Origin of colour-trends

Origin of colour-trends 07/14/2004 03:38 PM

Teresa Nielsen Hayden has written an amazing, heavily linked, well-researched piece on the Color Marketing Group, a trade association that determines each season's "in" colours and dictates the national pallette.

I knew what was up with the big khaki push. Remember that one? Ads everywhere saying "Hemingway wore khaki"? We'd all been wearing black for several years. We had black levis, good black skirts, black leather or denim jackets, little black dresses—a great installed user base of basic black clothing, plus the colored stuff we wore with it. I hadn't heard anyone sighing for the return of khaki, and if I had, I'd have pointed them to one of the WASP mail-order catalogues. What's the big deal with khaki? It gets dirty too easily, and for a lot of people it's an unbecoming color. But there's only so much new black clothing you can sell a happy consumer who already has a closet full of black-and-coordinates; so the clothing industry pushed khaki remorselessly.

RFC for origin of "foo"

RFC for origin of "foo" 01/04/2004 09:37 PM
Noting that hundreds of Internet RFCs "contain the terms `foo', `bar', or `foobar' as metasyntactic variables without any proper explanation or definition," this old April Fools RFC examines the roots of Foo, Bar and fubar.
For, it seems, the word `foo' itself had an immediate prewar history in comic strips and cartoons. In the 1938 Warner Brothers cartoon directed by Robert Clampett, "The Daffy Doc", a very early version of Daffy Duck holds up a sign saying "SILENCE IS FOO!" `FOO' and `BAR' also occurred in Walt Kelly's "Pogo" strips. The earliest documented uses were in the surrealist "Smokey Stover" comic strip by Bill Holman about a fireman. This comic strip appeared in various American comics including "Everybody's" between about 1930 and 1952. It frequently included the word "FOO" on license plates of cars, in nonsense sayings in the background of some frames such as "He who foos last foos best" or "Many smoke but foo men chew", and had Smokey say "Where there's foo, there's fire". Bill Holman, the author of the strip, filled it with odd jokes and personal contrivances, including other

Origin of the terms "BCE/CE" for dates?

Origin of the terms "BCE/CE" for dates? 07/12/2004 02:42 AM

A friend who blames Jews for all of the ills that he perceives in American society asked me if it was a Jew who started using "BCE" ("Before the Common Era" rather than BC or "Before Christ") for dates of events that occurred more than 2004 years ago.  Being a scientist and engineer he had only recently come across this coinage and was convinced that it part of a contemporary Jewish plot to deestablish Christianity as America's default religion.

My response was that I believed BCE/CE instead of BC/AD was a bit of 19th century academic pedantry.  I remember seeing the term on yellowed labels next to objects in museums that had been gathering dust for 50+ years.  Given that Jews had only recently escaped from their ghettos in the 19th century and that most classics or Bible scholars would have come from wealthier families, I thought it highly unlikely that a Jew coined the term.  Most likely I thought it was Christian scholars who wished to employ a bit of jargon to make their professional work appear more scientific.  The only etymological reference that I could find was this Word IQ article, that talks about the appearance of the term "Common Era" in a 1908 encyclopedia published by the Roman Catholic Church.

Anyone have a better source for settling this question?  The Oxford English Dictionary and first Supplement don't contain "BCE" or "Common Era".

Colour Schemes

Colour Schemes 05/14/2004 03:13 PM

A designer's 'style' is made up of a number of different factors, though colour plays a large role. Everyone has their own method of coming up with a good colour scheme, which will inevitably affect the results.

Technical

A 'technical' method of colour-selection involves choosing one or two dominant colours from the colour wheel, to be used with a small set of complementary colours. Basic colour theory concepts like split complementary and triadic colour schemes offer a wide range of variation, particularly when you start throwing in shades, tints, and saturation adjustments.

Technical colour scheme samples

Pro: An easy way to start with good, workable colour. Con: being too technical can lead to dull and uninspired colour choice.

Matching

Matching involves starting with an image or an object (usually a photograph) and picking colours from within to generate a colour scheme. Boxes and Arrows ran a great article a while ago about selecting colours from nature.

Matching colour scheme samples

Pro: Naturalistic, familiar-feeling colour schemes that appeal. Con: it's easy to select the wrong colours from a photo.

Intuition

Probably my most frequently-used method. I begin with a blank canvas and fill it with whatever colours seem appropriate. Naturally my mind computes the corresponding compliementary and similar colours on the fly, but now and then I'll ignore solid colour theory just to see where it gets me. Hence this site's colour scheme, among others.

Pro: Fresh and surprising colour schemes. Con: dangerous without a solid knowledge of colour theory. Dangerous even with.

These are a few of my own methods, and what influences my design sensibility. Others will differ, of course. Tell me about your own methods, comments are open.

