German company RapidSolution Software has released the Windows software Tunebite. Music tracks purchased from the Internet are copy-protected and involve important restrictions for many users when they are played back. With the option to re-record them while they are played, Tunebite legally provides the user with new music files without restrictions. This ensures that music bought from Apple iTunes, Sony Connect, AOL or other music platforms in the Internet can be played back and listened to from everywhere. [PRWEB Sep 13, 2004]

How To Lose The WiFi Market: Forget That
Competition Exists

How To Lose The WiFi Market: Forget That
Competition Exists
08/27/2004 02:00 PM
Agere, a spinoff of Lucent (itself a spinoff of AT&T), helped define and create the WiFi market, but now holds a fairly small portion of the market, and is the number five seller of WiFi chips. In taking a look at how Agere "lost" the WiFi market, it simply appears that they weren't ready for competition from plenty of other companies -- including a company with a lot more money: Intel. While the article makes some suggestions (confusion after spinning off their WiFi product business to focus on just chips, taking their eye off the ball to focus on not going bankrupt), the more realistic explanation simply seems to be that they didn't expect as much competition in the marketplace as they received. If anything, it sounds like, by "inventing" the market, they expected to keep it forever. They also seem particularly miffed at Intel's marketing campaign to co-opt WiFi into their Centrino brand -- leading many people to believe that Intel created WiFi. When you're blaming your competitor's ability to outmarket you as the reason you lost a market (especially when it's an emerging market), it suggests the company simply wasn't prepared to compete at all.

wmp10_ss.jpg imageCNet, among other places, is reporting that Microsoft is releasing a beta version of Windows Media Player 10 for public testing. Although leaked copies of the software have been available for the last week or so, the official release will allow everyone a chance to play with the new features, such as enhanced synchronization methods that keep some of the newer, more full-featured media players full of not only audio, but video and pictures, as well. And from this screenshot, it appears that Microsoft is adopting the Rip and Burn terminology that pretty much everyone else does. I've resisted upgrading even to 9, so far, and will probably refrain from 10, as well. I only use it to play movies, and I'm finding myself using Media Player Classic more and more.

Beatles May Get Their Own Music Download

Beatles May Get Their Own Music Download
Store
06/08/2004 05:12 PM
People have pointed out in the past that one of the major limitations to online download music stores is the fact that certain popular artists have not allowed their music to be (legally) offered online yet. Exhibit number one is always the Beatles. Well, now it appears that the Beatles are finally warming up to the idea, but only if someone is willing to pay them lots and lots and lots of money for the right to set up an exclusive Beatles store. That's right, the music wouldn't be available in just any download store, but a Beatles-only music store that would be run by some other company. While the article mentions Apple iTunes as a possibility, this seems unlikely unless the Beatles and Apple patch up their legal problems first. Either way, this points out just how ridiculous all these different online stores are. Would the Beatles have ever become famous if you could only buy their music in exclusive Beatles-only record stores, which would then only play on special Beatles-only record players, that had all sorts of limitations on what you could do compared to other music you owned? The Beatles may have been great musicians, but they now appear to be greedy and shortsighted in their attempt to move into the online world.
