BusinessWeek Online - Telecommunications deals in Europe are popping up faster than spring flowers. Mobile giant Vodafone Group PLC shelled out $4.4 billion in mid-March to grab wireless companies in Romania and the Czech Republic. Barely two weeks later, the Czech Republic accepted a separate $3.5 billion bid for 51% of fixed-line and mobile operator Cesky Telecom from Spain's Telefonica, which snatched the company away from the expected winner, Swisscom . Now all eyes are on potentially one of the largest European acquisitions of the year -- the battle for Italy's No. ...

RoamAD and Reach fire up city wi-fi

15.04.2004 By PETER GRIFFIN

RoamAD has resurrected plans for a wireless internet network in Auckland's inner city, but this time it will supply only the technology, leaving the service to be run by growing "wi-fi" operator Reach Wireless.

RoamAD has also received a US$100,000 ($155,000) loan from Silicon Valley-based chip maker Intel, a small amount given the multi-billion-dollar investment arsenal of Intel Capital, but an endorsement of RoamAD's technology nevertheless.

Reach Wireless, which is backed by telecoms entrepreneur Chris Jones, will offer wireless internet access in a 3km-square section of the inner city spanning apartment buildings, cafes and offices, using the network built by RoamAD.

Previously the plan had been for RoamAD to run the network itself and seek a partner in a large telco to market and service the network. But no deal eventuated and RoamAD has spent the last year focusing on developing its technology. "RoamAD is an equipment vendor and we need to sell our technology to customers like Reach," said RoamAD chairman Martin Levy.

07/15/2004 04:58 PM
Now Software and Parliant Corp. have announced that the former's Now Up-to-Date & Contact calendar/address book tool and the latter's PhoneValet Message Center are now integrated. The combined solution won a Best of Show award at Macworld Conference & Expo Boston, which wraps up on Thursday. With both applications working together, an incoming call will trigger PhoneValet to show the Caller ID information on your Mac's display while Now Up-to-Date opens that person's record, allowing you to record notes about the conversation and keep track of the number of calls placed by him. The Remote Activity List feature allows you to call your phone, enter a password and have PhoneValet read your day's events from Now Up-to-Date. This fall, Now Software expects to make available integrated dialing, which will automatically call someone when you click the phone icon in their Now Up-to-Date record.
