Camedia C-310 Zoom, the 3.2-megapixel budget camera from Olympus with
the fantasy weaponry styling. It lacks on a lot of tweaker features,
like mirrored finished, nasal spray, and ... wait, like ISO speed or
aperture settings, but as a down-and-dirty point-and-shoot, the C-310
gets the job done, providing more than adequate image quality without
breaking the bank -- the C-310Zoom (which is branded the D-575 in the
States) can be picked up for around $250.

Perfect for the casual
CIA operative or dolphin trainer, the Olympus R1000 is a truly rugged
"tough" digital assistant, as MobileMag's review clearly shows. The
device offers enhanced security along with the ability to take nearly
anything you throw at it (including other R1000s). Surviving
submersions in tanks of water, 8 hours of "agitation" with dust and
drops from more than 6 feet, the device is available in either Linux
Qtopia or CE .NET and will cost you between $900 and $1100, depending
on your wireless options. (Bluetooth vs. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.)
Available now, check MoblieMag's review for all the rugged
details.

Mark Goldstein is collecting himself a nice set of
reviews over at PhotographyBlog, and his review of the Olympus 410
Digital camera stays true to form. The 4-megapixel camera that tops
Olympus's "Stylish" category has a 3x optical zoom, uses xD Picture
Card format, and looks not unlike the sort of camera I would expect to
see some sci-fi alien family use on vacation. Not Klingon, exactly;
perhaps the Protoss.
Mark also informs me that the European name of this camera is the
µ[mju:], which best I can work out is pronounced,
"microbracketmuujuuucolonbracket." Fancy!

Built to withstand the hottest lava flows (or at least
being placed in a Humvee's tire tracks for a press photo), Olympus has
announced the world's first "Tough Digital Assistant". Configurable in
both milquetoast Win CE.Net 4.2 or the hairy, bearded Linux option, it
can also include both Bluetooth and 802.11b, if you chose, ruggedly
transmitting radio waves capable of traversing the rockiest
electromagnetic spectrum. They claim it can withstand a four-foot
drop onto concrete, but strangely can't withstand concrete dropped
from four feet above it (probably; they won't let us try).
It's nice looking, though, especially in a category otherwise
filled with knobby plastic chassis (with horrible gas mileage).

Olympus
is offering two new colors of their m:robe MR-100 MP3
player—sort of. The front of the device is still the
Knight-Rider-like red-on-black (of which, I must say, I am a
fan). The back of the current models is white, but the new models will
be available with backs in light pink and light blue. It's like those
videos I used to stare at when I was a kid, where the cover girl was a
studious bookworm by day but a crime-fighting whore at night. I may be
getting some of the plot-points confused.
No idea if we'll get these models in America. I guess it depends on
how well the MR-100 is selling, which is hard to augur considering
Olympus misguidedly put all their marketting muscle into the
MR-500.

09/01/2004 12:01 PMViperLair reviews the ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0, a sort of
low-rent option for those you want to add a TV tuner or video-in to
their machines, but would prefer an outboard piece of equipment
instead of cracking open their case and dropping in a daughter board.
Don't expect huge features out of the $100 brick, though, as the
inputs are limited to coax, s-video, and composite - the
higher-quality component video is not to be found. On the upside, the
inclusion of USB 2.0 in this new model allows it to transfer encoded
video to your computer with far less compression than earlier, USB 1.1
models, meaning your signal will travel from outside to your hard
drive relatively unscathed, analog warts and all.
For a quick solution, especially for something like a laptop that
can't even get a better quality bit of hardware, it's probably worth
taking a look at. A "Pro" version should be out soon that includes a
remote.

There's no doubt that the Sharp LL-151-3D is a cool
product—3D displays without any goofy headgear is the double
pluses. But are any of you guys actually using them? I can think of a
few situations (medical, 3D imaging) where they'd be handy, but the
15-inch size seems a little down market for hot-to-trot medical
researchers/Science Officers. And it's too expensive for gaming,
costing more than most gaming PCs do in total. Anyway, just curious.
There's got to be a way I can justify buying one for work.

Although the review is a little heavy on pictures and a little light

Neuros II Reviewed
08/20/2004 12:50 PM
The Register has a properly in-depth review of the
Neuros II 20GB HDD music player, a bulky and sort of awkward device
whose main claim to fame is swappable 'backpacks' that allow
additional hard drives to be added without the need for buying a whole
different unit. Sadly, it seems that the implementation is less than
the sum of its concepts, although I have to say I was intrigued by one
aspect of its direct-to-MP3 recording of FM radio. By using a service
called HiSi ("Hear it. Save it.") the Neuros is able to identify -
after being plugged back into your computer - songs you've recorded
from the radio by comparing short audio snippets to those in HiSi's
database, which returns the correct ID3 tag. It even color codes the
results depending on how certain it is that it's identified the song
correctly.
Unfortunately, that's about the best part. The 20GB Neuros II
is a pretty good value, though - an 80GB model can be had for
just $450.
