Google Ethics Committee 05/18/2004 04:38 PM
Ido Kenan, NRG Maariv has filed a story about Google's ethics committee. He sent us this translation: Google has an ethics committee for decisions on changes to their algorithms. The committee is comprised of Google workers "who are concerned about ethics", said Dr. Eran Gabber, a software engineer with Google, at a lecture yesterday (Monday) at the Tel Aviv University. Dr. Gabber came to Israel to recruit Computer Science students for an annual Google project, where 100 students from around the world are invited to work at Google for a 12-week period during the summer. Dr. Gabber said: "We change Pagerank when we find that spammers are abusing it, but we don't change it often. There's an internal ethics committee in Google. Internally, there are people who are concerned about ethics. In Google, there are a lot of people who find ethics important". There are photos at the original article (in Hebrew). Thanks again to Ido Kenan, NRG Maariv for this story....

Trademark smackdown: US Olympics
Committee v. Robolympics
12/15/2003 03:13 PM
The United States Olympic Committee says it and it alone can use the word "olympics" to describe an athletic competition, which miffs the organizers of the Robolympics. I filed a story about the copyright conflict between bot-builders and the USOC for Wired News here.
"The last time I checked, the USOC wasn't hosting robot sumo events," said Calkins. "Common sense dictates that no one would confuse a 6-pound hunk of steel and plastic with Picabo Street, nor would this dilute her image or in any way disrespect her accomplishments. "We won't compete against them in the 50-yard dash, so I don't see why they won't help us to create an aptly named forum for competing in robotic line-following or robot firefighting," he said.

ICANN Board Governance Committee update

ICANN Board Governance Committee update 04/07/2005 03:57 PM

There has been a great deal of discussion about the Board Governance Committee's draft of the Core Principles and Corporate Governance Guidelines. Section 5(e) says "Having given the chief executive delegated authority, Board members should be careful – individually and collectively – not to undermine it by word or action." The idea behind this is that the board should not be undermining the activity of the CEO after it has delegated a task. As a CEO, I can understand this intention, but I believe that it should be decided operationally and should not be in a guidelines document to be signed by the board. In addition, I think the word "undermine" is vague. In many ways, the role of the board is to "undermine" management if management is not doing the right thing.

During the public forum (which is going on right now), Alejandro Pisanty, the chair of the committee, pointed out that there were a number of comments and that the committee is working on revising the draft. If you have comments, I suggest you submit them through the link above. There were a number of constructive comments from other participants during the forum and they will be posted on the site soon.

Database protection approved by US
Congressional committee
10/29/2003 12:11 AM

The United States House Judiciary Committee 's Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet and Intellectual Property approved a measure extending copyright protection to databases.

Databases have usually been held to be primarly facts, and hence uncovered by copyright . Congress considered changing coverage to account for the increasing creativity and investment involved in modern databases.
