fish on -- part two

fish on -- part two 07/14/2004 08:21 PM

The city of Commerce is just fifteen minutes down the freeway from Hollywood, but the Commerce Casino is a thousand miles away from Odessa. There's no alley to walk down, no bouncer to deal with, and you're more likely to talk to a valet than a crackhead on your way into the club.

From The Standard, we drove across the 10 and picked up the 5 in the East LA interchange. Even though it was after ten, it was backed up like rush hour. I pointed at a sign that advised 45 MPH on the turn.

"Since I was sixteen, every time I pass that sign, I laugh. I don't think 45 has ever been a reduction in my speed through here." I said.

"Do you have to get up early tomorrow?" I said.

"No. I'm going to the Dodger game at 1," he said.

"Want to get out of here and go play cards?"

"Are you finally taking me to Odessa?"

"No. It's Saturday, so it's a dance club tonight," I said. "I hear it gets pretty crazy."

"Plato's retreat crazy?" he said.

"You stole that from my blog!" I said.

We both laughed.

"Let's go to Commerce," I said.

John Lautner's Chemosphere: part

Modern.
04/07/2005 12:53 PM
The most modern home built in the world. "From the outside it looks like a spaceship you cannot enter. But if you go inside, it feels very cozy… very Zen and calming. Maybe because you are floating above the city, in the sky". John Lautner's Chemosphere residence is the product of a fortuitous union of architect, client, time and place. Leonard Malin was a young aerospace engineer in late-1950s L.A. whose father-in-law had just given him a plot north of Mulholland Drive, near Laurel Canyon. The only catch: at roughly 45 degrees, the slope was all but unbuildable. Lautner sketched a bold vertical line, a cross, and a curve above it. "Draw it up," he told his assistant. Now publisher Benedik t Taschen owns Chemosphere (NSFW), and after 20 years of neglect the house has been beautifully restored (.pdf) by Frank Escher.

Big Fish

Big Fish 05/13/2004 10:53 AM

I've always admired Tim Burton's imagination and enjoyed his movies, even if many of them are uneven. Since I missed Big Fish when it was in theaters last year, I've been looking forward to seeing it on DVD. Well, last night I finally watched it - and now I really wish I'd seen it on the big screen.

Forget the poor reviews. This was - by far - his best work, and ranks as one of my favorite movies. Watch it if you get the chance!

(Yeah, I know this has nothing to do with my software, but I'm a movie buff as well as a software guy, so what the heck...)

The Starving Ocean : A large collection of articles by Debbie MacKenzie on the death of the ocean. The idea is that removing most of the fish from the sea might be sort of bad for the marine ecosystem as a whole. Her writing style is a bit kooky, but she has been right on some points (ie. the Grey Seal thing). Oh, and fishing is also responsible for the rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Frozen seas. A brief but kind of amazing collection of photos of the deck of a fishing trauler in fridgid conditions, where every exposed surface has layers of frozen saltwater accumulated. See Inside Your Fish Tank

See Inside Your Fish Tank 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

underwatertank_small_1_.jpgSo we missed this when Red Ferret Journal first talked about it last week, but shiny shiny just picked it up, bless their hearts. The Underwater Tank is an aquarium with a reverse periscope, allowing you to peer into the hearts and souls of your fish, with a feeder positioned right near the scope's lens, letting you watch them eat.

The periscope lets you inspect your fish at their own level, and a fish feeder has been positioned right by the scope's lens, so you can watch your fish feed. Use slow gentle movements so you don’t create turbulence in the water and disturb or frighten your fish.
Or you can look at this the way I do: as a $50.00 Fish Blender.

Vodafone May Have Bigger Fish To Fry -

Vodafone May Have Bigger Fish To Fry -
Or Not
02/10/2004 05:32 PM
Talk about surprise endings... The big story everyone's been focused on in the wireless world over the past few weeks is the battle for AT&T Wireless. Everyone's been watching what Cingular, DoCoMo and Vodafone are going to do. The latest rumor, though, is that Vodafone might have even bigger ideas in mind. Instead of just looking at the $4 0 billion they might spend on AT&T Wireless, they're exploring the possibility of a $ 150 billion hostile takeover bid of all of Verizon - not just the wireless part (of which, they already own 45%). The plan would then be to sell off the boring non-wireless part of the business and then have full control over Verizon Wireless. Om Malik thinks that this is just a ploy by Vodafone to keep Verizon quiet and willing to buy out Vodafone's 45% of Verizon Wireless without trying to jack up the price. That definitely makes the most sense. Vodafone can do a lot more in pushing their "global" vision with AT&T Wireless (which uses the same network technology as Vodafone around the world) than with Verizon Wireless.
