If you needed any more proof, check out these pictures of this burnt and charred 12-inch Powerbook, caught in an apartment fire, which despite the damage and encrustations is reported to still work. What can we learn from this? In a kickboxing match between Jesus and Jobs, Steve would win. I know it's shocking, but if there's one thing I've learned from Internet, it's that digital pictures cannot lie. They don't even have tongues! (Thanks, Marcus!)

P-P-P-Powerbook

P-P-P-Powerbook 05/13/2004 10:46 PM
An American Ebay seller realises a European bidder is trying to scam him out of a Powerbook (fake escrow site, hijacked ebay account), so he sends him something far better, a P-P-P-Powerbook! Now, for you non-techies here, a factory model p-p-p-powerbook weights half what it's competitors weigh, comes with an A4 screen, the latest in internet adventure software, zero boot time, a fullsize keyboard (often with Key RedundancyTM) and a state-of-the-art laser bluetooth mouse. This is technology. The seller posts to a forum and amongst the chatter people follow the package via the the Fedex tracking page and some even visit the delivery address (a barbershop/internet cafe) and take photos, video, and a seat for their hair cut. The duty tax on this particular p-p-p-powerbook is around £350 (paid for by the scammer) before he sees the package, and a few days later it's released by Customs as they watch in anticipation. A forum member arrives at the internet cafe, takes a seat and soon the package arrives. The scammer opens the box and there are angry raised voices heard. The barber doesn't understand what's wrong and asks... "Is it broken?"

I've ordered my PowerBook

I've ordered my PowerBook 12/20/2003 07:22 PM

Thanks to everyone who provided advice on buying a Mac - it provide incredibly helpful in making my selection. I placed my order this afternoon for a 15" 1 GHz PowerBook with a SuperDrive, backlit keyboard and 60 GB of Hard Disk space. I went with the minimum possible memory (256 MB) and plan to buy an extra 512 MB from Crucial (for less than half the price Apple charge) in a few weeks time.

I saved a serious chunk of money thanks to the Student Developer program (tip off from Leonard Lin), which for a $99 membership fee and proof of student status gives you up to 20% off your first hardware purchase from the Apple store. In total, I saved nearly a thousand pounds ($1500+) on the cost of the same machine in the UK. Truth be told, it was the amount I would save by buying here that inspired me to look at PowerBooks rather than iBooks in the first place.

Delivery in 2-3 business days. I can hardly wait.

Powerbook G5 Next Tuesday?

Powerbook G5 Next Tuesday? 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

There is every reason in the world that this could be fake, but it won't hurt to go ahead and put those Powerbooks on eBay. Dated June 7th, this press release talks about 'Powerbook G5' models, with faster processors (duh) and better screens, still inside an aluminum case. We'll reproduce the text after the jump, but you can look at the 'Google Cache' on this guy's website for signs it's a spoof. (Thanks, Art!)

Update: So yeah, not likely. Lots of you have pointed out good reasons why this isn't legit, but I've copied the most comprehensive from reader 'John' below the press release after the jump.

Apple Announces PowerBook G5 for August Availibility
The Highly Anticipitated G5 Portables are Here, Featuring Low-power G5 Processors and HD Screens Across the Line

CUPERTINO, California—June 7, 2005—Apple® today announced the upcoming availibility of it's highly anticipitated PowerBook G5 line of personal computers, featuring low-power G5 cores running up to 2.3 GHz, with 12, 15, and 17 inch high definition widescreen displays, all enclosed in a thin aluminum shell. The super-powerful notebook computer outperforms the leading PC notebooks by up to 35 percent.*

The PowerBook G5's blazingly fast PowerPC G5 processor makes it the ideal computer for professional work on the go. The new high definition widescreen displays give you all the working space you need to watch and edit high definition video without hooking up an external display. All models will ship with Apple's new Mac OS 10.4 Tiger preinstalled. Best of all, this power is available at prices starting at just $1,699.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning desktop and notebook computers, OS X operating system, and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital music revolution with its iPod portable music players and iTunes online music store.

The 'Google Cache' [Mac]

I don't buy that "cache" announcing the G5 PowerBook for a second. The most convincing error for me is that the first sentence incorrectly uses "it's", but you might be more convinced by the following: - Google cache pages use valid URLs, not "http://64.233.167.104.search.q[...]" - The typography and CSS IDs are completely different from current Apple PR. - The descriptive paragraph lacks an "About Apple" heading.

