Six Apart grows again

Six Apart grows again

Six Apart grows again 07/14/2004 03:25 PM

Six Apart just acquired Loic's blog company, Ublog. Loic had been acting as our marketing partner in Europe, but now he's apart of Six Apart. (Mena has a good story about this.)

Andrew Anker who I met when he was running Hot Wired back in the day has also just joined Six Apart. (More about that on at Mena's Corner)

Last but not least, Barak Berkowitz who was once my boss at Infoseek, then later worked for me at Neoteny, is now taking over the role of CEO of Six Apart. (Mena's story about this)

Welcome aboard everyone. I think we're turning a new page in the development of Six Apart. I urge you to read Mena's posts for her view on all of this. I'm a proud VC today.

We met with the author of Metabase at the International PHP Conference 2001 and we talked about the benefits of having something like Metabase as part of the PEAR project. Shortly afterwards a discussion began once more in the PEAR mailing list about the potential benefits of a merge of PEAR DB and Metabase. After much discussion at my company we decided to take up this task. After several months of hard work we now have the first stable release of MDB. - Lukas Smith Lukas Smith has done a fine job with MDB and finally PEAR has a decent db abstraction library. Congrats! How Google Grows... 03/19/2003 10:24 PM
Fast Company has a wonderfully in-depth article on the the success of Google. Bottom line:
Sidebar: How does Google keep innovating? One big factor is the company's willingness to fail. Google engineers are free to experiment with new features and new services and free to do so in public. The company frequently posts early versions of new features on the site and waits for its users to react.
These are just the themes we asked Google's Craig Silverstein to cover in his upcoming O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference keynote, "G oogle, Innovation, and the Web".

As Airport Wi-Fi Use Grows, So Does
Coordination
06/08/2004 10:23 AM
The Wall Street Journal reports on airports' increased control of the unlicensed airwaves in their confines: This is both an old and new story. Airports started demanding control years ago, but it's a slow boil as existing lease agreements expire and are revised, and as airports start to see the full revenue and logistics potential of having ubiquitous Wi-Fi for passengers, themselves, and their airline and concessionaire tenants. What's most interesting in this piece is that airlines and other airport "customers" are starting to push back, given that Wi-Fi works in an unlicensed band. The writer notes, If an airline's Wi-Fi hardware isn't compatible with an airport-installed network, the carrier would have to buy a whole new system. This isn't quite it: Wi-Fi hardware all works with other Wi-Fi hardware. What she means becomes clear in the next paragraph when talking about UPS, which employs a combination of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi that might not work within all Wi-Fi networks....

Buzz on Voice over Wi-Fi Grows 05/09/2004 03:46 PM
Signs are pointing towards widespread ability to make Voice over IP (VoIP) over Wi-Fi calls: But will revenue follow? Many of the uses of voice over Wi-Fi reduce costs or shift usage; one firm puts revenue in 2009 for long-distance Wi-Fi voice calling at just $20 million, according to the article. But cell phones with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi phones aimed at the home market could drive more rapid adoption. Imagine a single phone that you carried everywhere, but with higher quality and lower cost than a cell phone whether in your house or deep in a convention center. The main problem with a roaming Wi-Fi phone is authentication on networks that require accepting terms at a gateway page, logging in, or paying for use. These are not insurmountable problems....

Technorati has added an astoundingly smart new feature, and BoingBoing is showcasing it. As Cory explains:

"Other blogs commenting on this post" at the bottom of our posts -- this is a link to Technorati's index of all the blogs that have linked to each of Boing Boing's posts. It's not quite a Discuss link, but if you have a blog and you post a comment about one of our posts to it, Technorati will find it and index it."
I'll talk more about this later -- I'm busy with book stuff today -- but let's just say that I can't wait to get this enabled on my blog.
