iPods in Redmond 02/05/2005 09:16 PM

H ide Your IPod, Here Comes Bill: This is pretty funny.

Microsoft's leafy corporate campus in Redmond, Washington, is beginning to look like the streets of New York, London and just about everywhere else: Wherever you go, white headphones dangle from peoples' ears.

To the growing frustration and annoyance of Microsoft's management, Apple Computer's iPod is wildly popular among Microsoft's workers.

[...] So concerned is management, owning an iPod at Microsoft is beginning to become impolitic, the manager said. Employees are hiding their iPods by swapping the telltale white headphones for a less conspicuous pair.

Redmond Idea Factory just ran out of Gas

Redmond Idea Factory just ran out of Gas 07/21/2004 12:38 PM

Dana Blankenhorn raps it out....

Microsoft is out of ideas. (I liked this cartoon of Chairman Bill, from Hawaiian cartoonist John Pritchett.)

Microsoft spent the last year exploring lots of big business ideas. I even pitched Always-On to some Microsoft executives. In the end the company decided it had no worthwhile idea, so it's giving its profit back to shareholders.

Microsoft brings in $1 billion worth of free cash every month, and has set a $75 billion pay-out plan, including $30 billion in share buybacks. This is all in an effort to raise its stagnant stock price.

The result will be a higher price, but I guarantee you it will also mean a lower price-earnings ratio. Microsoft has decided to become a widows-and-orphans stock because it can't see any worthwhile way to invest its profits.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Because if Microsoft, with all the money in the world, can't thnk of anything better to do with its money than give it away, what does that say for the rest of us? What does it say for the technology business climate?

[Moore's Lore]

Sad - but true. It's up to US to prove Dana wrong!

Big WLAN on Campus 01/06/2005 03:14 PM
Colleges are the bleeding edge of WLAN technology: I wrote this piece for Mobile Pipeline (my first for them) which started out as a more general best practices article for giant WLANs, and morphed into an article about college WLANs. Why? As I explain in the story, giant WLAN enterprises don't want to talk on or off the record about what they're doing. Academic institutions are happy to oblige. Schools also have the disadvantage of having to support many, many generations of equipment and operating systems. You can't tell a professor to take a flying leap, and some schools may still have five-year-old laptops and desktops that still have to be integrated. It's clear that 802.1X is the next big trend for both schools and enterprises. It solves many problems while adding tremendous policy flexibility. Using 802.1X and L2TP means that you can have smaller VLANs that are segregated by policy, group, or even randomly to balance users among VLANs....

The expansion of one legendary Northwest company portends the decline of another. Microsoft has offered to buy the longtime Redmond headquarters of outdoor-clothing retailer Eddie Bauer for $38 million, court records show. The software giant last week filed a petition with U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York to purchase the land Eddie Bauer originally occupied more than three decades ago. The 20-acre tract, just west of Highway 520, is adjacent to Microsoft's main campus and surrounded by its other buildings.
