Windows Media Player 10 Beta Debuts

Windows Media Player 10 Beta Debuts 06/06/2004 01:47 AM
Two and a half years after previewing the previous "Corona" generation of its media platform, Microsoft has let loose a technical beta of Windows Media Player 10. WMP 10 includes additional access to online music stores, as well as increased support for digital media devices. On the outside, the beta features an improved user interface and an enhanced jukebox mode.

D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player

D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player 06/15/2004 06:54 AM

dlink_dsm320.jpg image

While it's one of the first wireless media players to come with 802.11g WiFi stock standard, a few usability hang-ups prevent PC Magazine's review team from giving the D-Link DSM-320 a better than average score. It's got all the media playback mojo you'd expect from these modern day VCRs (which are really just hardware front-ends to your computer's media collection), yet the file browsing has some serious limitations (like no 'play album' selections and a broken search algorithm), there is a single, obnoxious screen saver, and the streaming internet radio is limited to only AOL Radio, leaving behind the thousands of free stations of the web. Up the upside, the hardware is solid, with lots of I/O ports and a decent remote, and most of the issues software based, meaning there's no reason that D-Link couldn't fix them in the future. For $170, you could almost risk buying it now and trusting D-Link to patch the firmware later.

d-link_dsm-320.jpg imageThe Apple Airport Express (shipping this week, by the way) is a decent option for those already using iTunes, but what if you want to stream more than that? NoDRM takes a(nother) look at one option, the D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Multimedia Player, an 802.11g-enabled streaming media outlet that can stream not only audio, but all sort of different kinds of video -- most of the major video formats in fact (even DVD VOB files). The only real downside they see to the $166 player is the inability to change the aspect ratio of video (which can lead to movies looking oddly smushed) and the inability of 802.11g to always provide enough bandwidth to stream video over even relatively short distances, say, from a downstairs computer to an upstairs Multimedia Player. Of course, you can always fall back on wired Ethernet.

BBC Internet Radio Player
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/

The BBC re-launches its Internet Radio Player to make almost every BBC Radio programme available live and on-demand for seven days after broadcast, creating a massive, ever-changing library of music, talk shows, dramas and documentaries. Latest figures show more than 10 million hours of BBC radio is consumed online per month and, from 25 January, the new Radio Player will offer 500 extra hours of programming and offer a range of new features. The re-launch puts audiences in control of their listening, allowing them to listen at convenient times, control their schedules and fast-forward through programmes while exposing them to new shows - and perhaps whole networks - they otherwise wouldn't come across. The new Player provides all the programmes and benefits of the current model - which makes many of the BBC's radio programmes available online - but includes over 80 more programmes, making virtually all of the BBC's national radio output available on-demand via the Internet. DesignFRONT Acrylic Radio and CD Player

DesignFRONT Acrylic Radio and CD Player 07/09/2004 10:22 AM

frontdesign_radio.jpg image

Our pal Josh Rubin points out some new stuff from DesignFRONT (or FRONT Design -- we can't keep up with these fancy Swedes), including these two lovely pieces of electronics work that appear to be set in hard acrylic. The left one is a regular stereo receiver, and the right is a CD player that is reminiscent of the speakers we showed you a couple of months back. I bet they'd look fantastic all of a set.

Is there anything in the world better than a group of foxy Swedish ladies making beautiful electronics? That isn't Schedule 1 already?
