Don’t Make Me Think: A Common Sense
Approach to Web Usability
Don’t Make Me Think: A Common Sense
Approach to Web Usability
03/29/2005 08:28 PM
The title of the book is its chief personal design premise. All of
the tips, techniques, and examples presented revolve around users
being able to surf merrily through a well-designed site with minimal
cognitive strain. Readers will quickly come to agree with many of the
book's assumptions, such as "We don't read pages--we scan them" and
"We don't figure out how things work--we muddle through." Coming to
grips with such hard facts sets the stage for Web design that then
produces topnotch sites.
This is the type of book you can blow through in a couple of evenings.
But despite its conciseness, it will give you an expert's ability to
judge Web design.

public transit and pricey parking, I said goodbye to auto repair
bills, insurance premiums and gas pumps. Recently divorced, without
kids to ferry around, I realized my dream of living car-free.

Being Kind to Software Developers or
"Why Make Extra Email for Yourself?"
11/16/2002 10:08 AMBeing Kind to Software Developers or "Why Make Extra Email for
Yourself?"
I was just over on PHP Everywhere where I saw that Enygma, the person
behind PHPDeveloper just lost his job. That just sucks. I don't know
Enygma personally but I know just how hard it is to be out of work.
And these days it's even harder. So best of luck to Enygma.
(Suggestion to Enygma, link to a resume of yourself next time from
your blog so people can see who you are and what you could do for
them).
Anyway I saw that Enygma just linked to an article on parsing RSS with
PHP. That's obviously cool. So I went to check it out and NOWHERE in
the article could I find a link to the entire code. NOWHERE. That
just plain cruel. Every programming language has novices. Every
language. What they did was write the article so you could put it
together i.e. a subhead was "Function ParseRSS" and then a paragraph
and then the code but that's, to me at least, mind bogglingly dumb.
All this does is this:
Make everyone have to work harder to use their code
Cause novice developers to get confused
It will almost certainly lead to one or more unwanted bugs from people
that put it together wrong
Lead to rants like this
Cause the author to get more than usual emails from people saying "In
this article I did X but it didn't work"
So people, if you are going to write a programming article, just toss
in a link to the full source code. Take a look at thsi article where
I not only did it but also told you how to use php's source coloring
function. [ Go ] It doesn't matter what language you are working in,
having a link to the full code is always the right thing to do.
BE KIND TO SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS !
Disclaimer: Today's early morning bitchy post was brought to you
courtesy of a) lack of sleep b) a really bad week c) stupidity on the
part of Zend in publishing articles this way; what were they thinking?
And if they've done it this way forever then more shame on them

Easy Come, Easy Go: Antigua Loses To US
Over Gambling
04/07/2005 05:39 PMAntigua has been battling the US for some time over the US's ban on
online gambling. For many years, Antigua-based online casinos
have
run into problems with US laws. Two years ago, they went to the
WTO claiming that the US ban on online gambling was
a
violation of a fair trade agreement the two nations had signed.
It took the WTO almost exactly one year to point out that
Antig
ua was probably right. Of course, that wasn't acceptable for
politicians who seem to think gambling is pure evil (except, of
course, when it contributes to local tax coffers) -- so, while they
planned to ignore the ruling completely (we're the US, we don't follow
international rulings unless we agree with them), they did file an
appeal, just for fun. It turns out that appeal worked, and the WTO
has changed its mind, saying that
banning
gambling is a "moral issue," and therefore not subject to the fair
trade agreement the two nations signed. So, sorry for all you online
gambling addicts in the US, but you're back to breaking the law again.

12/19/2003 11:33 AMBoth drives do a fine job of simplifying backup and providing external

Maxtor's cheaper and quieter drive is better for people who want extra
disk space and more backup flexibility. By Adam Engst (Macworld via
