Copyright Common Sense
03/06/2004 01:58 AMThe Cato Institute's Adam Thierer's makes good sense in
this essay on how to draw lines in the copyright debate.
Key quote:
"But how we call in the cops and who the IP
cops are makes a big difference. In particular, we shouldn’t
expect Congress or regulatory agencies to legislate on every problem
that creeps up or ban or mandate specific technological solutions in
an attempt to solve IP debates. But when certain parties are
egregiously violating the rights of copyright holders, they are
certainly justified in seeking redress in the
courts."

Bellev
ue school bans hats, hoods... In order to curtail
unproven
gang activity, Interlake High School has banned baseball caps, and the
wearing of hoods, stemming from alleged gang involvement on the part
of a few students. The faculty "believes" there to
be gang actvity, and we all know that gangs require hooded-sweatshirt
/ ballcap uniforms, or you're out... Gang members can usually be
singled out due to their poor fashion taste, but it has nothing to do
with how they joined. This must be more of that freedom we North
Americans seems to endorse so much...

Common(s) Sense of Thomas Paine
Common(s) Sense of Thomas Paine
01/11/2004 07:56 AMDavid Richards writes, and evilsite.org
says, that
Thomas Paine assigned the copyright to "Common Sense" to the
Continental Congress. Richards speculates he was the first to do so,
and should thus be a model for Creative Commons.
So at first I thought that was right (the model part; I don't know
enough about the history part). But here's why I don't think so now:
We should distinguish in this debate between altruistic copyright
policy, and reasonable copyright policy. I'm all for altruism, and we
certainly don't have enough out there. But
Creative Commons is not about
altruism; it is about reasonableness. CC says balance, not self-less.
It is trying to find a way to restate what balance there should be "in
the digital world" (how I hate that phrase). Voluntarily, no doubt,
but not self-lessly. Self-lessness, and sainthood, like free and open
source software, have enough models out there. CC is not yet another.

Don’t Make Me Think: A Common Sense
Approach to Web Usability
03/29/2005 08:28 PM
The title of the book is its chief personal design premise. All of
the tips, techniques, and examples presented revolve around users
being able to surf merrily through a well-designed site with minimal
cognitive strain. Readers will quickly come to agree with many of the
book's assumptions, such as "We don't read pages--we scan them" and
"We don't figure out how things work--we muddle through." Coming to
grips with such hard facts sets the stage for Web design that then
produces topnotch sites.
This is the type of book you can blow through in a couple of evenings.
But despite its conciseness, it will give you an expert's ability to
judge Web design.
