Phones On Planes

Phones On Planes 07/16/2004 01:59 PM
Well, now that we've got WiFi in the sky, we're getting closer to yakking in the sky as well. A few months back we mentioned the idea of stickin g a cell tower on the plane itself as a way of avoiding that whole messy phone-connecting-to-hundreds-of-cell-towers-on-the-ground thing. Now, American Airlines and Qualcomm have successfully tested just such a solution. Passengers were able to make calls, send text messages and surf the internet from their phones. Of course, if this works out, and 3G wireless networks become more popular, airlines may not even need to worry about setting up internet access on a plane -- people will do it by themselves using their phones. Of course, the test only ran for CDMA phones (it is Qualcomm running the test, after all), but that does raise a question about whether every plane will need to carry such micro-cells from all the major carriers to make this really work. Some may also wonder whether or not airlines will need to create special "quiet zones" (like those found on many train lines) for those who are annoyed at the possibility of sitting next to someone screaming (and with all that background noise, they will be screaming) on their mobile phone for the whole flight.

Storms on the Horizon

It appears that both PEAR and Java continue to swim in stormy waters. In two separate stories:

- Harry Fuecks discusses the pickle over PEAR. IMHO, a small group of people have control over the direction of PEAR. If you like what they are doing, then great. If you don't, you get into these discussions to let off steam.

- James Gosling responds to Java sellout rumors by Sun. However the question as to whether Sun can transform themselves into a more diversified company without imploding remains to be seen.

WiFi + planes = warflying

WiFi + planes = warflying 04/28/2004 06:52 PM
BoingBoing pal, wireless ubergeek, and SoCalWug co-founder Mike Outmesguine says:
I went warflying yesterday with folks from DailyWireless.com, TomsHardware.com, HighspeedLA.com, and CNN. We took off on parallel runways and flew in formation throughout the flight. While the planes were next to each other, we set up an in-flight wireless network and did a videoconferencing session from plane-to-plane. WiFi in the sky! Additionally, we performed a wireless network survey during the flight and found about 4000 access points.

Nasa Wants Robot Planes In Our Skies! 05/20/2004 08:42 PM
USAToday.com has an article about how NASA is working on integrating robot aircraft into the nation's airspace. It could be as early as 2008 that we will have robot planes (UAV drones) routinely sharing civil airspace. Currently there are UAVs flying, but they are mostly restricted to military airspace. Humans and robots in the same airspace surely will require several gentleman's agreements!

The Noisy Cabin: Picocells in Planes

The Noisy Cabin: Picocells in Planes 04/09/2004 03:57 PM
A consortium is working to build an airplane-based cellular picocell technology that supports GSM and Wi-Fi: Cell users with GSM phones would connect via the picocell and calls would be relayed by satellite. Wi-Fi service could also be offered. WirelessCabin (Airbus, Siemens, Ericsson, and others) might have commercial clients by next year. The Economist notes dubiously: Perhaps aircraft will offer "phoning" and "non-phoning" cabins. Still, what better way to drown out the noise of a screaming baby in the next seat than to phone a friend?...
