If a user is logged on with administrative privileges, an attacker who successfully exploited the most severe of these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts with full privileges. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer privileges on the system would be at less risk than users who operate with administrative privileges. Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update immediately.

  • PC Magazine: Windows XP SP2 Has a Dangerous Hole. Windows XP Service Pack 2 promises to raise the security bar for the sometimes beleaguered operating system. Unfortunately, one of the new features could be spoofed so that it reports misleading information about system security, or worse, lets a malicious program watch for an opportunity to do damage without being detected.
  • Robert Scoble gave me a hard time when I advised people to wait a little while to install SP2. I'm still waiting a little longer. (Of course, I have a serious firewall already installed, and take other security measures, and one of the reasons to use SP2 is its enhanced security features, which are clearly better than what Microsoft was selling in XP and XP SP1.)
