This will only mean anything to readers in the UK, and only cinema-going readers at that. Just before the trailers are shown at Odeon cinemas there is often an ident designed to get you into the filmgoing spirit. This advert resembles an explosion of what appear to be out of focus sparks or fireworks. It's pretty cool. I can now tell the world that the music that accompanies it - music which always gets Cal and I wiggling along approvingly - is by Pete Rodriguez and is called "I Like It (I Like it Like That)". The song can be found on this album and no doubt is circulating on various peer-to-peer networks. I thank you.

Just a few weeks ago we pointed to yet another example of the MPAA sending out bogus takedown letters to people who control servers hosting files that have names that sound like certain movie titles, but clearly have nothing to do with the movie. As we noted then, this shows just one of the many problems with the way the system works. Right now, the entertainment industry can accuse anyone of violating copyright law for distributing a file that the industry has no control over and whoever hosts the file is required by law to take it down. The industry should be required to at least verify that the file is infringing. The same thing has apparently happened in Australia to Linux Australia, but the folks there have realized the false accusation breaks a few laws in Australia, and they've contacted their lawyers to respond to the MPAA's takedown notice. In this case, they were accused of distributing the movies "Grind" and "Twisted" when they were really distributing the Twisted framework and the memory management problem solving tool Valgrind. It's unlikely much will come of this, as the MPAA will apologize... and then keep on sending out bogus takedown notices causing problems for all sorts of perfectly legitimate individuals and companies.

Xeni Jardin: A blogger who describes himself as an "extraordinary ordinary guy in Japan" says this on the 30th anniversary of Hello Kitty:

"Kitty's design was just a crib from ... Musti, created by the Belgian animator/director Ray Goossens (1924-1998) [Ed note: she's the center figure in the BoingBoing graphic at left]. Musti was started as an animation series on TV in 1968, and its picture books were also published. I read some of that books and loved it in my childhood. Although it is evident to everybody that Kitty was an imitation of Musti, Sanrio, the publisher of Hello Kitty have not touched on it. It is said that the total copyright fee for Hello Kitty reaches around 15 billion yen (13.7 million USD) per year, and Sanrio got 23.7 billion yen (21.6 million USD) gross sales in second quarter of 2004. I wonder why they don't feel shady about hiding the fact."

I'm no Hello Kitty historian, and that's news to me. Is it true? Link to post. This guy has a cool blog. His post about Japanese "jinxes" was also interesting.
