It's still surprising that Amazon.com seems so much farther ahead of the game than just about any other online retailer in terms of overall features and user experience. They continue to do more to give potential buyers more information about the products they offer. The ability to listen to snippets of songs from CDs that are being sold is well known. More recently, they introduced the ability to search through entire books and view the pages online. Now, they're experimenting with a similar offering for DVDs. They're going to let people watch a full scene from a soon-to-be-released DVD. This is similar to promotions that have been done a few times to let people watch the first five to ten minutes of a movie online to try to get them hooked. As more people get broadband connections, it wouldn't be surprising if DVD sellers (Netflix, anyone?) started to offer such functionality as well.

Last year, Netflix surprised a lot of people by announcing that they believed Amazo n was about to enter the DVD rental market. It's not often that one company's entrance into a market is announced by a potential competitor. While Amazon eventually did launch a DVD rental service, it was only in the UK. Perhaps Amazon's brief experience in that market has convinced Jeff Bezos that the company would be better off not going it alone in the US. Amazon execs have reportedly been chatting with both Netflix and Blockbuster about a partnership to offer DVD rentals in the US. Depending on the terms offered (a big if, of course), Netflix would probably be smart to jump on this opportunity. It keeps Amazon from competing directly, and gives them access not only to Amazon's marketing reach, but also could allow them to better tie into Amazon's customer database and recommendation information -- which could strengthen Netflix's own recommendation offering.

Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are nothing new. Virgin, both in the UK and the US, has been quite successful creating their own mobile phone carrier, despite not having a network of their own, but simply handling the branding and management, while leaving all the technology issues to a network operator partner. So far, most MVNOs seem to be targeting the youth market (often with "pre-paid plans"), and considering just how lucrative that market seems these days, it's no surprise that plenty of others want into the market. However, operating the whole MVNO is probably a lot of work, so now we're getting to the point where you have virtual MVNOs (VMVNOs) who will do all the work for a company, and simply slap their brand on the final product. That seems to be what's happening with convenience store 7-Eleven, who has announced plans to sell pre-paid mobile phones and service under the "Speak Out" brand - though, all the work appears to be done by Ztar Mobile. Other retailers are quickly expected to follow. Wal-Mart is at the top of the list, with Costco and Home Depot also apparently considering their own mobile phone offerings. The idea is to target younger users, or those with bad credit histories, who can simply pick up a phone at the store, and use it until their minutes run out, at which point they can top it up again - back at the store, of course.
