The Quark claims to the world's "highest
performance classic spinning top in the world." That means it'll spin
for a long, long time—up to 15 minutes a twirl, they say.
Manufacturer Quirkle will even include a laser pointer with each
purchase to aid in "precision dynamic balancing," as well as a glass
spinning surface (aka "a mirror") and attractive wood leveling shims
(aka "wedges"). Prices range from just $50 for a brass version up to
$2,500 for a 14k gold model. There is also an extra geeky tungsten
model for just $150. No word yet if there will be a gold-pressed
latinum version of the Quark.

04/04/2005 02:25 AMAdobe announced today the latest version of its layout and design
program,
Adobe InDesign CS2. This new version improves the
speed and efficiency of designers in a variety of workflows from
text-intensive book, magazine, and newspaper production to high-end
XML-based cross-media workflows. Designers can increase productivity
and create more consistent designs by saving graphic, text, and
frame-level attributes as Object Styles, which are easy to apply and
globally update. Exporting objects with the new InDesign snippets
features enables users to easily share or repurpose live InDesign
content and layouts from part of a page.

story posted today quotes Quark's UK marketing director Gavin
Drake as saying, "There is no question that a small number of
customers have or are switching to InDesign for various reasons and we
wish them every success in this. However you have to put this in
context, which is that this represents a very small percentage of the
UK market and is certainly not a trend."
I say when BBC Magazines is one of those small numbers along with
Hearst Publishing in the US, it may not be a trend, but it's sure
heading in that direction.

03/13/2003 10:22 AM
At long last, Quark has posted a teaser
page about XPress 6, the Carbonized, coming-sometime version of
their page layout app. Sigh.
I used to be a graphic designer. I lived in Quark XPress.
Thousands of hours, thousands of pages. I still remember the keyboard
shortcut for "decrease tracking by 1/200th of an em," though I would
rather not. It's not my bread and butter anymore, but I've been
following the app's creep toward OS X, and like most have been boggled
by the slow pace. In many cases this is the only thing binding design
pros to OS 9. They want to migrate to OS X, but they can't.
As of this moment the page says almost nothing about the new version,
only noting "enhanced undo functionality, full-resolution previews,
and an intriguing way to manage complex projects." Strikingly
uninformative -- and the screen shot promises little new other than
Aqua trim on XPress's well-worn, spartan interface. Of course, we
shouldn't judge print apps by web time. The task of publishing a
magazine is substantially the same now as it was ten years ago, and
most large publishing workgroups are slow to upgrade because of myriad
software dependencies (I wonder how far they're gotten with updating
QPS?). The important
thing is that they get this thing out the frickin' door.
Though Quark is widely criticized in the industry for an
unresponsive attitude toward customers, I really would like them to
survive, because I believe that an Adobe monopoly -- which is what we
are heading for -- would ultimately be bad for the industry. Discuss

Collaborative Mapping
01/07/2004 02:04 PMEdward Mac Gillavry has a paper on collaborative mapping that comes at
the idea from a different angle than does Matt Haughey's suggestion
that someone combine a mapping system with a Slashdot-like system to
do collaborative routing: Collaborative mapping is an initiative to
collectively produce models of real-world locations online that people
can then access and use to virtually annotate locations in space. Mac
Gillavry points to two aspects of collaborative mapping: 1. Generating
maps by mapping with your feet, so to speak. For example, at Waag.org,
you can see maps of Amsterdam generated by aggregating data from
people carrying...

with this one was that it was a collaboration between myself and Natalie over nearly 5,000 miles,

instantly try them out.
I haven't tested it very thoroughly at all so if there are any
glaring abominations leave me a comment - I know about the blogmarks
looking slightly out of place in IE 6 but I haven't quite decided if I can be

Next month I'll be giving a talk on social software to an audience of
CTOs. To prime the pump, I've been spending some time with two of the
newer services in the space: Flickr and del.icio.us. Neither focuses primarily
on the six-degrees-of-separation dynamic that drives LinkedIn, Orkut,
Friendster, and Spoke. Flickr, as I would explain it to my friends and
family, is a way to easily upload and share digital photos. And
del.icio.us does the same thing for Web bookmarks.
To CTOs, though, I'd say that both are collaborative systems for
building a shared database of items, developing a metadata vocabulary
about the items, performing metadata-driven queries, and monitoring
change in areas of interest. [Full story at

While I was on vacation, this column percolated through the
infosphere. Now that I'm back, I'm seeing some interesting ripple
effects. It had already been apparent that in addition to monitoring
the blog conversations swirling around a column, it would be
interesting to monitor the del.icio.us traffic too. Not surprisingly,
those two views have now begun to merge.
