AMD chip security
AMD chip security
08/15/2004 01:57 PMThis month’s
Cryptogram, a publication on security, technology
and much more, has an interesting snip on a problem with the new
AMD chips. AMD have
recently been shouting about how exciting their
No
e
Xecute technology is on the Opterons, and how it will stop
nasty code from executing. However, they don't seem to keen to discuss
a potentially major security flaw in the chips.
Essentially, the problem lies in the K8 line of chips, which includes
the much celebrated 64 bit Athlon and the Opteron chip, and the way
they update themselves. A Microcode (or bios updates) update allows
chip makers to change code on the chip where it is faulty, saving the
hassle of an expensive product recall. Using this technique, AMD
patched up a problem
discovered recently. A useful feature, one
might think. However, AMD chips that do this (K7's don't/didn't after
they discovered a problem with it!) don't appear to have any security
or validation checks on Microcode updates. As such...
"
If one is able to get root access on a machine even once, it
is hypothetically possible to install a microcode update specifically
to help compromise security from userspace at a later time. Such an
update could be flashed into the BIOS to make it persistent across
reboots."
Intel has had a
problem with this (Microcode validation), but have got around it via
implementing
encryption and authentication technology; AMD have
yet to do this.
Real World Tech, the discovers of this issue, also
speculate that, in a hypothetical situation, it might be possible also
to do serious physical damage to a AMD K8 chip.
All in all, a rather depressing report for users that have shelled out
big bucks for these new chips. Certainly not the kind of performance
one would expect from AMD, a company that needs a tip top reputation
to maintain it's level of high regard from the IT professional
community to successfully compete with chip giant Intel.

Chips may be implanted in imported dogs to prevent rabies
TOKYO — Japan plans to implant microchips under the skin of
imported dogs in order to prevent rabies from making inroads into the
country, government officials said Tuesday.
The plan intended for strict individual recognition of imported
dogs was confirmed the same day at a meeting on the nation's
quarantine system against rabies of the Ministry of Agriculture,
Forestry and Fisheries and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare,
the officials said. (Kyodo News)

Things that I have seen in Mexico so far
Things that I have seen in Mexico so far
12/17/2004 06:36 PMHere are some random things that I have observed so far on this
trip to Mexico:
- eight Mexicans speaking English to each other all night at a
dinner party so that their one American guest (me) would not feel left
out
- a family gathered around the grave of a loved one offering me a
drink of whiskey
- families staying up all night with musicians and refreshments
- two Japanese tourists, complete with nametags and three cameras,
marching in Santa Maria del Tule's "Parade of Death"
- three tall white Americans dressed by REI and bedizened with
cameras in a small village's graveyard saying "we're not
tourists, we're photographers"
- tens of thousands of flowers for sale in an open-air market with
upbeat Latin music playing
- enormous banners hanging from the sides of churches and cathedrals
arguing against the legalization of abortion (abortion is currently
illegal in Mexico but if you have USD$3000 you can get breast
augmentation, laser hair removal, Viagra ("30% off" according to the
big signs in Oaxacan pharmacies), and a procedure in a discreet
private clinic)
- Spanish-speakers cringing in pain when I pronounce Oaxaca
"Oh-axe-a-ka" (to be consistent with the English pronunciation of a
hard "ex" in "Mexico")
- multi-acre downtown cactus garden from the balcony of one of the
world's best prehispanic art museums
- a brass band playing and costumed locals dancing for hours
underneath the balcony next to my restaurant table on the main square
in Oaxaca
In addition to seeing a lot of interesting and fun things I found a
good job to apply for once I get my commercial helicopter
rating. It seems that on the north shores of the Hawaiian
islands there are surfers who pay to be dropped from a
helicopter into the middle of a swell. From there they get
onto a jetski and are towed to the top of the 18-24 foot waves that
are typical in the Hawaiian winter. One would need an
endorsement to be legal to carry surfboards externally strapped to the
helicopter skids but otherwise it didn't sound too challenging and
you'd be meeting cool people all day.
