Free El Cheapo Optical Mouse 07/14/2004 12:06 PM

hx_jump_bugs.jpg imageBreak out the spamcatcher emails -- Kingston is giving away a free optical mouse (while unknown amount of supplies last) to those that sign up to win a new "HyperX Ultimate Rig" (read: a hot gaming computer). It's for US residents only, though, so if you're one of our lovely foreign readers, you'll just have to cough up the $5 or so to buy a cheapo optical mouse yourself. Why do you need a free, low-quality optical mouse? Because it has a blue LED, of course.

"Wow, it's cool," were the first words of Spymac co-founder Kevin April (AtariST) after plugging in <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productd etails.aspx?pid=027" target="_blank">Microsoft's Optical Mouse by S+arck</a>. But are good looks all this rodent has going for it? Microsoft <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2004/jul04/07-08St arckOMPR.asp" target="_blank">introduced</a> the new mouse by interior and industrial designer, Phillipe Starck, along with a line of special edition mice back in July. <center><img src="http://www.spymac.com/upload/newscat/pic_47.jpg">< ;/center> "People are doing such amazing things with their computers; however, too often the importance of the link between man and machine is underestimated," Starck <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2004/jul04/07-08St arckOMPR.asp" target="_blank">said</a>. "[The mouse we use] defines us just as much as the clothes we wear or the music we listen to. With this in mind, I set out to design an artistic bridge that would help people connect with the technology they use every day. The result is modern and refreshingly simple, and will transform the mouse into a badge item that makes a statement about your taste and personality." If this mouse makes a statement about the users personality, then it would show that the user is simple, sleek and glowing from the inside. The mouse has a similar design as Apple's Pro Mouse, but the S+arck mouse has a scroll wheel and two buttons that run the entire length of the mouse. As for design, the S+arck's silvery-grey colouring does not compliment Apple's consumer line (eMacs, iMacs and iBooks), though it would look quite flashy when hooked up to a PowerBook, PowerMac G5, or when used with a new Apple display. "The First Museum-Quality Mouse" features a blue (or orange) stripe down the middle separating the two buttons. When plugged in, light shines up through the stripe and the scroll wheel to create an ultra-modern blue or orange lighting effect. Compared to older Microsoft mice, this USB-only mouse tracks much smoother, thanks to recent improvements in Microsoft's optical technology. The mouse scrolls nicely; better than the first-generation 5 button <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22 &pcid=f918997d-8a10-49a2-86d4-350fc658f447&type=ovr" target="_blank">IntelliMouse Explorer</a> that I use at home, and better than the two button <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22 &pcid=683c57a7-1f50-442c-ad1d-c262417da635&type=ovr" target="_blank">Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1</a> that I normally use here at work. The mouse doesn't fit as nicely in my hand because of the odd shape, though Microsoft describes the design as a "<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productd etails.aspx?pid=027" target="_blank">unique hemisphere (suitable for both left and right-hand users) that makes [the mouse] feel natural and puts left and right clicking in the palm of your hand.</a>" After using it for one day, the right button began to squeak; not something I would expect from <i>this</i> type of mouse. (No pun intended.) The S+arck optical mouse sells for $34.95. If looks are important to you and if you want a two button optical mouse that compliments the PowerBook, PowerMac or Apple Cinema display, then this is the mouse to buy. Otherwise, any other two button scroll wheel mouse would do, and they would cost less than half of the price. {_seal} If you have a product you would like Spymac to review, please send an email to <a href="mailto:kristie@spymac.com">kristie@spymac.com</a >

Mobile Thieves Getting Picky - Toss Back
Cheapo Phones
06/10/2004 12:50 PM
Street criminals robbing people for their mobile phones is nothing new in the UK. In fact, it's a large percentage of the muggings that occur there. However, it appears that even the mobile phone thieves are getting a bit picky when it comes to just what kind of mobile phones they favor. The latest story is that some women who got mugged discovered that one of their phones just wasn't good enough for the thieves who tossed it back complaining that they had no need for "cheap stuff." It's one thing to be mocked about carrying around an old phone, but when a mugger won't even bother to take it, that's quite an insult.

In 1832, the Swiss crystallographer Louis Albert Necker discovered his famously ambiguous cube, which seems to jump back and forth between two orientations. Given the same raw data -- a particular arrangement of a dozen line segments -- our brains find different ways to interpret it. ... The real integration challenge resides inside our heads. There is no single frame of reference for data. [Full story at Infoworld.com]
Apparently I've used this Necker analogy before. But it aptly describes what we see happening this week, for example, as Doug Purdy, Ted Neward, Dare Obasanjo, and others bat around the implications of DataSets, doc/literal SOAP messages, and hierarchical vs. relational storage. ...

Kensington Optical Elite

Kensington Optical Elite 03/11/2003 09:44 AM
The other day I asked what’s the best optical mouse, and I got a bunch of comments.

So... what did I end up with?

Here’s how the decision process went.

1. The feedback I got suggested there are three great mouse makers: Kensington, Microsoft, and Logitech.

2. My instinct is as always to support the little guy, so Microsoft was provisionally eliminated as a choice.

3. Then the feedback I got, and the research I did, suggested that Kensington has better Mac OS X software and support than Logitech. So I chose Kensington.

4. Then—how to choose a specific mouse? I wanted one in the $20 - $50 range that had at least two buttons and a scroll wheel. It had to be optical, of course (that was the whole point). Trackpads not allowed. And, of course, it had to not be completely ugly. (Hyper-concern with aesthetics is the mark of a good Mac user.)

This left just a few mice to choose from. I chose the Kensington Optical Elite.

There were some runners-up—the PocketMouse Pro, for instance.

But I’ve been totally happy with the Optical Elite.

Mars telecom goes optical

Mars telecom goes optical 09/16/2004 09:28 AM
David Pescovitz: NASA scientists are developing a laser link from Mars to Earth that's ten times faster than current radio frequency systems. According to an article in New Scientist, the laser will transmit up to 30 million bits per second at a lower power and mass compared to traditional wireless approaches.
"That leap in capacity is due to the different wavelengths of light carrying the data. The laser will use infrared light with a wavelength of 1.06 microns, which is thousands of times shorter than radio waves. Since all light travels at the same speed through space, shorter wavelengths carry more information in the same time."
Of course, clouds present a problem for optical communications. The beam will also be a few hundred kilometers wide and very faint by the time it reaches Earth, making the signal tricky to pick up. Still, a fully-functional system is expected to make a trip to the Red Planet in 2009 on board the Mars Telecommunications Orbiter. Maybe Xeni can ride along too. Link
