The purpose of SHAT (Source Hardware Address Translator) is to support wireless clients regardless of the configuration of their IP stack. The current approach lives in userland. The idea is to filter and forward data between an Ethernet interface and a TUN interface. TCP/IP port scanning between wireless clients can be prevented to some extrend by attracting all traffic using similar mechanisms as implemented with SHAT.
Changes:
The scan protection now cooperates with zero config protocol ARP packets.

Hybird Auto Accidents

Hybird Auto Accidents 05/04/2004 03:13 PM

Rescuers prep for hybrid car accidents: Some interesting questions here. Are electric motors more dangerous that internal combustion engines in the event of an accident? What happens if someone drives one into a lake? Will anyone attempting to rescue the occupants get shocked?

Hybrids draw power from two sources, typically a gas or diesel engine combined with an electric motor. The battery powering the electric motor carries as much as 500 volts, more than 40 times the strength of a standard battery.

That worries those who must cut into cars to rescue people inside. "If you can't shut it down, you don't know where the high voltage is," said David Dalrymple, an emergency medical technician...

From Autonomous Vehicles That Crash To
Autonomous Vehicles That Learn
05/12/2004 12:53 PM
While some people considered DARPA's Grand Challenge race a flop when the autonomous vehicles failed to get very far, many involved thought that it was a good start, and with a little more time in the shop they could build autonomous vehicles that could successfully navigate the course. DARPA, however, seems to want to go in another direction. It seems like a bit of a kneejerk reaction away from where things were already headed, but now they say they want to focus on auton omous learning vehicles. The idea is that a smarter autonomous vehicle would learn to recognize a pothole and avoid it the next time one came around. All this really does, though, is add to the complexity of the vehicle, without necessarily leading to much benefit. Learning systems have a mixed history with most systems not doing all that well. To achieve this plan, though, DARPA plans to hold a series of races between a "learning" vehicle and a regular autonomous robotic vehicle, with the goal being for the learning vehicle to get much better each time. It's a little unclear if this new direction is separate from the regular autonomous Grand Challenge or an attempt to replace it. Still, some of those involved with the Grand Challenge say their systems will contain some amount of adaptive learning. However, the general consensus is that, for right now, it's more productive to focus on autonomous machines and let the humans do the learning.

While Scout recently reported on hybrid automobiles from the current make and model point of view, this topic in depth explores the history and technology of electric and hybrid cars and considers the options available for car buyers and the future of fuel cell technology. This article from the Detroit News suggests electric vehicles are becoming popular (1). The second website (1) provides an interactive history and archived documents about the development of electric vehicles. The third link describes a specific program involving U.S. corporations and the Federal government (2). The fourth link takes you to Argonne Laboratories transportation website, which provides articles and reviews recent research developments (3). If you are looking to buy an electric or hybrid car this website provides information on the various alternative vehicles and, and California residents can find out about state government-sponsored incentives for car buyers (4). This last website from the Why Files offers an analysis of some of the pros and cons of electric vehicles and suggests fuel cells have more potential (5). imageThe autonomous drones are back - and this time it's personal! These new OAVs - short for Organic Aerial Vehicles, although 'organic' doesn't mean what you think it means - come in three sizes, can travel up to 30 knots in light rain and moderate winds, and will even be able to avoid obstacles like buildings, trees, and other drones.

And if we tell the terrorists we've got flying robot buttplugs coming for them, we may finally have a workable deterrent.

Microwave Technology Will Stop Vehicles

Microwave Technology Will Stop Vehicles 02/05/2005 10:16 PM

Law enforcement may soon be able to “Nuke” your car and stop it wherever and whenever they need it stopped.  James Tatoian, chief executive of Eureka Aerospace in Pasadena, California, is developing a system that uses microwave energy to interfere with microchips inside cars. Once the chip is overloaded with excessive current, the car ceases to function, and will gradually decelerate on its own, he said. "If you put approximately 10 or 15 kilovolts per meter on a target for a few seconds, you should be able to bring it to a halt,"

Most cars built in the United States since 1982 have some type of on-board microprocessor. Today, the processors are advanced enough to control functions such as fuel injection and GPS equipment.  Eureka Aerospace hopes to have a working prototype that the sheriff's department can test by late summer. The National Institute of Justice and the U.S. Marine Corps may also be potential early clients. The company's early tests indicate that the car-stopping device should be functional at a range of 300 feet.  If the technology is able to prove worthy, it may also change the behavior of potential criminals. Heal said most people who lead police on car chases have never committed such an act before, and they might think twice if they recall the presence of such a device.

ipod_hhr.jpgGM has announced that some of their 2006 line will include a standard minijack, allowing you to plug in your MP3 player using its headphone jack. I've seen a few stereo units with this functionality, but GM is the first to announce it as a built-in, universal (read: not iPod-exclusive) feature across the product line. I really think we should have seen these years ago, when portable CD players first became popular, but I obviously don't work for a major auto manufacturer. The new jack will be available on radios in their new Chevy HHR, Impala and Monte Carlo as well as the Cadillac DTS and a few others. The downside to opting for a standard mini-jack instead of using iPod's Dock Connector, of course, is that your car can't charge your iPod nor control it through your steering wheel's buttons.

Toyota i-foot and i-unit Robot Vehicles

Toyota i-foot and i-unit Robot Vehicles 12/19/2004 03:41 PM
Move over Segway, Toyota has revealed two robotic exoskeleton-like vehicles designed for transporting humans. Toyota prefers to call them "wearable personal mobility vehicles". The i-foot is a two-legged walker with an egg-shaped cockpit for a seated human rider. The i-unit is a 4-wheeled vehicle with a single seat that is upright for slow travel and reclines for high-speed travel. Toyota will be demonstrating these new modes of transportation in their booth at the upcoming EXPO 2005 World Exposition, where they'll be introduced by Toyota's music playing robots. More photos are available from Reuters and in a Gizmodo article. The Toyota robots won't be the only robots at EXPO 2005. Their will be a lot of robots actually working at the EXPO, doing garbage collection, cleaning, security, and acting as guides.
