Virtual Keyboard Really Exists!
Virtual Keyboard Really Exists!
02/11/2004 01:24 AMSomebody hide my wallet! MobilePlanet has ultra-cool,
George-Jetson-ish Virtual Keyboard
for sale for $99.95! The specs say it works with most Palms and uses a
USB/Serial Connector. I'm going to guess that means it doesn't work
with the Treo 600, but how do I tell??????[via Daily Palm]
"The Virtual Laser Keyboard leverages the power of laser and
infrared technology and projects a full-size keyboard onto any flat
surface. As you type on the laser projection; it analyzes what you're
typing by the coordinates of that location....
The Virtual Laser Keyboard requires no special training. The light
weight device weighs two ounces and is similar in size to a disposable
cigarette lighter. The Virtual Laser Keyboard includes a
self-contained, rechargeable lithium ion battery. It provides the
Virtual Laser Keyboard with its own internal power supply, so it
doesn't drain any battery power from the PDA or PC. The battery lasts
three to four hours, more than enough time to do some instant
messaging and SMS messaging from the handheld device or to update
calendar and phone book entries."
I want, I want, I want!
Also on the list for tonight is to try out the supposedly released
the new RealPlayer that supports the Treo
600. I think it still doesn't handle streaming, though, which would be
the whole, fricking point.

The Yahoo Browser Exists
06/17/2005 04:33 PMAnd is has for quite some time. This recent speculation is fun and
all, but WTF? Try a search for yahoo browser and you'll end up on this
page, which describes the SBC Yahoo! Browser. I seem to remember there
being a Yahoo! branded web browser at least as far back as 1999 when I
joined Yahoo. I guess you could say we've been there, done that, and
probably even made some t-shirts back in the day. These are not...

China Gets Wired... But Digital Divide
Exists
07/21/2004 02:54 AMThe internet is growing in China, as they
now have 87
million people online, though they are apparently connecting
through just 36.3 million internet connected computers. The number of
Chinese netizens puts them firmly in second place, though just about
everyone expects them to take first place before long. That 87
million represents just 6.6% of the population, which may point to a
bigger issue. While the US worries about the "digital divide," it
looks like a much bigger issue in China. Internet usage is much more
common in more developed areas, and many seem worried that less
developed areas will get left even further behind. While the Chinese
government has tried to go online, the study found that most such
sites are unused, and many government officials prefer not to use
their own websites. None of this is particularly surprising, but it's
still interesting to see the data.

How To Lose The WiFi Market: Forget That
Competition Exists
08/27/2004 02:00 PMAgere, a spinoff of Lucent (itself a spinoff of AT&T), helped define
and create the WiFi market, but now holds a fairly small portion of
the market, and is the number five seller of WiFi chips. In taking a
look at
how Agere "lost" the WiFi market, it simply
appears that they weren't ready for competition from plenty of other
companies -- including a company with a lot more money: Intel. While
the article makes some suggestions (confusion after spinning off their
WiFi product business to focus on just chips, taking their eye off the
ball to focus on not going bankrupt), the more realistic explanation
simply seems to be that they didn't expect as much competition in the
marketplace as they received. If anything, it sounds like, by
"inventing" the market, they expected to keep it forever. They also
seem particularly miffed at Intel's marketing campaign to co-opt WiFi
into their Centrino brand -- leading many people to believe that Intel
created WiFi. When you're blaming your competitor's ability to
outmarket you as the reason you lost a market (especially when it's an
emerging market), it suggests the company simply wasn't prepared to
compete at all.

