Nokia LifeBlog Beta Released

Nokia LifeBlog Beta Released

Nokia LifeBlog Beta Released 07/14/2004 12:05 PM

nokia_lifeblog_.jpg imageNokia has released a free beta version of its LifeBlog software for download, new software designed for quickly adding pictures, text, and movies to your own personal blog. While they say it "works best with the Nokia 7610 phone" (sadly, not yet available in the US), there is an outside change it might work with another phone -- they list the Nokia 6630, specifically. If any of our European readers have already gotten a hold of a 7610 or 6630 and want to write up their a quick review/preview of the LifeBlog software, we certainly would be happy to read it.

Nokia Updates Lifebl0g

Nokia Updates Lifebl0g 12/24/2004 12:16 PM

lifeblog15.jpg imageNokia has updated their blogging software for Series 60 phones, "Lifeblog," to version 1.5. Improvements include the ability to back up you data to a CD or DVD (using your PC, of course, not your phone) and an improved interface for looking through your content and making edits.

Technically Lifeblog is a Euro-only application, although there's likely nothing stopping you from using the software, if you can find a way to purchase it. The upgrade is free for existing users.

LifeBlog goes beta

LifeBlog goes beta 07/08/2004 01:54 PM

For those of you living in a cave - LifeBlog is Nokia's - well just go check it out. This is major stuff folks - not because it's that good or revolutionary - but because it comes from a hardware vendor!

"OH MY GOD" - you mean software might help us sell hardware? I wonder if that Joi's doing? He's certainly been spending enough time in Helsinki.

But me - no - I NEVER get invited to Helsinki. The last time I bitched about that - I got a phone call from nobody less than the main cult-man himself - CLAY SHIRKY!

How knows - maybe thsi post will get the godhead himself to ping me.

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

Great Lifebl0g write up

Great Lifebl0g write up 04/08/2005 05:08 AM

Giles Turnball has a great indepth report of Nokia's Lifeblog - which I am a tester for.

It highlights Lifeblog's daddy - Christian Lindholm - who I met at ETech - hanging with Russel Beattie.

Though I woudl do it differently Lifeblog is a new kind of tool, partially inspired (I'm sure) by Joi Ito's life - as he's teh one who's fingerprints are all over this deal.

Lifeblog currently only works with TypePad and MT.

But it's cool - despite that.

Leo 3.11 beta 1 released

Leo 3.11 beta 1 released 02/18/2003 09:01 AM
Leo is: 1) a programmers, outlining editor and a flexible browser, 2) a literate programming tool, 3) a data organizer and project manager. 4) fully scriptable using Python, 5) Portable. Leo.py will run on any platform with Python and Tk/tcl. This release includes a significant number of bugfixes and enhancements. leo.py 3.11 beta 1 is now available at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/leo/ leo.py requires Python 2.1 or above and tcl/tk 8.3 or above. The highlights of 3.11: ----------------------- ** Leo finally supports unicode properly. This solves a lot of problems. - New @encoding directives specifies encoding for derived files. - New settings specify default encodings for .leo and derived files. - Derived files specify encodings used to create them. ** A new plugin architecture for customizing Leo. (A major improvement.) - New commands: - Toggle Angle Brackets. - Insert Time/Date (in headline or body text). - Go To First/Last Node, Parent, Next/Previous Sibling. - Write Missing @file Nodes. - Expand/Contract Node. - Improved commands: - Expand/Contract commands now operate on the selected tree. ( A major improvement) - Sort Siblings command can now sort top-level nodes. - Leo now allows multiple writes of cloned nodes. (Useful when different @path directives are in effect.) - Other improvements: - Improved syntax coloring for html and xml. - Leo scrolls partially visible headlines into full view. - Added "Replace tabs with spaces" checkbox in Prefs panel. - Added install script for Linux. - New settings in leoConfig.leo/.txt. - Colors for Show Invisibles command and body_insertion_cursor - Settings affecting when control-drags start. - Defaults for unicode (see above). - Many other bug fixes and improvements. Quote of the month ------------------ I only have one week of Leo experience but I already know it will be my default IDE/project manager. I have seen several old threads on c.l.python where people complain about the lack of a project manager for the free/standard Python IDE's like Idle. Leo clearly solves that problem and in a way that commercial tools can't touch -- Marshall Parsons What is Leo? ------------ - A programmer's editor, an outlining editor and a flexible browser. - A literate programming tool, compatible with noweb and CWEB. - A data organizer and project manager. Leo provides multiple views of projects within a single outline. - Fully scriptable using Python. Leo saves its files in XML format. - Portable. leo.py is 100% pure Python. - Open Software, distributed under the Python License. Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W and Nokia

09/23/2004 07:13 AM

headset_gps_nkoi.jpg imageAnd last but not least (if you're reading from the bottom up; otherwise, welcome to the Nokia posts!) are these two new peripherals from Nokia, a new Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W headset with a 6 hour talk time, and this Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W that also connects to your phone or PDA via Bluetooth (the GPS may not actually be new - it seems sort of familiar - but I don't exactly recall hearing about it before). The GPS unit uses the same battery and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing charge to go along with it.

The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't scheduled until Q1 2005.

Nokia 6670

Nokia 6670 09/23/2004 07:13 AM

nokia_6670.jpg imageNokia rarely announces just one product at a time, and today was no exception. In addition to that Remote Camera, they also have revealed the Nokia 6670, a tri-band phone (in both US and Everybody Else tunings), that looks a lot like a 7610 without the strange keypad and the gussied up case. Instead the 6670 is a fairly plain looking model - although appealing, in its way, as long as you don't mind the New Era Nokia asymmetric styling - that runs Series 60 and has a one-megapixel camera.

Nokia's plan is all starting to make a lot more sense to me now. Release the eye-catching, weirdo phones first, then release a follow up model that people with actually buy. I don't understand why that's their plan, but that seems to be it.
