Tiger Envelopes makes cryptography work with almost any email software. It is a personal mail proxy server with automatic encryption. Tiger uses SMTP and POP3 to work with almost any mail client, crypto plugins to work with almost any type of cryptography, and Java to run on almost any operating system. Plugins for Bouncy Castle, GPG, and PGP are included.
Changes:
This release automatically exchanges keys peer-to-peer. When both people are using Tiger Envelopes, one unencrypted email message is all it takes. After that, every message in either direction is encrypted automatically. You should verify keys by checking the key fingerprints through a separate channel, such as face to face or by telephone.

Bad Netflix envelopes

Bad Netflix envelopes 02/01/2005 09:33 PM
I thought it was just me not opening them carefully enough over the last week or two, but apparently not. The internet is great. I wonder if Netflix appreciates how great the Hacking Netflix site is for them even if it's also writing about the Bad Stuff. You'd think it'd be really old news by now, but maybe not. (Actually, knowing other corporations a bit from the inside I'd say certainly not ... sigh)...

What's with the green Netflix envelopes? Hacking Netflix thinks it's because of the Shrek 2 promotion, but it's not just Shrek Green, it's Bright Neon Green. In related news, they have been hideously slow receiving and shipping movies in their Santa Ana distribution center lately. Movies are taking 2-3 days to be received there and ~2 days to get here where it used to be 1-2 days for them to receive it and 1 day for us to get it....

Eye of the Tiger

Eye of the Tiger 03/13/2003 12:53 PM

focustrainer.jpgIf you really need to have that extra edge when you play, there's a bizarre new "Focus Trainer" from SportsLink that's supposed to improve concentration and focus before atheletic activity and really get you into "The Zone". It sounds more like a trip to the Laserium if you ask us:

First, find a nice quiet place where you won't be bothered. Put the glasses and headphones on and pick a session. You can choose from 15 of them, ranging from "relaxed calmness" to "anxiety release." Press Start and wait. After a 10-second countdown, you hear a weird noise like a soothing low feedback. It gets louder and then softer, stunted a bit and then drawn out. Then the lights kick in. There are six small, flashing lights that blink furiously on the top rim of the glasses. Shut your eyes, take some deep breaths, and the effect is really strange.

Tiger Previewed

Tiger Previewed 06/28/2004 04:31 PM
Steve Jobs has been previewing some of the key features of Tiger at the WWDC in San Francisco. All the new stuff is on the Apple website, but here’s a diluted list :
  • iChat AV — updated to include multi-way AV conferencing (with a funky 3D interface).
  • Safari RSS — an updated version of Safari to allow reading and management of RSS feeds.
  • Dashboard — open & manage Konfabulator-style widgets
  • Spotlight — super-fast global search facility. Search through your contacts, iCal diaries and email as well as files.
  • Automator — create and deploy actions to perform common routines (in a great looking interface too).
  • Xcode 2.0 — updated version of Apple’s IDE (with visual modelling and improved Java support).
  • VoiceOver — the much heralded Spoken Interface. A system-wide feature which makes Tiger the most accessible OS available.
Sounds great, but I may save the cash and put it towards one of those gargantuan 30-inch Studio Displays

First impressions of Tiger...

First impressions of Tiger... 06/28/2004 04:31 PM

A few first impressions of Apple's upcoming Operating System: Tiger:

