepressible Mr. Cantor, the projects have become businesses, and the proprietors much quieter. People are still working on cool stuff, but they are talking and sharing less, except for marketing mode. I know my writing has suffered, both because of constraints on what I feel comfortable writing about here, and just because of the lack of time to write. Business is booming, but it is less fun. Is Kottke right, and will we look back at 2002-2004 as the golden years of the internet, pre-Web 2.0?...

Golden Apples of The Sun 07/14/2004 11:57 AM
Singer Songwriter Devendr a Banhart recently assembled an amazing mix of music exclusively for Arthur Magazine entitled “Golden Apples of the Sun,” (Pitchfork review) which has the high task of defining the West-cost based "freakfolk" scene. Featuring brilliant new artists (such as the breathtaking Joanna Newsom, Iron and Wine, and Vetiver, among others), it was limited to 1000 copies (all of which are sold out). There should be a second edition, but in the meantime you can listen to the whole album on this player.

The golden benefits of C'ing your PHP

The golden benefits of C'ing your PHP 03/11/2003 01:22 AM
I've seen some posts in response to my experiments C'ing my PHP code. Some of them have questioned the benefits. Well my experiments are that of a beginner (hint: remember the kiddie emoticons), so you have to take what i say with a grain of salt.

My initial conversion was the most commonly called function in the ADOdb api, MoveNext(). This function is just a wrapper to a database call, so there's not much to tune and a small speedup is only to be expected.

Finding things to tune is like looking for gold. We need to understand a bit about the geology of our code before we can hit paydirt. We are looking for functions which are frequently called, contain a substantial amount of PHP code, but not too complicated that it becomes a pain to port to C, preferably involves a lot of looping, and is unlikely to ever change (it's much less fun to maintain this than maintaining a secret love affair).

Well i just hit a rich seam. There is a function called ADORecordset::GetArray(), which creates a 2D array from a recordset. Now it calls the C function adodb_getall(). I did some global optimizations that are impossible to do in a PHP script, and the speed improvement is about 75%. This function is used to emulate record counting, so it's used in every query against oracle, mssql or any other commercial database.

As i learn more, things could get even faster.

Why? It was shiny, hello. I agree with Planet Gamecube when they say Nintendo should release this gold version in the US as a special Zelda edition 'cube.

Also, there's a joke in there about cubes of gold bullion somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can find it. Game-flavored soup? Princess Peach locked in Fort Knox? I got nothin'.

Golden Rule before Cluetrain

Golden Rule before Cluetrain 07/07/2004 07:52 AM

Yesterday, an absolutely gorgeous NY summer day, I took my walk with my iPod and Doc Searls.

There were two parts to the conversatio n, the first, a narrative biography about Doc, which was very useful, I didn't know how he came to be in Silicon Valley for example. The second half was fairly predictable Doc hype, open source and Microsoft ad infinitum, as if that was all there was in the software world, with a new rant about how SCO was screwing with Doc's life, something I could relate to, because my own life is being screwed with.

A short comment stuck with me. Doc said of fellow Cluetrainer, Chris Locke and his alter-id, Rageboy: "The most out-there and purposely offensive blog. He's a genius, it's brilliant stuff. It's hostile." Then he laughs.

I've heard him say this before, and I've also heard David Weinberger say the same thing. They find Locke's cruelty amusing. I agree that Locke's site is purposely offensive, I might go a little further, but I wonder if Searls and Weinberger would like it so much if they were the targets?

Locke directs his hostility at people. I watched as he humiliated an old girlfriend. How does he get away with this? I wondered. People still seem to be his friend. I didn't say anything for fear that he'd go after me. Then he did. How did I offend him? I honestly don't know.

The Golden Rule comes before The Cluetrain Manifesto. If you aren't trying to treat people as you would like to be treated, you can't possibly do good, imho. You guys have taken a big detour, I think you've lost your way. When I first read the Cluetrain I was cheering, it was exciting. Now it's degraded and sick. Time for an intervention. Wake up guys, people matter. I still believe you're better than this. Much.

The Golden Age of Silver Age comics

The Golden Age of Silver Age comics 12/15/2003 04:26 PM
I discovered Jack Kirby around 1972 (with KAMANDI) and quickly devoured his comics from the previous decade, especially Fantastic Four. Here's a nice NYT article about 1960s comic books that sums up why they're so great.
Just as Mr. Infantino's Flash had captured the gung-ho futurism of the late 50's, illustrators like Kirby and Mr. Ditko brought an appropriately darker, grittier and sometimes spaced-out look to Marvel's pages in the mid-60's. The Fantastic Four spent a lot of time on the Lower East Side, where Kirby had grown up. Mr. Ditko's hallucinatory illustrations for the mystic Dr. Strange had a direct impact on the psychedelic art that bloomed a few years later. In "Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test," Tom Wolfe reported that the LSD guru Ken Kesey spent hours studying Dr. Strange comics with acid-inspired probity. Rock-concert posters also lifted the character's image.

In Jonathan Lethem's Fortress of Solitude, which I finished on a plane yesterday, there's an amazing aside about a band called The Prisonaires, a group of 1950s black men who'd been sent to jail on faked-up charges and who formed a best-selling pop group behind bars, leaving on special work-release programs to perform and record. It turns out that The Prisonaires aren't fictional -- what's more, you can actually buy a reissue CD of their greatest hits. Link
