Bush's Bait and Switch... and Why I Like
It
12/19/2004 03:12 PM
George Bush got re-elected on the strength of two issues: the "War on Terrorism" and "Moral Values." That's what motivated a decisive share of the electorate to come out and vote. So, isn't it a bit surprising that the two pillars of his agenda for the next term are tax reform and social security reform? If I were a Bush supporter (which I'm not), I would be scratching my head about now.

ReplayTV's Bait And Switch Pricing

ReplayTV's Bait And Switch Pricing 12/26/2003 01:45 PM
Let's say you're a company that has just recently bought< /a> a struggling PVR maker like ReplayTV. You know that there's a lot of competition out there this holiday season, coming from all different directions, such as market definer TiVo and all the various cable and satellite TV providers. So what do you do? You drop your prices to a very low price and put bright green stickers on the boxes saying that the first three years of service are free. When people call you up and ask you if this great deal is for real, you tell them "absolutely". Next, you let people snap up these boxes in short order realizing that at $150 and no service fees for 3 years, they're getting quite a deal. Then, just as they've wrapped up the wonderful gift for their loved ones, you put out a press release saying that the retailers screwed up, and you will be charging a $13/month service fee after all - despite the bright green stickers. In most places that's called bait & switch or simply lying, but the folks behind ReplayTV seem to think it's a way to get good holiday sales.

Phishers Using Cash For Bait

Phishers Using Cash For Bait 03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Someone should do a study on the way the various phishing scams have evolved over time. From the original, poorly worded spam messages trying to get people to give up their bank account or credit card info to very slick replicas that currently go out and even on to mixing and matching 419 scams with phishing scams, it appears that those involved with phishing attacks keep adjusting. That's probably because the scam seems to be runnin g dry in a few places. The latest trick is to try to appeal to a surfer's greed, rather than just fear that something is wrong with their account. A new set of phishing emails are offering up cash in exchange for giving away your info -- though, of course, no one ever sees the cash (if anything, they see less of it in their own accounts). However, given the fact that many people will hand over their passwords in exchange for a chocolate bar, a pen, or a friendly smile, is it any wonder that offering a few dollars seems to make people give away their bank accounts?

Bait-cars play theme from "Cops" during

Bait-cars play theme from "Cops" during
bust
07/09/2004 05:19 AM
Cops in Minneapolis have developed a fleet of "bait cars" -- cars left on the street with the keys in the ignition as a honeypot for snagging car thieves. The cars are equipped with hidden cameras and satellite trackers for evidence gathering and apprehension, and with specially fitted car-radios that play the theme from "Cops" during the bust itself.

I remember the Toronto cops once tried a bait-bike and were quite successful, snagging dozens of bike-thieves in a short time, but had to give it up because the bait-bike got stolen while the cops were busy arresting someone for trying to steal it. Link (via Engadget)

Prodigem Marketplace

Prodigem Marketplace 04/11/2005 10:50 AM

Stanford graduate student Gary Lerhaupt has created Prodigem Marketplace. It's basically a Bittorrent non-DRM'ed media marketplace.

Prodigem Marketplace
The Prodigem Marketplace allows Prodigem users to sell their independent media (videos, music, etc) while not concerning themselves with traditional bandwidth costs associated with repeated large data transfers. Content providers (YOU!) simply upload their work, set a price, and Prodigem does the rest. Once customers pay for access to the bit torrent peer-to-peer session for your content, Prodigem grants them access so they can begin their download (no DRM). Prodigem collects this revenue, removes 10% + transaction costs (PayPal) and then sends you a monthly check. Ever considered making a living as a Long Tailor? Check out this example for-pay torrent to see what it looks like.

[...]

Mechanics Of Becoming An "Ecommonist"

The process of becoming a media retailer couldn't be any easier. To accomodate this new method of transfer, we have added a Copyright Plus Prodigem license to the available licensing options. This simple license allows you to retain copyright over your work while making a specific grant of rights to Prodigem and its users. In effect you are saying that it is fine to share your work so long as it's only through the torrent you created, and since access to the torrent is only granted when payment is received, you get exactly what you are looking for.

You are also free to instead license your work under the Creative Commons. Though with a CC license you are technically granting everyone redistribution rights regardless of venue. This is fine by us if it's okay with you, but does mean that people are free to share without payment. Realizing this conundrum, we are busy mulling over something akin to a "Delayed" Creative Commons license, where Prodigem users will be able to stipulate their work as covered under Copyright Plus Prodigem license, and then on some fixed date of their choosing (eg. 1 year, 5 years) it automatically switches over to a CC license of their choosing. It's like peanut butter and chocolate.

via Howard @ Smartmobs

I'm very interested in the economics of the end of the long tail. My theory is that people will pay, even if they are not forced. I think price, the experience and the lack of DRM should have an impact. There is some data from the unencumbered shareware software world, but it will be interesting to see how this fares for media content. I would also be interested to see how artists using Creative Commons fare against artists using the more restricted Copyright Plus Prodigem license. If this is successful, this will be yet another good example of non-infringing use of P2P to highlight the idiocy Hollywood's position on the Grokster case. (Note that NASA has also started using Bittorrent.)

Bittorrent marketplace

Bittorrent marketplace 04/10/2005 12:37 PM
Prodigem, a legal torrent site, has announced a marketplace that will let you upload a file and sell bittorrent access to it. So, if you had, say, a video of your band performing its hit "Download Me, Baby, and Then Why Doncha Set Me Free?" that you wanted to sell, you'd upload it to Prodigem Marketplace and slap a price on it. Prodigem takes 10% plus the PayPal fee and passes the rest on to you. It's DRM-free once you've downloaded it: It's just a file that you can redistribute as you see fit. And they're contemplating an interesting licensing...
