Forbes.com - How is it that for eight months a team of up to a dozen IBM consultants has been toiling in the data centers and computer rooms of the Munich city government--free of charge? Having goaded Munich into embracing open-source software, IBM is helping it plan a migration of 14,000 computers off Microsoft Windows and onto the operating system known as Linux. Never mind that IBM doesn't sell Linux, which is distributed free. And never mind that Munich officials say they're not committed to buying IBM hardware or consulting services, despite all IBM's free help.

This is the best internet video mashup evar: the Star Wars Kid (a net-icon famous for having captured his Darth Maul light-staff fights on video, thus becoming the subject of Internet mockery, which led to a really bogus lawsuit) matted extremely well into the Kill Bill trailer. During this weekend's launch of the SENT phonecam photography show (press coverage here), pics submitted by the public were displayed on iMac screens, refreshing automatically every few minutes (link), while iTunes blasted some groovy mashups. Many at the show asked about the tunes, so here is one highlight from the playlist. I'll post more over the next few days -- don't want to spoil you with a jam overdose.

The tracks people seemed to dig most were all from an amazing mashup album by a group of DJs called Hanzo Steel -- remixes inspired by the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill Volume 2. My favorite track: "Bang Bang, My Baby Shot Me Down" (Link to free MP3 track). The track includes samples from: "Bang Bang My Baby Shot Me Down" by Nancy Sinatra, "Big Beat" by Billy Squier/"Fix Up Look Sharp" by Dizzee Rascal, "Apache" by the Incredible Bongo Band (as used by Nas), "Take Me To The Mardis Gras" by Bob James/"Peter Piper" by Run DMC and audio samples from many of the original Kung Fu films which are referenced in Tarantino's movies. I can't stop playing this track. It scratches the funk spot in my brain.

Here are two more freebies from the same disc: "Twisted Nerve (Biter's Revenge)" (Link to free MP3). Includes "Twisted Nerve" by Bernard Herrmann and "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson. And "Ironsides" includes "Ironsides" by Quincy Jones plus Divine Styler. (Link to free MP3).

Link to Hanzo Steel home (check the fine cover art! Buy the CD!). Check out SENT in person through Saturday July 17 (12-5pm daily) at the Downtown Standard Hotel in LA. Oh, and the image shown here is one of the 1500 +/- phonecam snapshots submitted by the public. You can never have enough phonecam pics of hot electroclash babes licking themselves in the mirror, I always say. (Thanks for the free tracks, Hanzo Steel!)

NASA Fired Will Carpenter for writing a short story. "Some kind of harrassment," they said, and since Texas is an at-will employment state, there's not much he can do about it. Is this story a valid means of self-expression or a harrassing glimpse into jilted anger? I've stumbled across more and more news stories about people being fired for writing, and students expelled for writing "dark poetry" in the classroom. How much do you have to keep secret from your classmates and co-workers?

How to kill a linkfarm

How to kill a linkfarm 06/28/2004 01:19 PM

As much fun as it is to run PVRblog, recently it's been a chore. Last week, someone sent me an email congratulating me on acheiving a pagerank of 9/10. I had no idea and I guess that's nice and all (and surprising, given that the site is less than a year old), but it's turned into a giant honeypot for spammers. I would venture to guess there aren't any other 9/10 pagerank sites that allow you to submit information that results in a link to your site.

After waking up and deleting half a dozen posts every morning for the past several weeks (and banning their IPs), today I noticed even legit comment posters were tweaking their posting names to reflect a better google ranking. Instead of putting "steve" down as their name, their name would read something more like "info on pvr hardware" which would link to their site. When a feature gets abused by even those that should know better, it's time to do something about it.

I've considered turning off comments, and that's often what people do, but in this case I'm removing the URL request on comment forms and I'm no longer linking to anything from a commentor's name on the site, including all back archives. I had HTML turned on for comments, but in the last hour that I've had name/urls turned off, I've already received a few new spam comments, using HTML in the comment fields. So that'll be coming off soon too.

I noticed at a few weblogs, new comments don't have email or URL entry forms, and comments get posted with just names. I always wondered why, but now I know.
