Established 1999... 11/03/2003 04:43 PM

Omigod. I completely forgot my weblogging birthday on Saturday. This site has now been going for a full four years and two days. Four years and two days of almost daily pre-fabricated, disposable weblogging goodness. That's one thousand four hundred and sixty three days since I started weblogging. Worse still - that's three thousand nine hundred and forty nine posts. An average of 2.7 posts per day. Dear God. When will it end? Will I never tire of writing this crap? In twenty years, will I have an Established 1999 sign out front? Will I be in total information capturing mode as I'm shoved into an old folks home? Will there be a bloody keyboard in my grave? Will the first thing that happens in Atheist Heaven be that some crotchetty old bastard with a toothless smile hands me an ethereal laptop with spiritual-fidelity wireless soulnet access before demanding that I write something pithy about halos?

Why Established Businesses Screw Up

Why Established Businesses Screw Up 11/03/2003 08:23 PM
I've been a longtime fan of Clayton Christensen's work and recommend it to plenty of people - though, it seems like many people misinterpret his writings. Still, he's now come out with a new book, The Innovator's Solution, which tries to follow the work of his original book describing why successful companies miss out on disruptive technologies. Fast Company is running an article summarizing Christensen's thoughts on why successful companies screw up, and how to prevent that from happening. He comes down especially hard on business school teachings (despite the fact that he teaches at a business school), saying that they're so focused on case studies of successful businesses, it creates managers who believe if they just mimic success stories, everything will turn out fine. While I agree with almost every one of his business points, I'm not sure I completely agree with this one. It seems that most business schools these days claim to be believers in Christensen's ideas - but they just do an awful job teaching them. People end up with the 30 second version of his ideas and miss the real meat. Still, the Fast Company piece does a pretty good job summarizing the overall thesis that basing plans on past data can be dangerous, since it ignores future innovations. Also, he points out that successful companies are drawn to higher end offerings where the margins increase, forgetting that they're opening up the bottom of the market for newer, more innovative and nimble suppliers to attack. In fact, Christensen has decided to put his money where his mouth is, and has started his own consulting firm that is designed to hit back against the McKinsey's and BCG's of the world by offering a much lower pricepoint for services.

Fund established to help Iraqi orphans

Fund established to help Iraqi orphans 03/24/2005 08:15 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: In January, I wrote about the tragic shooting of an Iraqi family by US soldiers that orphaned nine children. Today, a Boing Boing reader named J. Tony Smith emailed me with some good news. The photographer of the heart-stirring images reports that a fund has been established to benefit the children. The following is from an email that the photographer sent to Tony and other people who were moved by the photos.
I'm Chris Hondros, a photographer for Getty Images, and if you're getting this email you wrote me in the aftermath of the terrible incident I photographed in Tal Afar, Iraq, in January.  If you recall, five children were orphaned by U.S. troops who mistakenly shot up their car when they approached a foot patrol.  The pictures of the incident have run all over the world and already done much to address the issue of checkpoint shootings in Iraq.

Many of you expressed a desire to help the family; I'm happy to report that a website for donations has now been set up, www.hassanfamilyfund.org.&# 160;  Money donated to the cause will first go to arranging medical care for Racan, a boy in the car who's spinal column was damaged by one of the bullets and will never walk again unless treatment outside of Iraq is arranged for him.  (Humanitarian workers and others in Iraq are working toward this now.)  Excess funds will go to the extended family (the Hassan's had nine children) and to civil projects in Tal Afar itself, most likely a school built to commemorate the deaths. Any help you can give will be appreciated.

New Group Established to Carry On SATA
Spec Development
09/11/2004 03:58 AM
Dedicated to sustaining the quality, integrity and dissemination of Serial ATA technology, 40 leading computer component and peripheral companies announced today the formation of the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO).

The new organization builds on a long heritage of effective Serial ATA (SATA) organizations starting with SATA 1.0 in early 2000, to SATA II in 2002 and now SATA-IO. The working group's transition to SATA-IO, a formal industry association, indicates the member companies' long-term commitment to continue delivering technology and high-quality specifications that meet the needs of a rapidly changing market.

The current SATA-IO technology roadmap includes enabling the 3Gb/s technology defined in the newest SATA spec, which was released in July. The group also plans to expand membership to include additional optical storage vendors, storage controller and hard drive vendors, system builders, storage semiconductor designers and computer technology designers.

