Verizon Doubles DSL Speed

Verizon Doubles DSL Speed 09/07/2004 11:25 PM

Verizon Communications has doubled the speed of consumer DSL service is a dozen east coast states. If the market reacts well, the remaining states will receive the same faster DSL alternative. The additional bandwidth is a reaction to Comcast's doubling the speed of its cable broadband service, earlier this year. The extra bandwidth will be a big hit with online gamers and professionals who work from home.

For about $40 a month, the new DSL bandwidth will be 3 Mbps, downstream, and 768 Kbps, upstream. For cost-conscious customers who only send and receive e-mail and surf occasionally, a half-speed option will be available for $30 a month.

Dave's Opinion
Just over half of online Americans have broadband service at home: 63 million or 51 percent. There's always a use for more bandwidth, even by those who don't consider themselves technically sophisticated or have flexibility in their personal schedules. When it comes to network connectivity, faster is always better.

Looks like Serial ATA is bringing even more benefits of SCSI technology to we consumers, namely a new industry-standard Native Command Queuing (NCQ) technology that we'll first get a taste of in Seagate's new Barracuda 7200.7. What makes NCQ drives so interesting are their ability to more efficiently cache requests...

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM

ifd-iv.jpg imageFor embedded computing hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection; that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around $2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives instead.

Update: Reader Tom Lee brings up a much cheaper option for hackers on a budget (after the jump.)

Google Doubles Your Space

Google Doubles Your Space 04/01/2005 02:01 AM

A year after unveiling a free e-mail service with a full gigabyte of storage, Google is doubling the capacity of each account and plans to keep bumping up the limit in the future. Once the upgrade takes effect Friday, Gmail users will be able to store up to 2 gigabytes of e-mail and attachments for each account. Even more capacity will be made available after that as it becomes feasible, the company said.

AllOfMP3 Doubles Rates

AllOfMP3 Doubles Rates 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

allof3c.jpg imageAllOfMP3, why hast thou forsaken me? These are the plaintive words of a cheapskate who has just learned that his favorite Russian music download service is about to double its rate for music downloads from $0.01 to $0.02 a MB. It's still a fantastic deal—knowing that I'm forcing the starving children of musicians to eat a sour gruel made from the remnants of overstock Amy Grant guitar tab is just a bonus—but it's also twice as expensive, which makes my eye patch droop a little. The company is claiming "new licensing conditions" are forcing their hand. Which licensing agency would that be and how much of the money will they be getting? It's enough to make a miser cry (if I could afford the salt).
