AirMagnet Rolls Out Upgrades

AirMagnet Rolls Out Upgrades 07/14/2004 01:22 PM

AirMagnet is introducing a new version of its portable analysis products, designed for laptop or PDA users: The upgrade is free to existing customers. The new version extends the new look and functionality of AirMagnet's distributed product that it released earlier in the year. The tool includes 19 new alarms, including one that detects a denial of service attack recently identified by researchers in Queensland. That attack made headlines when it was first uncovered but AirMagnet hasn't seen or heard of any such attacks in the market. Still, customers asked for protection against it. "One reason we hopped on this so quickly was that the press picked up on this aggressively and our customers called to say they'd like an alarm for it," said Rich Mironov, vice president of marketing for AirMagnet. The new product also supports various authentication and encryption schemes. The software appears to the network like a client that can be running WEP, Cisco's LEAP, Microsoft's PEAP, TLS, or Cisco's latest, EAP Fast. Mironov said it's important for network administrators to have a tool that can support the method their network uses because often other tools will shut off security to do the diagnosis but problems could stem from the security mechanisms themselves. The tool also offers some network monitoring capabilities for customers who may be running voice over WLAN. It depicts the signal strength of each packet, so a flat line indicates that a call will be delivering good voice quality but a jittery line indicates interference. Other tools can then help administrators figure out where the interference is coming from to correct the problem. The tool can also monitor how long handoff takes between cells, which will indicate if calls are being dropped as users move. Additional security diagnosis capabilities specifically for voice over WLAN will be available in future upgrades, Mironov said....

AirMagnet Beefs Up Monitoring

AirMagnet Beefs Up Monitoring 03/08/2004 11:15 PM
AirMagnet is introducing a new version of its distributed WLAN monitoring platform: The updated platform includes a completely new user interface, new rogue detection blocking and tracing, and policy management features. AirMagnet customers place sensors throughout their WLAN network which sniff the air for unauthorized APs. From a central console, network administrators can view every AP in the network, including those in remote offices that may be around the globe. In the previous version of the product, the sensors could only identify rogue APs when their MAC address wasn't authorized. Now, the sensors can identify rogues based on manufacturer, MAC address, and SSID. If a rogue AP is found, it can be remotely disabled essentially by jamming it. "But that doesn't pull its socket out of the wall which is what you want to do," said Rich Mironov, vice president of marketing for AirMagnet. Administrators can set how they'd like to be notified if a rogue is detected, including via a pager, and then they can go to the location of the rogue and physically disconnect it. Users can also identify APs that might be in range of a sensor as a neighbor AP. The feature would be useful for companies located in office buildings where a nearby company may also have a WLAN with signals that bleed into the next door office. Once an AP is set as a neighbor's, the AirMagnet sensors won't send alarms based on its settings. The sensors also flag APs that use the manufacturer's default password. Using the manufacturer's password is a security vulnerability because anyone could find out what that password is and use it. The AirMagnet sensors can also be set to monitor security policies, which may differ from AP to AP. Any time those security policies are breached, the sensors alert the administrator. Mironov stresses that the platform doesn't just identify issues. "It's a network overlay to diagnose problems and tell users what to do," he said. For example, when the sensors find an AP using the manufacturer's password, the software describes to the administrator why that's a problem and recommends that the administrator change the password. AirMagnet's platform is often criticized by the new WLAN switch vendors because AirMagnet requires customers to deploy a separate network of sensors to monitor the air. "I agree in principle that the monitoring should be built in," said Mironov. Ultimately, he hopes that an...

Why I'll never be a fast runner

Why I'll never be a fast runner 08/11/2004 10:24 AM
An interesting article in the New York Times yesterday examines Why Joggers Labor and Olympians Fly. Apparently elite atheletes (like we know from cyclist Lance Armstrong) possess physiological traits that "normal" people don't have, such as larger hearts. Exercise physiologists say there are three components to great running: A high VO2 max, the volume of oxygen an athlete can consume at maximum exertion; great running efficiency, a measurement of the energy used to run at a particular pace; and an ability to keep going at a high level of exertion for a long time, expressed as the percentage of VO2 max that can be sustained during a run. Some day I'd like to get my VO2 max measured. Meanwhile, my marathon training has been progressing quite well, or it was until yesterday when I was running in the woods, took my mind off the trail, and started thinking about the interval training I was going to do after I warmed up. Then I tripped on a root and went non-Olympian flying through the air, bonking my knee as I skidded along the pine needled floor of the forest. No interval training after that, just a slow jog back home and a day of icing the knee. I guess I'm still in the "Joggers Labor" phase of my running career.
