Security Through Obscurity Thwarted By

02/05/2005 09:48 PMThere have been tons of stories about students' private data
accidentally being placed online, so yet another story about that
isn't particularly newsworthy. However, what's amusing about this
story, found by
the Raw Feed is the response from officials at Johns
Hopkins University to the information leak. The leak was first found
by a student who did a Google search, and discovered her info was
linked from the search engine results. So, with that in mind, you
wouldn't really expect a school official to
defend the "security through obscurity" practice, but
that's exactly what he did: "The file was in a very obscure place. You
would have had to gone looking for them." No, you would just have to
use Google, which already did the looking part for you.

irrelevance of NYT thanks to forced registration, The Globe & Mail
in Canada has now done the same, and the Toronto Star is about to:"
Registration at thestar.com
We are introducing registration on thestar.com. At first, registration
will be voluntary. Later in July we will move to mandatory signups.
Readers will have to answer several questions to access stories.
Section fronts and some other areas will remain open to everyone for

we will take those opportunities... We aspire
to make Google an institution that makes the world a better

there's plenty of that, too.

08/23/2004 02:21 PMIt turns out that, not only are the makers of electronic voting
machines practicing security by obscurity,
those who certify the machines are
just as secretive. Call it democracy by obscurity. The
certification companies, who are hired by the e-voting machine
companies (conflict of interest?) won't reveal what they do to test
the machines or the results of any such tests. So, while the e-voting
machine companies continue to insist that they're secure, they won't
show us how the systems work for others to prove that its secure, and
the only people who are certifying the machines are secure are being
paid by the vendors themselves and won't reveal their testing methods
or results. It's the "just trust us" form of counting votes.

I work in a semi-public area, and I didn't have a way to lock down my
new Mac Mini [to prevent theft]. I needed a way to have it function,
but not be too visible. But I had an old Dell case I wasn't using
anymore and the gears started turning... after gutting the drive bays,
it was almost a perfect fit. I figure nobody would take a second look
at this old box. Here are the results.

02/17/2004 08:43 AMThe United Nations World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) has been
doomed to failure from the start. That may seem odd, given both the
abundance of free and open source software and the apparent interest
by the UN in making such tools available to the impoverished -- a
combination that seems a no-brainer. But in spite of the alignment of
resource, need, and interest, the WSIS plan will fail. Here's why.