BitTorrent v4.0.1

BitTorrent v4.0.1 03/25/2005 09:08 PM
BitTorrent is a protocol designed for transferring files. It is peer-to-peer in nature, as users connect to each other directly to send and receive portions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker) which coordinates the action of all such peers. The tracker only manages connections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of the files being distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be supported with relatively limited tracker bandwidth. BitTorrent Will Not Go Away

BitTorrent Will Not Go Away 03/17/2005 03:08 AM
There was an article I read in Yahoo News from the Washington Post on BitTorrents. It explains that too many legit uses exist for BitTorrent for the service to be shut down. The MPAA is admitting that there are good and bad uses for BitTorrent and that they will only go after people that are helping users to download illegal movies. It's good to see a mianstream media outlet like the Washington Post understand the real concept and design behind BitTorrents.

This represents a shift from previous practices, in which the MPAA, the Recording Industry Association of America (news - web sites) and other groups have tried to have entire products -- for example, the first Diamond Rio MP3 player or the networked ReplayTV (news - web sites) video recorder -- taken off the market. One reason for this change of heart may be that in BitTorrent, unlike many other file-sharing programs, legitimate use doesn't amount to a token minority. It's central to this program's existence. Developers of versions of the Linux (news - web sites) operating system were some of the first to jump on BitTorrent as a way to ship out vast amounts of data. A Linux distribution can easily span four CD-ROMs; instead, companies such as Red Hat offer BitTorrent downloads of their work.

Professional BitTorrent?

Professional BitTorrent? 08/31/2004 04:28 AM
A startup, Atzio, is now claiming that they have the first peer-to-peer internet platform for television, apparently ignoring something like BitTorrent. Of course, the technology can basically be described as... BitTorrent with copy protection (how innovative). Plus, they only allow a select group of clients to seed material on the network, making it less likely that people will bother to download the software to make it possible for all this P2P television distribution. The company's own website, amusingly, claims it's having trouble handling all the traffic from the news of their launch -- which might raise some concerns from a company telling the entertainment industry they can handle the distribution of large files in great demand. Still, you have to wonder how effective this sort of solution is. The whole point of their system is you want more people getting and redistributing the content, but then they throw in this copy protection, which is almost laughable considering the system doesn't work if people aren't copying from you while you're copying from others. Besides, if you're a content producer, why bother paying this startup (and I assume they want money) to put your content on their network, when it's easier to just create a torrent, and get it out there -- where a lot more people already have BitTorrent clients.

bittorrent is nice, but...

bittorrent is nice, but... 01/08/2004 08:18 PM

...there's always a 'but' isn't there?

I had attempted to use BitTorrent a couple of times before, but never spent more than a few minutes with it, not enough to understand what was going on. Yesterday night though, I gave it a little more time and some tips from Russ and Matt I could get it going. I had to adjust some settings, such as the bandwidth allocated for uploads, which defaulted at 12 KB/sec and immediately started to suck up my entire upload capability (I set it at 7 KB/sec). I chose a couple of files (three actually) and let it download overnight. This morning, things were well on their way, two files done, the remaining one halfway through. But then it hit me: my transfers are limited!

I have a 4GB transfer limit (as it's common here in Ireland) on my DSL connection. So now I have downloaded, in one day, over 1.5 GB of data, and still have 1 GB to go. Then, there's the uploaded data, which also counts. EEk! By the time the second transfer is finished I will have spent over 75% of my monthly bandwidth allotment. With 60% of the month still to go!

Damn. I want to go back to my good old days of DSL in the Bay Area, where I had a symmetric 768 KB/sec DSL connection, with no transfer limits, at $40 a month. Okay, that's not realistic. :) But on the other hand, until transfer limits are removed (or at least raised) here, I won't be able to do much with BitTorrent. Too bad.

And, btw, this clearly has to have an impact on broadband usage. Forget about BitTorrent specifically, other types of media transfers are also quite heavy, and having that sword hanging over your neck (the sword being whatever they charge per megabyte after you cross the transfer limit) users will be more likely to treat broadband as a kind of always-on modem, rather than as true broadband. Ireland is great, for technology in particular, but it definitely needs some serious improvements to both infrastructure and access to that infrastructure (see my post on mobile handset costs yesterday) to be truly competitive. There's a qualitative jump (both on the supplier and the consumer side of a market) that happens when connectivity is pervasive, always-on, fast, and relatively inexpensive, and Ireland isn't there yet. Here's hoping we won't have to wait much longer.

So, if you had, say, a video of your band performing its hit "Download Me, Baby, and Then Why Doncha Set Me Free?" that you wanted to sell, you'd upload it to Prodigem Marketplace and slap a price on it. Prodigem takes 10% plus the PayPal fee and passes the rest on to you. It's DRM-free once you've downloaded it: It's just a file that you can redistribute as you see fit. And they're contemplating an interesting licensing...
