Did Microsoft Pay $12.75 Million To
Opera To Settle Interoperability
Problems?
05/24/2004 12:27 PM
Back in 2001, there was a big stink when people realized that anyone visiting MSN with an Opera browser were told that they needed to "upgrad e" their browser to IE in order to view the page. People immediately (and perhaps rightfully so) started accusing Microsoft of unfairly leveraging their monopoly power to shut out a perfectly reasonable (and more standards compliant) Opera browser. Last week, Opera put out a short press release saying that they had received $12.75 million to settle a problem, but didn't indicate from whom. Now, people are starting to say that it was Microsoft, paying off Opera to avoid a lawsuit on the issue - which, to this day, they insist was simply a programming error, and not an attempt to get Opera users to switch to IE.

new lawsuits
03/31/2005 03:24 PM
Microsoft Corp. says it is filing 117 lawsuits against unknown Internet site operators it charged were engaged in "phishing" schemes to obtain personal and financial information from unsuspecting consumers. The "John Doe" defendant lawsuits are to be filed in U.S. District Court in Washington state in an attempt to establish connections between worldwide phishers and discover the largest-volume operators. Officials are also warning consumers to be on the lookout for potential internet scams involving April Fool’s Day on Friday. Some scams are getting more and more sophisticated, some by including what looks like a legitimate Internet address link but once clicked on by the user, they are instead directed to a different, fraudulent site asking for personal information. Consumers are urged to be suspicious of unexpected e-mails seeking personal data, to not click on links in those e-mails, and verify contacts from institutions that claim a person is a victim of identity theft.

Microsoft Monday launched a new advertising campaign designed to extend its "fact based" assault on the Linux operating system. The campaign consists of a two-page advertisement, which was featured in six computer industry trade publications this week, that cites a 2002 IDC study that found that Windows 2000 costs organizations less to operate for a variety of server tasks including networking, security, and file and print serving. "Reams have been written about Windows and Linux," the ad reads, "Let's skip to the bottom line."
