Do You Code-Switch? Yet Another Reason
to Go Some Rights Reserved
07/14/2004 11:51 PM

People who study race, gender, and anthropology sometimes talk about "code-switching" : the way a person who straddles different cultures (poor and rich, minority and majority, north and south) learns to toggle between the lingo and mannerisms of each to survive, or in some cases, thrive.

One of the several "ah ha!" moments of Siva Vaidhyanathan's amazing keynote at the American Association of Law Libraries conference was Siva's celebration of the fact that us "information warriors" (his term, borrowed from the Pentagon) -- librarians, teachers, lawyers, programmers, musicians, filmmakers, preachers, propagandists, bloggers -- are learning to code-switch across our respective disciplines as never before. And that it's precisely this vocational Spanglish that will help us build, one day, a coherent information policy.

That insight alone was enough to make Siva's talk more than worthwhile. But better still was Siva's implication that each audience member had to ask ourselves how we should code-switch in our everyday info lives. Which instantly made me think of the tricorne hat all Creative Commoners don when they publish their work with our copyright licenses: lawyer-, human-, and machine-readable . . . code.

code-switch

I wish I could take credit for Creative Commons' built-in code-switching. But like most things it was Lessig's idea. Which makes me wonder: Just how many meanings will the title of his first book turn out to have?

My humble little epiphany is probably obvious to most of you. Which is just that much cooler, isn't it? That's hope right there.

(Here's some related reading, from the days when, I now realize, I first began to code-switch. However awkwardly.)

One Less Reason Not To Switch

One Less Reason Not To Switch 05/11/2004 01:45 PM

Novell has announced in a p ress release that they will release the Exchange Connector for Ximian Evolution, previously a $75/seat plugin, as open source.

Novell today announced its Connector for Microsoft* Exchange Server will be integrated into EvolutionTM 2.0 and made available as open source, beginning today with the current Connector 1.4. Evolution is Novell's award-winning e-mail and workgroup client for Linux* systems and is the most widely used collaboration suite on Linux. Evolution Connector allows Microsoft Exchange Server 2000/2003 users to easily manage their e-mail, calendars, group schedules, address books, public folders and tasks from Linux desktops.

I was thrilled to hear this. Evolution (particularly the current betas) is the equal of MS Outlook in features, but without many of the problems. The only downside was that you had to pony up the cash to natively connect with an Exchange server. My guess is that Novell feels that having this out there will speed the adoption of Linux, and that will provide them more revenue than they had been making by selling the plugin. A positive side effect of Ximian being purchased by Novell.

It appears that Novell has recognized their increasing irrelevance in their old niche, LAN products, and is jumping in to open source with both feet. Could this approach put them back into dominant position?

I watch my site statistics very closely and I realize that a lot of you are not paying attention. 72% of you still use Internet Explorer to visit the site and that makes me frown. I suppose old habits die hard.

I can tell you this for every person I have invited to switch to Firefox personally 9 out 10 have thanked me later. Try it for a week cold turkey. Check out the plug-ins they have available. If tabbed browsing is not enough to convince you I have no idea what will. [ZDNet]

Why I hate C, reason #4,348 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
Varargs. Or, these days, stdargs. It's how C lets you define functions that take a variable number of arguments. Why do I hate it? Because, even though you're forced to view the argument list opaquely, there's no argument count! That is, the standard says the variable length argument list lives in a magic va_arg thingie, you must use the Magic Functions to get the individual arguments out, and you must have the magic ... signature to note varargs in the function declaration, but... the standard can't be bothered to mandate that an argument count is passed. This seems utterly mad....
