Stacy Holland is a California-based executive recruiter who specializes in finding people with Linux-related skills. Her business card has her photo at the top, and beneath her photo it says, "The Linux Lady." She started working with Linux people (and using Linux) in 1999, and decided to concentrate on Linux because, she says, "It's a very exciting, close-knit family of technically-motivated, interesting people." This doesn't mean every NewsForge reader should immediately send Stacy a resume. She only recruits management types. But she has plenty of career advice for coders (and others) who want to become top management, along with tips on how to ride the waves of today's shifting IT job market.

No Channels, But Plenty To Watch

No Channels, But Plenty To Watch 07/02/2004 06:02 PM
For years, the joke has been that we kept getting more television channels, but there was consistently less on TV. It used to be that the idea of having 100 channels was amazing, but now people have a few hundred channels to choose from on many TV systems. However, the latest report from Nielsen says that, for the first time ever, the average number of channels available has dropped. TV execs are freaking out and want a recount. Some are blaming things like TiVos for the mess, but Ernest Miller (at the link above) makes the argument that the concept of "channels" is going away thanks to the internet. People don't want more "channels" -- they want more interactivity and control, and you just don't find that with TV these days.

Plenty Of Identity Theft Going Around

Plenty Of Identity Theft Going Around 01/22/2004 02:06 PM
The FTC has put out their list of what people were complaining to them about, and it seems that identity theft tops the list for the fourth straight year - with 42% of complaints concerning the crime (up from 40% the year before). What's most interesting to me about this, though, is that despite all this identity theft, we still haven't done much to prevent it. It still seems like most lawmakers and authorities don't see it as a serious problem.

Two careers, two kids, plenty of time

Two careers, two kids, plenty of time 02/10/2004 02:44 AM

A Panamanian-American couple invited me over to dinner at their house the other night.  They are both well-educated and have excellent careers.  Their girls are 8 and 9.  I walked in the door to find an impeccably neat household.  No toys cluttering the floor.  Both husband and wife were relaxed and happy to chat.  Eventually an excellent meal appeared, cooked and served by one of two live-in nannies.  The dishes disappeared and the kids came into the room to hang out with the parents.

By dessert I'd figured out what was wrong with the picture.  These people had as much free time and energy to socialize as single childless Americans.  My American friends who are married with children are capable of straightening up the house and entertaining at home perhaps once every two months.  These upper middle-class Panamanians could do that every night if they wished.  Americans with kids are exhausted by the effort of driving them around and reshuffling the clutter.  Panamanians have their chauffeur do the chauffeuring.

All of the magic (two nannies and a full-time driver) happens for $1000/month.  A perfectly lovely house in a nice area can be had for $250,000.

Plenty Of Legal Downloadable Music Now

Plenty Of Legal Downloadable Music Now 05/27/2004 12:11 PM
For a totally arbitrary, but supposedly "symbolic" milestone, the global music industry is celebrating that there are now over 100 legal music services available. Don't ask what kind of sites make it to the list, that's not the important part. The important part is that now music lovers have more music formats to choose from than ever. Woo hoo! So instead of making it easier for people to download music in a simple, transferable format, we now have a bunch of different formats that we have to track down from over 100 sources. Sounds like progress to me.

FTC Legalizes Porn Spam - Expect Plenty

FTC Legalizes Porn Spam - Expect Plenty 04/13/2004 02:10 PM
The latest move by our government to legitimize spam by simply adding rules that tell you how to spam properly, is this decision by the FTC that all porn spam must be labeled to say "SEXUALLY-EXPLICIT" (capital screaming required?). Also, such spam cannot contain "graphic material." In other words, porn spammers have just been told it's okay to spam. This should pretty much guarantee that we all start receiving a lot more pornographic spam - though, easily labeled so that anyone glancing over your shoulder (assuming you don't use filters) to check out your inbox will immediately see "SEXUALLY-EXPLICIT" everywhere. I'm a bit surprised they're doing this, considering the recent ridiculous crackdown on "indecency." Not that I have a problem with anyone viewing whatever porn they want - but it should be their choice, and not forced upon them by spammers.
