Unlinkable NYT doomed to
google-obscurity
07/14/2004 03:38 PM

The NYT's registration system and expiring pages have doomed them to google-obscurity. Wired News argues that they've gone from being the paper of record to a Web-era irrelevancy, and all to protect a Lexis-Nexis agreement and to bring in two to three percent of the digital division's profits.

But recently, when I googled the terms "Iraq torture prison Abu Ghraib" -- certainly one of the most intensively covered news stories of the year -- the first New York Times article was the 295th search result, trailing the New Yorker, Guardian, ABC and CBS News, New York Post, MSNBC, Slate, CNN, Sydney Morning Herald, Denver Post, USA Today, Bill O'Reilly on FoxNews and a host of others news sites.

There have been tons of stories about students' private data accidentally being placed online, so yet another story about that isn't particularly newsworthy. However, what's amusing about this story, found by the Raw Feed is the response from officials at Johns Hopkins University to the information leak. The leak was first found by a student who did a Google search, and discovered her info was linked from the search engine results. So, with that in mind, you wouldn't really expect a school official to defend the "security through obscurity" practice, but that's exactly what he did: "The file was in a very obscure place. You would have had to gone looking for them." No, you would just have to use Google, which already did the looking part for you.

Michael sez, "Hot on the heels of a Wired article about the irrelevance of NYT thanks to forced registration, The Globe & Mail in Canada has now done the same, and the Toronto Star is about to:"
Registration at thestar.com
We are introducing registration on thestar.com. At first, registration will be voluntary. Later in July we will move to mandatory signups. Readers will have to answer several questions to access stories. Section fronts and some other areas will remain open to everyone for now.

Google IPO: the Prospectus. Of particular interest in this 119-page (not including appendices) monster document are the Risk Factors (there are lots) and the Lett er from the Founders, an "owner's manual" for Google shareholders: "Google is not a conventional company. We do not intend to become one... If opportunities arise that might cause us to sacrifice short term results but are in the best long term interest of our shareholders, we will take those opportunities... We aspire to make Google an institution that makes the world a better place". Of course, if hardcore financial stuff is your bag, there's plenty of that, too.

Democracy By Obscurity 08/23/2004 02:21 PM
It turns out that, not only are the makers of electronic voting machines practicing security by obscurity, those who certify the machines are just as secretive. Call it democracy by obscurity. The certification companies, who are hired by the e-voting machine companies (conflict of interest?) won't reveal what they do to test the machines or the results of any such tests. So, while the e-voting machine companies continue to insist that they're secure, they won't show us how the systems work for others to prove that its secure, and the only people who are certifying the machines are secure are being paid by the vendors themselves and won't reveal their testing methods or results. It's the "just trust us" form of counting votes.

Xeni Jardin: BB reader Matt Billings says:
I work in a semi-public area, and I didn't have a way to lock down my new Mac Mini [to prevent theft]. I needed a way to have it function, but not be too visible. But I had an old Dell case I wasn't using anymore and the gears started turning... after gutting the drive bays, it was almost a perfect fit. I figure nobody would take a second look at this old box. Here are the results.

“Our entire information society rests on a fragile foundation that mathematicians are racing to dismantle. It’s not often that results from conferences on mathematics make the news, but that’s precisely what happened last month at the annual Crypto conference in Santa Barbara, CA when researchers from France, Israel, and China all showed that they had discovered flaws in a widely used algorithm called MD5—an algorithm that I wrote about in some detail last month. Except, interestingly, it allows anyone to send anything to just about anyone else. doomed to fail
02/17/2004 08:43 AM
The United Nations World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) has been doomed to failure from the start. That may seem odd, given both the abundance of free and open source software and the apparent interest by the UN in making such tools available to the impoverished -- a combination that seems a no-brainer. But in spite of the alignment of resource, need, and interest, the WSIS plan will fail. Here's why.
