Tony Perkins at AlwaysOn is writing a book online about Google, soliciting ideas, information and comments from readers: The goal is to finish the book in the next 60 days, speed-produce it, and get it to market before the Google IPO, to complement the company's red herring prospectus. Interesting project....

In what I'm sure will become a heavily linked to article, Tristan Louis offers up his recent analysis. I haven't had time to digest it fully, but his conclusions are: Yahoo! generally does a better job at indexing the blogosphere than Google does. We know they have been working hard to improve their index and here's proof that they are getting results Even if Google is the one with the motto about not doing evil, Yahoo! seems to be the...

Morgan Freeman To Release Next Film

Morgan Freeman To Release Next Film
Online
01/08/2004 08:40 PM
In an announcement that is sure to get plenty of attention, actor Morgan Freeman announced (along with Intel) that his production company will be simul taneously releasing his next movie in theaters and online. Of course, they don't explain how they intend to do this, what technology they'll use or how much they're going to charge. Still, should be an interesting experiment. I'd be interested to see if they provide any sort of incentive to try to get people to go see the movie in the theater, instead of just downloading it.

Google Book

Google Book 06/16/2002 11:50 AM
via Rael Dornfest we learn that Tara Calishan is writing a book on Google: As most of you know, I write stuff. And soon I'll be helping put together a book on search engines. Now that the Google API has been released, books on search engines are much more than "use this search technique" (though those are important too.) Now people can put programs together that do Cool Search Things. If you know of a cool Google technique -- an interesting use of the API, a search trick you think is nifty -- send it in. (I already know about Googlewhacks, Googlematic, Google Smackdown, and Google results by e-mail!) ALSO, if you have a GOOGLE WISH -- the thought, "Wow, I wish I could do X with Google," send that in too. I might be able to help make your Google Wish come true!Aww, I wanted to write that book. Anyway, keep sending in your cool Google tools, techniques and wishes. Thanks!

How hard is it to put a book online,
legally?

How hard is it to put a book online,
legally?

Sometimes people ask us why we created the Creative Commons, and we often say that we wanted there to be an easy way for you to share your creations and also to build a large pool of creative work that is easy to redistribute, print, (and if the license allows) collage, remix, or even sell to others.

If you're wondering what the world without Creative Commons is like, check out this helpful primer on the question "How Can I Tell Whether a Book Can Go Online?" The answer, as you can see, is quite complicated, including the various laws around the world. The page doesn't mention CC, but if it did, one of the top bullets would be "look for a Creative Commons mark" and the permission and legal questions that take up the rest of the page would be solved.

Google and Search Inside the Book

Google and Search Inside the Book 10/30/2003 10:22 AM
You probably know by now that Amazon has released the first of its A9 search offerings: Search Inside the Book. (If you don't, basically when you search on Amazon it searches the full text of thousands of books, and points you not only to the book, but to scanned copies of all the pages that match your search.) So what should Google do? This is a perfect time to cut a deal with Amazon: Amazon lets them index the text of all these books, and in return, Google sends tons of customers to Amazon's door. Putting the books in the search results wouldn't be any different than the search results already provided by Amazon, so there wouldn't be any copyright or lost-sales problems. Despite the amazingness of the Web, there's still some stuff you can find only in books. Google wouldn't be living up to their mission (to organize all the world's information) if they passed up this amazing opportunity....