What can you create on your website that
only exists in finite quantities (and
why people should care)?
07/01/2002 08:30 AMI just read a post on I-Sales about bidding wars on search engine
keywords, and it occured to me that Overture's model is great because
there are only so many words in the English language (or any language
for that matter,) whereas advertising models based on banner inventory
have the laws of supply and demand working against them. With an
increasing number of online users spending more hours online on more
numerous and bigger web sites, page views and ad impressions derived
from them are fighting an uphill battle just to find a buyer, as the
quantity of auto-promotion and banner barter proved even before the
advertising market bust. What is it that you can create on your online
properties that doesn't exist elsewhere in almost infinite quantities
(we mortal humans have trouble telling the difference between
"infinite" and "huge" anyway)? I'm not sure maintream portals la
Yahoo can really differentiate themselves to visitors. Sure, they can
get Pepsi as an advertiser, but what does it mean to you as a user? So
far it's only been meaning more intrusion and privacy snafus, and
generically speaking looking more and more like TV, a medium that 100%
of households happen to already get, well, on TV.Now if online
targetting means anything as a way to attract advertisers, that's
where the Internet comes with unique strengths. Here I'm not so much
mentioning the usual demographics/psychographics targetting, as much
as the ability to address very specific needs in a detailed way. And
what enables niche sites to reach their potential users? Exactly,
search engines. How's that for a circular post? It works well except I
just forgot to make a point here!OK, so my point is, ultra-targeted
online properties make sense to users (either for free or for a fee,
as I've been arguing lately on TheEndOfFree), they make sense for
publishers (if only to nail down an effective USP,) and they should
make sense for advertisers as well if it becomes easier for them to
purchase and manage "niche online campaigns." Online business success
is probably a matter of creating products (content and services for
users, ad space for advertisers,) that exist in finite quantities to
protect the value of both content and ad inventory. It's of course
mainly the work of site owners to identify and service niches the best
they can. Thinking beyond plain static content, into databases and/or
community is probably a good direction to look into (when database and
community meet, that's eBay and see how powerful a combination it can
become.)But we as customers or ad campaign managers need to grow
beyond a spoilt kid attitude. The great feeling of infinity we get on
the Internet is liberating as a whole, and I only wish more people
enjoy it and contribute to it in the future. However, this perception
has debilitating effects to niche sites which struggle to get
acknowledged by users and advertisers for the unique value they
provide. And it's counter-productive and sad to realize and miss the
value only until after it's lost (my mother keeps telling me this
too!)Next time you discover a great site that appeals to your
interests, think about sticking to it in the future. Participate in
its growth, if only by promoting it to your friends. Assuming that
Google will always pick up good stuff for you is dangerous, because
Google doesn't create anything but a collection of links. Always on
the move nomads don't create cities, yet it takes more than temporary
tents to host and grow great sites. The Internet as a whole might feel
infinite, but don't take for granted there are and always will be an
infinite number of alternatives to the sites you love. To conclude on
a less-than stellar image (warning: incoming bad pun,) the universe
might be infinite and growing, but you don't find planets around every
star.Update: We're Broke: The Economics of a Web Community (by rusty
of Kuro5hin)06/24/02 update: It Takes a Village to Save a Site.

Apple Safari browser for Windows already

06/05/2004 10:18 AM"Literally millions of people use a big chunk of Safari on Windows.
It's the browser built into iTunes. It works today," John Allsopp
writes for The Sydney Morning Herald. "So arguably the quickest, most
standards compliant browser around, which by the way is based on the
open source KHTML rendering engine, is available right now on Windows.
And to use iTunes, you need to use it. Apple contributes to the KHTML
project, so many of its innovations will find their way into that
browser. On the Mac, Windows and UNIX variants."

This is how justice works
This is how justice works
01/18/2004 03:49 PMI've had a wonderful weekend. I've had time to watch four movies from
my "DVDs I am going to watch when I retire since I am never going
to have the time before that" -collection, I have eaten well,
slept - well - sufficiently, and still managed to tick off a few
"things to try before you die" -list and move them onto
"cool, I'll do that again" -list.
So, however, this evening, at a business dinner (don't ask: I know
it's Sunday) I make a complete fool of myself by showing up late
(darn). And not only that - my cough which I thought had already
vanished, decides to have its encore right at the same moment I have
introduced myself and am thirstily sipping from a glass of water. And
what an encore it was: in a surprising combination of sight and sound
the cough (with a mouthful of water) bursts out, spraying the water
across the table, completely surprising everyone. Including me.
The whole table stops, forks suspended midway between plate and mouth,
and I feel the cool and curious look of Japanese businessmen fixed on
my neck, as I try to hide and escape under the table. "Are you
ok?", I hear my boss ask faintly - and I stammer something in
reply that nearly, but not quite, sounds like "yes", cheeks
burning. Oh well, there goes my professional reputation...
I guess this is how the universe collects its debt on happiness. I
recall once, in a shower (I do a lot of my thinking in the shower), I
had a wonderful revelation. I don't recall what it was about anymore,
but it was a profound thing - enlightenment, you could say - and I was
so happy about it that the soap slipped from my hand and fell right
into the toilet. So I guess that was the more important lesson to be
learned of the two: close the lid before you shower.
Irony. The most common element in the universe. And what a wonderful
universe it is! ;-).
