Execs Click Away On Email Attachments

Execs Click Away On Email Attachments 07/14/2004 06:51 PM

A few weeks back, we noted that more people than ever were willin g to click on email attachments from friends or colleagues, without considering the potential security problems. Well, now, it turns out that executives (even those supposedly concerned with security) are just as bad. Despite 78% saying they worry most about network security, the same percentage says they click on email attachments from strangers. Apparently, they worry so much about network security because they're part of the problem...

These days, you would think that people would have learned to stop clicking on random attachments sent to them over email. However, a new study suggests that 85% of people would automatically open an attachment sent from a friend or colleague -- which is actually slightly higher than a year ago. The main culprit: apparently these people are used to clicking on all the "humorous" forwards from their friends. Amazingly, it turns out that there are a lot of folks out there who seem to enjoy all that friend spam. In other words, outbreaks of "click on this" style virus attacks aren't going away any time soon.

Email Sentinel Pro 2.6 prevents users from receiving dangerous e-mails, by blocking attachments, scripts, images and spamming techniques before they reach the Inbox folder. Viruses aren't the only reason to be concerned about HTML email. Spammers use email bugs, scripts and images hidden in the HTML to track anyone who opens their email. E-mail Sentinel Pro stops spammers from verifying an address. [PRWEB Jul 15, 2004]

Decompression bombs: email attachments
expanded and expanded and expanded

Decompression bombs: email attachments
expanded and expanded and expanded
02/11/2004 06:56 PM
Here's an interesting security noodle from Yoz Grahame: some (meaningless) data is highly compressible using standard compression algorithms -- what would it do your computer if the payloads in automatically decompressed messages went from 7kb to 100gb?
Here's an example scenario: A mail arrives at your super-barbed-wire-protected mail gateway. The gzip-compressed attachment - only 7k big - is grabbed by the anti-virus scanner, looking for any suspicious signatures. It starts to decompress it and BANG - the resulting file, over 100 gigabytes, crashes the AV scanner and completely fills the hard drive partition in the process.

Fortunately, a good number of the AV scanners that AERAsec tested aren't too vulnerable, but some require patching. Similarly, sending a gzipped-HTML bomb to a browser will crash a fair few of them. Not so scary, then, but nifty in an admirably-nasty way.

theodp writes "Not to be outdone by Amazon's 1-Click patent, Microsoft snagged a patent from the USPTO Tuesday for a Time based hardware button for application launch, which covers causing different actions to occur depending upon whether a button is pressed for a short period of time, a long period of time, or multiple times within a short period of time. So does pressing car radio buttons for different periods of time to change or set stations constitute patent infringement?" What about double-clicking? Seems like a fair amount of prior art. I know my caller ID box requires a "double-click" to delete phone numbers. Also, I may not remember correctly, but I was under the impression that Apple's famous "one-button" mouse allows you to fake a right mouse click if you hold down the button.

Air Force Wind Ensemble Music About 70 pieces are here, almost all in MP3, recorded by Air Force bands. If you played concert band or wind ensemble in high school, some of these will really take you back:
  • Lincolnshire Posey, Grainger
  • First Suite in Eb for Military Band, Holst
  • The Planets, Holst
  • George Washington Bridge, Schuman
There are links to other genres performed by the bands: Country, Dixieland, Jazz, March, Patriotic, Pop, and Winter Holidays. The list isn't exhaustive (no Thunderer?) but there are some gems that are not easy to find recordings of.