Compared to the last PowerBook press release, which is here:
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/jan/31powerbook.html

...we learn:
- The alleged release's URL style is different.
- The alleged release's press contacts are different.
- The trademark line on the alleged release:
"Apple, the Apple logo, Mac, Mac OS, Macintosh, iTunes and iPod are trademarks of Apple...."
versus the legit PowerBook release:
"Apple, the Apple logo, Macintosh, Mac, Mac OS, PowerBook, SuperDrive, AirPort, iLife, iTunes, iPod, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand, Safari, Sherlock, QuickTime, iCal, Apple Store and FireWire are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Apple..."

Apple neglecting to note that the word "PowerBook" is trademarked in a PowerBook press release? Not bloody likely!

iPod rumors and rumors of iPod rumors

iPod rumors and rumors of iPod rumors 07/17/2004 10:05 AM
ThinkSecret's prediction of new sleeker standard iPods in August has been been adjusted this morning with the beans spilling of news of new white iPods to be announced Monday. This new prediction downshifts the previous rumor from being a standard iPod rumor to merely being an iPod mini rumor.

Rumors: Get 'em while they're hot

Rumors: Get 'em while they're hot 03/14/2005 04:23 PM
We all remember our first Mac rumor. Like our first tooth, kiss, paycheck or car, the first time we navigated to MacRumors or ThinkSecret or AppleInsider, and stumbled upon a tidbit that allowed us a glimpse into Apples fortress of development. It used to be that rumors were accurate about 50 percent of the time. And that was half of the fun trying to decipher which parts of which rumor were correct, inaccurate or just completely fabricated. Raise your hand if you can remember iWalk. In recent years, however, a few rumor sites especially ThinkSecret have gotten a little too precise. For the most part, Apples announcements have become a matter of formality, as the community at-large (and often mainstream media outlets, too) have already received, absorbed and dissected the news, leaving little else save the decision to purchase. You have to admit, it's kind of taken the fun out of things. I mean, we were actually surprised when the iPod came out. No, really, we were. So, when Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge James P. Kleinberg ruled Friday that "an interested public is not the same as the public interest," part of me was eager for a return to the Apple of yore, when a Macworld keynote was a reason to stay up all night in anticipation. (The other part of me was deeply afraid that journalistic integrity and responsibility would continue to be eroded until the only source of reporting would lie somewhere between supermarket tabloids and FOX NEWS, filled with half-truths and barely relatable sound bytes, all slapped under a 140-point misleading headline. But thats not the point of this particular column.) For the most part, I agree with Kleinberg's statement, even if the ruling troubles me as a journalist. Apples trade secrets are, indeed, stolen property, but it remains to be seen just how hard the company can lean on the bloggers in question. Before the ruling, for example, ThinkSecret published two more rumors on its site: one about iMacs and eMacs, and one about Tiger. So, will we return to a dry, rumorless existence? Will the fertile, accurate soil that grows today's rumors dry up once Apple begins to enforce its court-appointed power? Or are we simply in store for a battle of rhetoric? Yesterdays reports on ThinkSecret cited "well placed sources" rather than the traditional "reliable source" we've all come to trust so readily. We've all seen countless rumor sites come and go, and come and go again, but never have we faced such a bitter fight for dominance. So grab 'em while you can, because reliable rumors may soon be as hard to find as an iPod with a FireWire cable. Or, I suppose, an iWalk.

Tungsten T6 Rumors 03/17/2005 03:51 AM

tungsten2005_1_.jpgThe freshest rumors about PalmOne's forthcoming Tungsten read a little lot like a fairy tale, so we won't get our hopes up just yet. Features for the T6 (or Tungsten 2005, as the case may be) include Bluetooth, Wavelan, 1GB of Flash memory, a 3 MP digital camera, an ethernet port, iTunes compatibility, an initial price of about $400, Graffiti 2 Plus with voice commands and the ability to clean your teeth while you sleep and print money.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure I have enough grains of salt to accompany this list, especially considering the hat tip from A_Man_In_Black in #gizmodo:

The Tungstens consciously don't include cameras, because of workplace restrictions. A new high-end Palm with a camera would be a Zire, not a Tungsten.