FireWire Web Cams: Apple's iSight Goes

11/19/2003 11:36 PM
The iSight's overall picture quality was noticeably better than that of the other cameras. It almost always provided a sharp, crisply defined image and did the best job with movement and backlighting. The Pyro slightly edged out the iBot in image quality, but the two were closely matched. The Fire-i had the lowest overall picture quality, but it made up for this in other areas. By Matthew Honan (Macworld via MyAppleMenu)

Rizzo: Party Like It's 1999,
Philadelphia! And Chicago Raves

Rizzo: Party Like It's 1999,
Philadelphia! And Chicago Raves
03/14/2005 05:46 PM
Councilman Frank Rizzo suggests Philadelphia re-activate Ricochet network: I'd like to ridicule Rizzo here as I have elsewhere for making statements that have little technical merit and use dubious background research that comes from paid-for policy institute reports. But I can't. This is a very interesting idea, reactivating the former Metricom's ubiquitous low-broadband-speed network as an experiment. While a modern infrastructure is needed for Philadelphia's public-safety purposes and for their broadband proposal, reactivating Ricochet would allow the city to start immediately on bridging the digital divide at an extremely low cost. It's a way to test how the market and citizens respond to faster-than-dial-up. There's very little risk, and the company that owns Metricom's assets appears eager to be involved. But one comment in the story can't stand. Steven Schwendemann, "a vice president for Ricochet Networks Inc., a subsidiary of YDI Wireless," said, "WiFi cannot go through walls." That's a very interesting statement, and I imagine he said in more depth that Wi-Fi can't easily penetrate indoors from distant access points without additional equipment than built-in Wi-Fi adapters. In many mesh Wi-Fi installations, high-gain interior access point/bridges are used to solve that problem. Meanwhile, in Chicago, the city thinks about muni-Fi: the city's early estimates are under $20 million for a network somewhat similar to Philadelphia's upcoming proposal request. Unfortunately, the local alderman who wants to study the idea made this crazy statement: "If you looked at 500,000 Chicago households that presently are accessing the Internet and multiply that by $20 (a month), that could be a huge amount of money," the alderman said. Right, but you'll be offering speeds far below the wired broadband providers--and you probably should not be trumpeting the idea that your goal is to steal customers from existing providers, which is a pretty unlikely proposition. But the good news is that the Heartland Institute is based in Chicago on LaSalle and would thus be forced to leave the socialist city (and its socialist public roads, public lights, public electricity, and public police) into some bastion of democracy elsewhere. Maybe Texas?...

Canadian developer Keynote Theme Park has released two new themes for Apple's Keynote presentation software. Da Vinci (US$19.95) features 61 transparent versions of the master artist's notebook illustrations that you can use for slide backgrounds in addition to three fonts, including one based on his own handwriting. It was created in 1024 x 768 resolution and includes a Photoshop Action that turns any image into a sepia-toned illustration, making it blend with Da Vinci's work. In addition, the company has released Titanium Jr., a free 800 x 600 resolution theme that comes with five photo cutouts. Finally, Keynote Theme Park has also posted on its Web site a video tutorial that shows how to create photo cutouts for any slide background.

What's that you say? You came to BoingBoing to find a link to a Brazilian heavy metal band that performs covers of videogame music? Well, that is good. Because "nino" from the Brazilian band MegaDriver says
"We have released two albums. "Metal Beast: Rise From Your Grave!" A tribute to the game Altered Beast, launched by Sega in 1988. The album contains the complete soundtrack from the game recreated in Heavy-Metal style. And "Metal Axe," A tribute to the game Golden Axe, launched by Sega in 1989. The band have also released an emulator project called "Metal Mame", based on the most popular Arcade emulator, MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator). With "Metal Mame" the fans now can play the original Arcade game with their entire soundtrack remixed by the MegaDriver band. At the band's website there is also available their first "Demo CD", "PUSH START BUTTON", with classic songs from "Castlevania", "Streets Of Rage", "Top Gear", "Street Fighter", etc.

Updated brushed metal guidelines

Updated brushed metal guidelines 11/06/2003 02:45 PM
As reported by Michael Tsai, Apple has updated the Human Interface Guidelines on the issue of metal windows. It is now suggested that any window that “provides a source list to navigate information—for example, iTunes or the Finder” can be a metal window.

The first thing I think of is that NetNewsWire could then use a metal window, since it provides a source list.

The second thing I think is: no way.

The guidelines also say, “Don’t use the brushed metal look indiscriminately. Although it works well for some types of applications, some applications appear too heavy when using this look.”

I would rewrite that to say: “Don’t use the brushed metal look at all. Although some applications (such as iTunes and the Finder) use it, they all look too heavy when using this look.”

Intelligent people may disagree, of course. (And so I point to Unsanity’s Metallifizer.)
