Gigabyte Ignites Intel’s 925XE
Core-Logic
09/03/2004 08:23 AM
Gigabyte Technology, a leading mainboard maker, on Thursday released a statement concerning the introduction of Intel’s i925XE core-logic that aims high-end computers.

The recently released core-logic sets from Intel - i915G, i915P, i925X and derivatives – brought dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM memory, PCI Express x16 and x1 lanes for add-in cards, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 (i915G only), 4 Serial ATA-150, high-definition (Azalia) audio as well as some other important capabilities, such as integrated WLAN or promising RAID technologies.

Intel’s i925X core-logic was said to deliver from 2% to 7% performance increase over systems powered by Intel’s former flagship offering i875P at the same clock-speed of central processing unit. However, even more important performance benefit from the previous generation is likely to be driven not only by silicon innovations, but by pure boost of processor system bus up to 1066MHz, something that will be supported by i925XE.

The Death of the Irish Pub? "The smoking ban is the work of one man, Michael Martin, the Minister for Health and Children, and one of nature's killjoys... He is generally thought to regard the banning of nicotine from Irish pubs as a personal crusade, explaining that he once tried smoking but didn't enjoy it."

The ban was scheduled to start today, but has been delayed until March. It's one thing to have smoking banned in California and New York, but what's the point of pub that's not dark and smoky? And Scotland might be next...

New York Times on the toilet

New York Times on the toilet 04/19/2005 11:04 AM
David Pescovitz: Today's New York Times has an article about the toilet market with a few interesting bits about American Standard's design center:
In one room, 12 toilets are flushing as if under ghostly control; an electronic machine is pulling the virtual levers - and manipulating water temperature and pressure as well. In smaller rooms nearby, one man is alternately flushing cylinders of miso paste, wadded-up paper, and as many as 24 golf balls at a time, while another is inspecting different glazes on ceramic tiles.

Men and machines are testing and retesting the Champion, a low-to-medium priced but technically advanced toilet. American Standard, the world's largest maker of bathroom and kitchen products, has promised consumers that the Champion will never clog.

Toilet Paper Scalability

Toilet Paper Scalability 03/14/2005 06:06 PM

Here's a fun example of why scalability is hard: What problems do you run into by going parallel on your toilet paper dispenser?

Although most homes have only single roll holders, most commercial establishments have long ago switched to devices that hold multiple rolls. We decided to install one, so we purchased holder of two rolls, side by side.

We discovered that although we now had two rolls instead of one, the problem was not solved. Both rolls ran out at the same time. Sure, it took twice as long before the rolls emptied, but we were still stuck with the same problem: no more paper. We had discovered that the switch to two rolls meant we had to use more sophisticated behavior: the algorithm for tearing of paper mattered.

A fun article with a good look into how computer nerds look at the world, but it also hints at actual issues with scalability: More does not automatically equal better.

toto_toilet.jpg imageToto's new "Intelligence Toilet" system brings health measurements only a bathroom away. For mere thousands of dollars, the Intelligence Toilet system will measure urine sugar, blood pressure, body fat and weight on a daily basis. Since there is very little human intervention required, it's almost lazy enough for me to use. The data can be transferred over a home network too, for viewing on your PC. Sony Online Entertainment has announced the next version of Everquest will interface with this as well, so creating an in-game likeness of yourself is as easy as going to the bathroom.