  • Spotlight - basically an Apple native verstion of Launchbar with a few self-evidently nice features (searching Mail). After using Launchbar for a while I can state without question that it feels like part of the OS after a while, so if the Apple version has the similar ability to run it without using the mouse, then I'll be pretty happy. I doubt Objective Development will be, of course...
  • iChat AV - the new version allows you to conference call ten people and video chat with loads of people too. That's pretty cool. I'm pretty bloody impressed by that. It's going to be pretty awesome and totally what I've been hoping they'd do. It fits in really well with some other thinking I've been doing...
  • Safari RSS - sites with RSS feeds are marked when you go to them, which is cool, and then you can subscribe to them directly through the interface. I'm not convinced by their interaction design here - I suspect I'll keep using NetNewsWire for the time being - but it's certainly a positive step that can't help but make RSS penetration...
  • Dashboard - basically this one is a fucking rip off of Konfabulator and I'm pretty pissed off about it. I'm not a particular fan of the paradigm, but I don't think that's pertinent - unlike RSS feeds and the Launchbar knock-off there doesn't seem to me to be really any reason for building this into the OS, it's not particularly interesting or powerful and it really does seem just like nicking someone else's ideas and lobbing them into your Operating System because you can. Harsh, Steve. Harsh...
  • Automator - as far as I can tell this is a GUI for AppleScript, allowing people like me who get scared by even the simplest of scripting languages to automate tasks quickly and easily without ending up dribbling into a cup. My personal jury is out on how useful it'll actually be on a day-to-day basis but that doesn't mean that I'm not impressed. AppleScript for the rest of us?
  • VoiceOver - a spoken interface for the Mac. I'm not really qualified to comment on the technology, but certainly the aspiration is good and important and I don't doubt it'll serve Apple well in cracking governmental markets. My only quibble - I'm not so impressed by the little white man they made in Illustrator to put in the logo. He looks a bit lame and ... bendy ...
  • .Mac sync - a revised version of iSync with a simpler UI and apparently some developer hooks. It still pisses me off that you have to have a .Mac account to do any syncing across the internet. I can't quite believe that function is worth the $60 a year, nor do I think it's even vaguely conceivable that you couldn't explain to someone how to set up a server to handle that stuff themselves... Seems like a slightly shitty attempt to drill money out of you in an entirely random way...
  • Better Unix - neat! I think!
  • XCode 2.0 - wish I understood it!
  • System Wide Metadata Indexing - this is seriously cool and API'd up the wazoo so hopefully it will start to lay the foundations of the Finder technologies of the future...

All in all the big news for the operating system is the integration of search and metadata technologies into the heart of the Operating System. The Safari RSS and iChat AV stuff is pretty cool too and everything else looks like tweaks, gimmicks or outright rip-offs. I wonder when it's out?

Tiger: First Impressions

Tiger: First Impressions 08/27/2004 02:02 PM
Details about Tiger are still emerging, but a majority of the participants in the Macworld Reader Panel like what they've seen of the next major update to OS X so far. Three weeks after Apple offered a first look at Tiger during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), market-research firm Karlin Associates surveyed 3,634 Macworld readers to gauge their reaction to the OS X update. Here's what they had to say.

Tiger 150, Longhorn 0

Tiger 150, Longhorn 0 08/29/2004 10:56 AM
When Steve Jobs took the stage at the Worldwide Developers Conference and unveiled the next version of OS X, Tiger, comparisons were quick to be drawn to Microsoft's Longhorn — some by Apple itself with a few strategically-placed banners. At the time, Longhorn was still packed with the promise of a better search engine, one that seemed to even put Panther’s superior engine to shame. But then Steve demoed Spotlight, and all fears were put to rest. Set to launch in the first half of 2005, Tiger continues to pile on the features, while Longhorn, now looking at a <A HREF="http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=569&ncid=73 8&e=3&u=/nm/20040828/tc_nm/tech_microsoft_windows_dc">2006< /A> target date, is trimming its own. "We've had to make some trade-offs to deliver the features corporate customers, consumers and OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) are asking for in a reasonable time frame," said Microsoft group vice president Jim Allchin. Apparently, five years just isn't enough time to properly overhaul an OS. "In developing software, somewhere you have to put a stake in the ground and there's often some hard trade-offs you have to make," said Michael Cherry, a analyst with Directions on Microsoft, an independent researcher based in Kirkland, Washington. The Windows File System, or WinFS for short, is — or rather, was — "the active storage subsystem in Longhorn that is used for searching, organizing, and sharing data. WinFS maintains a store of items and their properties, and provides a system service in Longhorn to retrieve information when it's needed." However a <A HREF="http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/winfs/default.aspx?pull=/lib rary/en-us/dnaero/html/wux_topic_storage.asp">note</A> on the Microsoft Web site reads, "In spite of what may be stated in this content, WinFS is not a feature that will come with the Longhorn Operating System. However, WinFS will be available on the Windows platform at some future date, which is why this article continues to be provided for your information"

Tiger Knows How to Hunt 07/01/2004 10:20 AM
“Besides some under-the-hood improvements, including better graphics and video performance, Tiger has innovations that could change the way people interact with their computers,” writes BusinessWeek’s Peter Burrows. “The most exciting is a new search capability, called Spotlight, for quickly finding and categorizing information on the hard drive.” [Jul 1]
