DARPA's Grand Challenge Autonomous Road
Race Much More Popular Than Expected
10/30/2003 11:46 PMWe wrote about DARPA's "Grand Challenge" road race when it was
first
announced and then a
few
months ago. In the meantime, it appears that it's really struck a
nerve with a
lot of people. DARPA says they've
received 106
applications to participate, which is a lot more than they
expected. They thought there would be much fewer (under 30)
applicants, and that many wouldn't pass initial scrutiny. The plan
was to announce the entrants by now, but with so many applications,
the review process is taking much longer than expected. The
Challenge, if you haven't been following the story, is to build a
completely autonomous vehicle that can drive on-road and off, which
will have to complete a 250 mile course, all by itself, that will only
be revealed two hours before the race begins.

Autonomous Vehicles That Learn
05/12/2004 12:53 PMWhile some people considered DARPA's Grand Challenge race a flop when
the autonomous vehicles
failed
to get very far, many involved thought that it was a good start,
and with a little more time in the shop they could build autonomous
vehicles that could successfully navigate the course. DARPA, however,
seems to want to go in another direction. It seems like a bit of a
kneejerk reaction away from where things were already headed, but now
they say they want to focus on
auton
omous learning vehicles. The idea is that a smarter
autonomous vehicle would learn to recognize a pothole and avoid it the
next time one came around. All this really does, though, is add to
the complexity of the vehicle, without necessarily leading to much
benefit. Learning systems have a mixed history with most systems not
doing all that well. To achieve this plan, though, DARPA plans to
hold a series of races between a "learning" vehicle and a regular
autonomous robotic vehicle, with the goal being for the learning
vehicle to get much better each time. It's a little unclear if this
new direction is separate from the regular autonomous Grand Challenge
or an attempt to replace it. Still, some of those involved with the
Grand Challenge say their systems will contain some amount of adaptive
learning. However, the general consensus is that, for right now, it's
more productive to focus on autonomous machines and let the humans do
the learning.

Visual Searching by an Autonomous Robot
04/20/2004 03:40 PMWhen a robot needs to guard a region of space within a building, it's
faced with solving geometric
problems known as the Watchman
Problem and the Art
Gallery Problem.
A new paper titled Online
Searching by an Autonomous Robot (PDF format) describes the use of a
KURT3D robot with
a low cost 3D
laser scanner to find realistic solutions to these problems. They
test their work by putting the Linux-based robot through its paces in
the great hall of
Schloss Birlinghoven at Fraunhofer Institute
for Autonomous Intelligent Systems. Video
of the robot in action and 3D scans are available on the website.

MIT Press recently sent us their latest book on
mobile robotics, Introduction
to Autonomous Mobile Robots by Roland Siegwart
of EPFL and Illah R.
Nourbakhsh of CMU. The book provides a load of useful information on
mobile robot locomotion and navigation issues. If you're struggling
with
the problem of how to make your robot get from point A to point B
quickly and efficiently while avoiding obstcles, this book may have
your answer. Read on for the full review.

Autonomous Lawn Mower Competition
06/03/2004 12:31 PMWe just found out that the Institute of
Navigation will be holding their first annual Autonomous Lawn Mower
Competition on June 4th and 5th in Dayton, Ohio. With the
competition just hours away, it's probably too late to get an entry
together but you can still check the
action at this year's event if you're in the area. In addition to
looking for the faster
autonomous lawn mower, robots will be judged on their construction
cost and
projected manufacturing costs of a production model.
No Autonomous Mining Robots, says Minsky
No Autonomous Mining Robots, says Minsky
04/16/2005 07:19 PMAccording to a CNEWS
story on the recent International Symposium on Mine Mechanization
and Automation we are decades away from fully autonomous mining
robots.
Marvin Minsky, who
addressed the conference, said that while it was possible such
machines
could be built, his forecast was gloomy:
"There isn't anything in
the
laboratory right now that is very promising". He notes that one of
the problems is that companies today are financially incapable of
doing
long term research and development because it doesn't turn a fast
profit
for the stockholders. On the upside, tele-operated mining equipment is
feasible and may be a good intermediate step toward full autonomy.

NASA Autonomous Spacecraft Ready to Test
04/04/2005 01:35 PMA New Scientist article says
that NASA hopes to launch a fully autonomous test vehicle on April
15th.
The robot probe is called Demonstration of
Autonomous Rendezvous Technology (DART). DART's goal is to do what
many robots here on Earth are doing these days: GPS-guided waypoint
navigation. Over a 24 hour period DART
will move through 52 steps of direction and velocity changes to
approach
an experimental satellite. GPS will be used to get to the general area
and then a laser sensor system will be used to move within 5 meters of
the satellite. For more information see NASA's DART
factsheet (PDF format).
