Tech Tool Pro 4-- It's Finally Here

Tech Tool Pro 4-- It's Finally Here 12/02/2003 10:11 PM
It's finally here. Maybe it was because of the short rant in my blog, or maybe it was because they just realized that November ended two days ago. The point is, Micromat has finally released TechTool Pro 4. There are too many new features to describe here, just head over to the TTP4 site to see them. And stick around for a review, coming soon.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Finally RTM

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Finally RTM 08/06/2004 01:31 PM
In a letter just sent to testers, "Final testing is complete and at 10:08am this morning we signed off on build 2180 as Windows XP Service Pack 2, releasing it to manufacturing. The final build will be available to beta sites immediately at http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com/download/dl3.asp. You will find both English and German versions there, Japanese will follow early next week. Next week the service pack will be available on the Microsoft Download Center for general download. In the interim we're making the update available to you via the beta web site. If you are running RC2, or any other build released to beta sites, we invite you to turn on Automatic Updates, and starting on August 10th your system will automatically download the express version of Windows XP SP2. For typical home users this is about a 75 MB download; for those on RC2 it should be less than 30 MB. "

National Institutes of Health proposes
full, open, public access to biomedical
research
09/09/2004 12:44 PM

The National Institutes of Health is recommending that researchers who receive NIH funding make their work available to the world for no cost six months after completion:

Under the proposed policy, journal peer-review committees would vet papers that report results from NIH-sponsored research. Once the journal has edited and published the articles, editors would upload them to a searchable Web site and NIH would make them publicly available within 6 months.
The NIH initially recommended immediate publication, but added the six month embargo as a compromise with publishers, who argued that immediate availability would undermine their business model.

One Tech Site Notes a Library Service

Original SimCity Online

"Classic Live - SimCity.com: I've recently become (re-)addicted to SimCity 3000 (which I checked out from my local library on a 30-day loan, believe it or not). You can play the orignal SimCity online here. Via Metafilter." [Gadgetopia]

This is the first mention of a library I can recall on any of the tech-oriented blogs, and it's not even for a remotely-accessible service like online reference, database access from home, or requesting books via a PDA or cell phone. That's just sad.

Global Restructuring of University
andIndustry Research Centers,
Institutes, and Consortia - Managed
Science and Mandatory Evaluation
Conflict With Scientific Freedom
07/26/2004 03:53 AM
A wave of managed scientific research in regional, national, and global scale is restructuring the organization and funding of scholarly and medical research centers at universities, institutes, laboratories, and consortia. It includes mandated evaluation of research centers, performance measures of their degrees of successes and outcomes in the communities served, measures of the degrees of benefits bestowed upon all the stakeholders - including the host universities and funding sources. "THE PAYOFF - Evaluating Research Centers, Institutes, Laboratories, and Consortia For Success" by William R. Tash of Temple University and Stephen Miles Sacks of SciPolicy Publications (http://scipolicy.net) highlights the issues and includes a comprehensive guide for research directors, administrators, and funding officials to evaluate their research centers for success. English-proficiency test for
English-speaking immigrants
08/22/2004 07:30 AM
Cory Doctorow: Immigrants to the UK from English-speaking countries such as Canada and Australia must pass an English proficiency test in order to gain UK citizenship. The test is apparently very stringent:
According to one report two Australians, including a knight who has lived in Britain for 44 years and a writer with a degree in English, have been rejected under the new rules.
