Following pointers from Ned Batchelder's recent excursion into
code generation led me to another nice example of the power of
dynamic languages. In order to streamline his use of C++, Ned wrote a
little tool called
cog which
enables him to embed, in C++ programs, Python fragments that generate
verbose and/or repetitive C++ constructs. He adds:
For more about code generation in general, try:
-
Dave Thomas interviewed about code generation.
Dave Thomas is one of the Pragmatic Programmers, and I find I agree with him
almost universally. He forbids putting the output of code generators
under source control, I encourage it. We agree that the output should
never be edited.
- The Code Generation page on the c2 wiki. As will
happen with a wiki, this fractures off in many directions, with many
different viewpoints, both for and against code generation.

Password Recycling
Password Recycling
07/20/2004 07:39 AM
Why registration-sites suck: Boing Boing links to a story on Wired
about registration at news sites. The article is okay, but Boing
Boing's comments ring very, very true:
The point that everyone seems to miss is that no one can possibly
keep track of a thousand passwords for a thousand websites, which
means that these sites undoubtably contain recycled passwords
[...]
The more you recycle a password, the higher the likelihood that you
will use it in a sensitive context — a bank site, a message
board, an IM client, an auction site — where someone might
impersonate you or even commit identity theft crimes against you.
Okay, raise your hands, how many of you have a "standard" password
that you use all over the place? Everyone does it. Show me someone
that uses a different password for every registration or account and
I'll show you a liar.
I know a friend that has a group of passwords that he uses based on
context — one password for throwaway Web site registration, one
for email accounts, one for IM, one for sensitive stuff like banking,
etc.
What if someone at one of these services decides to take your
password and see where else it might work? Yes, I know the passwords
should be hashed when stored in their database, but there's no
guarantee that they're going to do that.
How may of you have a password stored in some service or Web site
that you've long-since forgotten about that would also work in, say,
your bank's Web site?

Recycling Printer Cartridges
Recycling Printer Cartridges
03/19/2003 10:45 PMThanks to a company called Enviro
Solutions, SLS
is now recycling all used inkjet and laser printer cartridges,
including any that staff want to bring in from home.
"We provide you with free, postage paid, collection and shipping
materials along with complete instructions. You simply choose the
method, or combination of methods, that works best for you, and get
paid for your efforts. Millions of new cartridges are sold each year,
86% end up in our landfills as trash. Start recycling today for a
better tomorrow!
We will recycle all ink jet and laser cartridges sent to us and pay
you for those that qualify for cash back ( please see the programs
pages for a list of qualifying cartridges). These are no risk, no cost
programs with no 'minimum' commitment required from you. We provide
free collection materials. The programs are simple, easy, problem
free, and self sustaining with little or no supervision. We ship
anywhere in the United States and Canada."
Very cool, since we haven't become a paperless office yet.
;-) You may want to consider doing this at your library,
too.

Recycling Perfected -- but Formalized?
Recycling Perfected -- but Formalized?
03/08/2004 11:26 PMQuestions of the day: Hip-hop artists and DJs have long made a
practice of inviting remixes by releasing acapella or instrumental
tracks. What stops them from formalizing that invitation with, say, a
CC license? Is it that the music-biz lawyers want to reserve the right
to hold remixers hostage, in the event they start to become too
successful, or stray too far aesthetically? If that's not the
explanation, what is? There's something about the practice that's
reminiscent of the Speakeasy or back-room gambling joint: when a
vibrant sampling underground is uncovered, copyright holders are
shocked, shocked to learn the law has been broken.
Related news: The New York Times today
inventoried the growing catalog of Jay-Z mash-ups, from the oh-so-scandalous
a> Grey Album *(Jay-Z + Beatles) to Double Black Album (Jay-Z +
Metallica), plus about ten more. I'm glad the whole controversy has
everyone talking about copyright and art, but it's a shame that the
Grey Album has gotten all the attention. Some of these other
mashes are better-executed as records, in my view, if less grand in
high concept. I think Illmind's Black and
Tan Album works pretty well, for example, even though its
samples are less familiar than the Grey Album's.
All this makes it more striking to hear people say that remixing is
not music, that the manipulation of sound recordings is less worthy an
art form than the manipulation of abstract notes and rhythms. Of
course rock-and-roll once faced the same criticism -- it wasn't
real music. And then came the Beatles, who by no means
invented rock but certainly perfected it, so that even the old foagies
eventually came to take its merit for granted. Will it require a
masterpiece of mash for remix culture finally to win legitimacy? Who
will be the Beatles of bricolage?
