300 Images From 1800 Sites: This guy went icon shopping at major sites. If you want to know what people are using for a "printer friendly" icon, here's your site.

I roughly estimate that for every six web sites I scoured, I was able to acquire one graphic image. I visited only Fortune 1000 company sites, major online retailers, well known blogs, top advertising, publishing, and design agencies, technology and software industry leaders, and the very largest online news publishers. Approximately 1800 web sites later, I have this collection of 300 of the most interesting, unique, and beautiful formations of pixels to display.

The orange XML icon sucks

The orange XML icon sucks 06/16/2004 01:03 PM

I'm not a fan of the orange XML icon, even though I use it on my categories page. I love the concept of a universally recognised icon for RSS feeds, but XML is simply the wrong acronym to put on it. Don't think it's liable to cause confusion? Check out this excerpt from Journalism.co.uk (emphasis mine):

The Guardian is planning to launch more XML-based services in the next few months, adding to the news feed services the site already provides to both commercial clients and individual readers.

XML, also known as RSS, is a method of streaming information from a website. Many sites now offer a free XML feed enabling readers to receive headlines from news sites via a desktop software program. XML also avoids problems involved with sending email newsletters, such as junk mail and out-of-date addresses.

Doh!

iChat Streaming Icon

iChat Streaming Icon 10/28/2003 11:06 PM
I thought I was imagining it at first. Perhaps it was just the slightly different icon I was noticing. No, come to think of it, Joi Ito was actually moving -- at least his iChat icon was.

iChat Stream Icon streams your mug via iSight or the like as your iChat icon, live to anyone who has the (mis)fortune of having you in their buddy list.

I've always kept my buddy list visible, right there at the right of my desktop. Being virtual, it provides a sense of folks being around--virtual cube-mates, if you will. Now, thanks to the technical know-how of Andreas Pardeike, I can watch them pick their noses, see what they're having for lunch--hopefully not in that order--or just watch them bobbling and jiggling about on my desktop...

...like so many Tamagotchis. All I do is talk to them once a day, send them a file or three every other evening, and respond quickly to their "mornin'"s. Now to send Duncan that Chai; he looks a little drowsy this afternoon ;-).

orange to blue?

Paolo is wondering why Apple went from
orange to blue?
06/29/2004 12:21 PM

I assume that Paolo (by now) realizes that Apple will take standards and change them - just to be different.

It has happened with cables and connectors, browsers and now XML icons. I wonder what is next?

But we all love Apple - right? They're doing our R&D for us!

=========

Here is Paolo's post.....

Among the other news from yesterday's Apple Developers Conference keynote, it's interesting to note that apple picked the blue RSS icon and not the orange XML one to represent RSS (and Atom).

Even if I'm a long time orange icon user and fan, I think I can imagine Apple thinking: "why using an icon with the word 'XML' to link to something we call 'RSS'?". It's true: users are smart, but why making their life harder?

For some time XML icons were popping up everywhere. They linked RSS feeds but also other kind of XML files such as OPML blogrolls (oops, I have just realized that I still have such an icon here) and I do agree that it might have been confusing for users not living in our loop.

It's not that by choosing the blue icon Apple has closed all games but they definetly made a significant step in one direction. Soon we will see if users will start switching to the blue icon. Meanwhile I guess I'll adopt both for my site.

Also, from the demo's I've seen, Safari should solve another issue: users clicking on an RSS icon will not end up watching a page of code anymore but should see a nicely displayed set of posts. Cool.

[Paolo Valdemarin]

Bids partner to sell rare Apple wrist
watches
03/22/2005 04:52 PM

Salem, OR (Blue Moon Bids) March 21, 2005

MacNETv2 is raising funds to buy two Xserve G5 servers. To do so they are parting with three Apple Logo Watches from the 1995 MacWorld Expo. They are in mint condition, never been worn, and have been in safe keeping since they were acquired. The watches are rare and hard to find.

"Before we made the decision to offer these watches for sale to the highest offers we searched all the Apple logo companies to see what they were getting for them. We couldn’t find a single web site offering these watches, and when we searched eBay we found the same thing; no one has them," said the MacNETv2 staff.

7,000 Sources... Or Just A Few
Favorites?
08/02/2004 05:29 PM
For all the hype about how good Google News is for putting together an automated snapshot of the news of the day, an analysis of the front page of Google News found that they seem to rely on just a few sources for all of their main stories. Looking at the "top two" placement spots on Google news, Reuters accounts for 18% of their stories at the top of the list, with the NY Times in second place with 8% of top stories on Google News. Totaled up, the top 5 sources account for an astounding 48% of the top two stories on the front page. The top 10 sources are 66%. Top 25? 83% Top 100 sources covers 98% of the news you see. So, those other 6,900 sources don't seem to get much play. If you go through the other (below the top two results), the situation only improves marginally. The top 100 sources account for 80% of the stories on the front page. There are, of course, many reasons why this would make sense. The top sources are (generally) more reliable and trustworthy. Besides, considering the number of "news" websites out there who only reprint press releases, Reuters, or Associated Press articles, there really aren't that many traditional news sources out there any more. Still, it would be interesting to compare these results to other news aggregation sites. This weekend, for instance, Microsoft admitted that their new Newsbot offering has been designed to favor stories from partner MSNBC (and MSNBC does not appear to make the "top 20" list for Google News). Meanwhile, Topix has relaunched their own news aggregation service (also with 7,000 sources) and a quick glance over the front page there suggests a somewhat wider variety in news sources chosen. So, the question is whether or not this really matters? Does having a wider variety of sources highlighted increase, decrease or not impact the overall quality of the news aggregated?

An update to the earlier story we had on a schoo ls being raided by the FBI for sharing music files, here's the news on a larger FBI operation to shut down a larger software, music and movies warez group. This makes more sense than just going after file sharing, but it still makes you wonder. There is this huge terrorist threat thing going on right now, and you would think that it might make more sense for the FBI to protect us from being blown up than to worry about people sharing music files that they can probably get on file sharing networks anyway.
