Apparently, it's Microsoft's patching system that needs patching. Yesterday, we noted that Microsoft had decided to skip their monthly patching plans. However, imagine the surprise of the Microsoft people who made this decision to find out that a patch came out anyway. The company is apparently "investigating" how this rogue patch came out. In the meantime, I'm sure we can expect the patch patch sometime soon (probably not on the non-existent monthly schedule).

Security Pipeline obtained access to the first widespread beta of Microsoft's forthcoming Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) during the holidays. Microsoft has said that this beta represents a subset of what will be released when this software is finalized sometime during the first half of 2004. We tested the new software on a couple of test machines, and found it to be very reliable during a couple of days use. It's not recommended that you install this beta in a production environment, however.

Comments on Windows XP Service Pack 2 08/09/2004 05:56 AM
As we reported yesterday, Service Pack 2 for Windows XP has finally been released and is now available for people to download and install on their systems. The file, at just over 250 Megs, is a hefty download yet is packed with new updates well worth getting (Microsoft will allow people to order a CD with it on in due course).

The install took about 5-10 minutes, yet clearly this figure will vary from system to system. After installing and rebooting XP asked me to turn on automatic updates (even before reaching windows). An excellent move on Microsoft's behalf, and one that serves to highlights a growing commitment to security and user safety. On the first run, Microsoft also loads up the new Security Center. The Security Center monitors your Antivirus, Firewall, and Auto Update situation. If it detects anything that is potentially damaging or hazardous, it will prompt you with a warning and give you advice on how to resolve the issue. Microsoft has saved a lot of hassle for users in that if you have Zone Alarm installed, they leave the Windows Firewall off to prevent conflicts.

Less importantly for a Firefox user like me, Internet Explorer has been updated and the new features seem helpful. It seems somewhat nippier that before, and with additions like pop-up blocking make it a slightly more attractive prospect than before; however, it still lacks features like tabbed browsing and standards compliancy that still make some of the new features mute points. To really start winning back people, Microsoft need to get IE 7 out the door with these features (Before longhorn though?).

Asides from these major additions, there are many more subtle changes that XP SP2 has brought in (NX code, improved security and stability). As a user, my computer does seem to be doing tasks a bit faster. The only minor problem; XP re-installed MS Messenger (to be expected), yet continued to load it up even though MSN Messenger is running! Silently wasting 5 megs of Ram, it's annoying, but thankfully removable. I haven't had any of the problems that a few people have mentioned, and would thus recommend SP2 to all.

Moving a wodge that big to that many machines is too much even for the biggest software company on the planet. So the folks at Downhill Battle have seized upon this as an opportunity to prove the substantial noninfringing uses of P2P by releasing a .torrent of SP@ (complete with checksum info so that you can verify that this isn't some malware-riddled trojan, except to the extent that it is a typical piece of the Windows XP OS). In a development that appears from left field, the Chinese government has banned equipment that doesn't conform to WAPI: Never heard of WAPI (Wired Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure)? You're not alone. Neither the IEEE nor the Wi-Fi Alliance has information about it, either, except that it doesn't include Advanced Encryption System (AES) support. The Chinese government's standards agency developed WAPI, and equipment cannot be imported or manufactured for domestic use in China after Dec. 1 without WAPI in it. Perhaps WAPI has a backdoor for government or is the brainchild of a domestic firm? Unknown yet. Intel and others expect to skirt the requirement until at least June, because devices manufactured in the country or imported before Dec. 1 or are part of contracts for delivery that don't support WAPI are still acceptable to sell and use....

Microsoft is planning to notify customers this month it is discontinuing its MSN for Mac OS X internet access service as of May 31. According to CNET News.com, a Microsoft representative said "Beginning May 31, Microsoft will make changes and no longer support the MSN for Mac OS X Internet Software client." Customers will have to get their Internet access elsewhere, although Microsoft is encouraging Mac users to continue to access MSN services via a browser." Microsoft will be in regular communication with its MSN for Mac customers to ensure options are clearly communicated and the transition is as smooth as possible," the company said. Following Apple's introduction of the Safari browser, Microsoft discontinued its Internet Explorer browser for the Mac, but the company continues to make other products for the Mac, most notably a Mac version of Office. The company reiterated on Friday that it is not abandoning the Mac. "Microsoft’s Mac BU remains committed to the Mac platform and its customers," Microsoft said, noting recent updates to Office and the introduction of a new version of MSN Messenger for Mac.

Last year during the launch of the Treo 650, one of the overlooked bits of news was that the mail client would work with Microsoft Exchange Server (well, not totally overlooked, but you know what I mean). Now Microsoft has announced a deal to license a similar function to Symbian-powered smartphones, which is generally seen as a move to fight off RIM's BlackBerry mail service, which is moving out onto non-RIM phones like the Siemens SK65. Good news if you've got a business that runs an Exchange server, but not all that interesting if you're just a shlub like me with a great big IMAP account. Expect to see Symbian phones with the functionality next year.

And while you're over at MobileTracker, you might check out Jon's video of the Samsung A970, the EV-DO phone that eats like a camcorder.
