when faraway places f*ck up NYC

when faraway places f*ck up NYC 08/09/2004 08:08 PM
Boom! Forget terror attacks, the real reason for an orange alert in NYC has to do with ... rocks. I'll bet you've never heard of Cumbr e Vieja. In fact, if the first hit on a google s earch for something is a PDF, you know it's obscure. (It's a volcano in the Canaries). If it erupts, it'll spell the end for Washington, New York and Boston (and parts of Europe will get a bit wet.) Hoo!

Now, short of hoping it will go away, there's nothing you can do, because it will take 35 million years to dismantle the dangerous bits of rock. Instead, the boffins are talking about evacuating the east coast. Yet more obscure places you wish you could forget menacing the future of the US, hey?

Places Online

Places Online 01/25/2004 04:14 PM
Places Online
http://www.placesonline.org

The Association of American Geographers has gathered an array of websites that depict environments, people and life around the world. There is a high standard for inclusion in the site: the sites must be image and content heavy, and must be "primary" sites, as opposed to sites that only direct users to a list of links. Places Online is searchable, and also can be navigated by using an interactive map; the first level is by region/continent and the second level is broken down into countries and cities. Most sites are native to the region that is being explored, thereby giving a local flavor and perspective on the locales, events and experiences displayed.

The Metasearch Initiative: Looking for Data in All the Right Places
http://snipurl.com/7ig2

Whether you call it metasearch, federated search or broadcast search, the idea of exploring multiple resources using a single interface has long been the pipe dream of libraries. Unfortunately, most of the disparate data resources patrons want to search serve their data in many different ways, or not at all. While Google and the like search anything, the challenge for the library profession is to create ways to search well in all the right places. At the 2003 ALA Midwinter Meeting, three vendors -- EBSCO, Gale and ProQuest -- met to discuss the problem. Led by the National Information Standards Organization, workshop meetings were held and the Metasearch Initiative was formed. With a mix of librarians, publishers and library-software providers, the Metasearch Initiative has drawn the participation of more than 60 individuals from five countries. Even large publishers who have already developed proprietary XML gateways are involved. The Metasearch Initiative intends to identify, develop, and frame the standards and other common understandings needed to enable an efficient and robust information environment. The Metasearch Initiative's goals are to enable service providers to offer more effective and responsive services, help content providers deliver enhanced content while protecting their intellectual property, and enable libraries to deliver services that distinguish their offerings from Google and other free Web search services.

Paul Krugman: The best places to get sick A dozen years ago, everyone was talking about an American health care crisis. But then the issue faded from view: A few years of good data led many people to conclude that HMOs and other innovations had ended the historic trend of rising medical costs. But the pause in the growth of health care costs in the 1990s proved temporary. Medical costs are once again rising rapidly and the U.S. health care system is once again in crisis. So now is a good time to ask why other advanced countries manage to spend so much less than we Americans do, while getting better results.

Google directions to fictitious places

Google directions to fictitious places 07/29/2004 08:32 AM
I looked up "Valhalla" in Google to see if I'd spelled it correctly, and above the entries, Google offered to show me a map of Valhalla...Valhalla, NY, that is. Still, it took me aback. Are there other fictitious places for which Google provides above-the-results maps?...

JiWire Separates Places from Providers

JiWire Separates Places from Providers 07/07/2004 12:55 PM
JiWire collapses providers into locations, offering a more distinct look at the world: JiWire has just finished a massive update to their site which features some redesign, but most significantly changes the way in which they count hotspots. Previously, each provider at each location was counted once. Now, they count providers at locations separately from unique locations. Their current count is 46,799 hotspots (providers for each location) and 35,695 unique locations, which are physical addresses with one or more provider offering service. This method extends the principles of counting uniquely to better understand the scope of networks that I've written about recently. JiWire continues to make it simple to find free hotspots. Click Hotspots at the top of any page or Advanced Search near any hotspot search form and you can check the Free button under Access Fee to restrict results to free locations. You can also read the first of an excellent service of features written by my friends Richard and Angela as they travel with their four kids of all ages from Maine to Michigan down to Texas and back to the lobster state by RV. They're running an Internet business as they spend a month traveling, and need relatively constant access to stay on top of their operations....

Microsoft To Bridge Office, Back Office
Apps

Microsoft To Bridge Office, Back Office
Apps
01/26/2004 01:10 AM
Microsoft continues to build bridges between Office desktop apps and reservoirs of back-office data. The "Information Worker Bridge" project now under way seeks to make it easier for integrators or in-house developers to make Excel or Word de-facto front ends for back-end accounting, ERP or other applications, sources said. In theory, this would take back-office integration beyond ODBC drivers and InfoPath, the Office application that lets people build dynamic forms on their desktops that tap into back-office XML data.