I can always tell when the news machine is slowing down. It's kind of like there's sugar at the bottom of the Mac Web's gas tank, really. When their news tank gets low they start to pick up the same old crap at the bottom and try to use it to fuel the fires. What I underestimated was the level at which they pick that crap up. It seems that Mac reporters are very, very easily bored.

What I mean is that there's a good deal of news to actually cover, what with Tiger coming out to stellar reviews in spite of it being alpha-quality crap that has more bugs than the Temple of Doom. That, alone, should be decent fodder. If not that, then the sudden appearance of music videos in iTunes, or the supposed Babblecasting capabilities that 4.9 is said to bring in the future. They could bring up a whole lot of topics and keep them in the forefront with new ideas and new spin. When that runs out they could easily be useful and start talking about tips and how to get the most of the computer (which is the only reason I still have a Mac World subscription, really). No, they babble about the same crappy rumors to keep the hit counter spinning for the Ad Lords.

I mean, some of us just don't post anything for months when there's no news and nothing else comes to mind. It's not hard, really; you just walk away and go do something with your life for a while. It seems that some others just can't seem to handle that concept.

So, what crap lies at the bottom of that tank? The usual suspects, really. They are the insane ideas that spread like wildfire each time they're brought up and cause the predictable and easily-incited hoards of Mac fundamentalists to hit the message boards and their own pathetic little blogs and write and write and write about how it will (never) come to pass and how everyone else is just not seeing the "big picture" and how this idea could easy (save|kill) Apple, and computing in general! and so on and so forth.

Poppycock.

If you ever see an article on these topics, you're being played for a fool and should ignore it:

  • Mac OS X for PCs (and the variant "Apple moves Macs to Intel")
  • PowerBook G5
  • Video iPod
  • Movie store
  • Apple-branded PDA

Let's just get it out into the open here and now, okay? Apple's not doing any of them; not now, and not years ago when it was first "reported" that they were. Quit daydreaming and get back on track. Whatever Apple's next innovation is, you won't see it coming until it slaps you across the face like the Apple bitch you are and gives you that tell-tale "you had it all wrong, again" look.

If it was easy to guess where Apple would steer the industry next then Sony would have long ago stolen the show from them. Sony has good designers, both aesthetic and electronic, and could easily best Apple out of the "niche computer artisan" market if they had any sense of direction at all. Well, and got rid of their NIH syndrome (ATRAC3-only in a digital Walkman? Dear God, man, what were you thinking?).

So, look, what this boils down to is that the next damn time I open MacSurfer and see a load of bullshit like any of this, I'm just going to stop reading web sites for a week. It's not worth sorting through this much stupidity and naïveté just to find out that it was a slow news day.

If you're a writer for the Mac Web, I urge you to listen to one piece of feedback: If there's nothing to report, stop writing and wait until there is.

Thank you, and good night.

Tungsten T6 Rumors Revisited, Not T6

Tungsten T6 Rumors Revisited, Not T6 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

palm_one_logo.jpgSo it appears that the rumors surrounding the next Tungsten have just gotten even more packed with whimsy. Palm Addict has received word that the new device will have 4GB of internal memory, weigh in a bit heavier than the T5 and will include built-in Wi-Fi. It will not, however, be called the T6, or even be part of the Tungsten line, for the rumor whispers on that it will be released at the end of April as a new sub-brand from palmOne. Take your rumors with an extra dose of salt today, please. (Thanks, Sammy!))

Should Reporters Investigate Online
Rumors?

Should Reporters Investigate Online
Rumors?
05/25/2004 02:49 PM
Just last week we had a story about how the job of the reporter was changing with the rise of the internet - where everyone can be a "citizen reporter." The story pointed out that traditional news sources were sticking to their old way of doing things and completely ignoring online rumors. While this makes sense from a traditional journalistic viewpoint, news consumers were clearly flocking to the rumor sites. In response, the article pointed out that reporters needed to become "the ratifiers of the news" rather than "gatekeepers of the news." It appears that others are coming to the same conclusion. The Village Voice now has a column saying that reporters need to investigate online rumors. People know they're out there, and without reporters digging into them and figuring out if they're true or not, rumors start to take on a life of their own. As the writer says: "Yes, covering rumors would empower lies. But you can't quash juicy stuff by ignoring it. And after all, the "real" media are quite capable of twisting the facts."
