WiFi apples and oranges
WiFi apples and oranges
03/22/2005 03:33 PMThe Economist has an article (subscribers only) quoting me about municipal
WiFi networks, like the one Philadelphia is proposing. Local phone
and cable companies have been fighting these proposals, even pushing
legislation banning cities from deploying broadband connecting for
their residents.
The point I make in the piece is that a city-wide WiFi cloud in an
urban area is not identical to the wired broadband networks companies
like Verizon and Comcast are deploying. In other words, free or cheap
WiFi municipal access doesn't automatically kill the private broadband
market, because these municipal systems don't provide the same
throughput, reliability, or indoor coverage. They help at the
margins, for areas that are under-served by the existing broadband
options or where those options are too expensive. And they expand the
scope of broadband access beyond the home, by covering outdoor areas
and public places. They just aren't equivalent to what the private
sector is building, and shouldn't be precluded on that assumption.
In case it's not clear from the piece, I'm well aware that nothing
about WiFi technically prevents it from being used as a broadband
access technology, across large distances. Hundreds of wireless ISPs,
mostly in rural areas, use it to provide connectivity where cable
modems and DSL aren't available. In a city, though, the environment
is different. WiFi can be a piece of the broadband puzzle there too,
which is why municipalities are getting involved. I think that's a
great thing. However, we should be clear on exactly what capabilities
those systems provide.

Apples sues three in Mac OS Tiger
internet leak
12/22/2004 01:26 AMThree individuals are being sued by Apple for illegally distributing
test copies of the Tiger OS on a file-sharing website, Reuters is
reporting today.
Apple claims in its suit that two different versions of Mac OS X,
code-named Tiger, were made available on the Web on or about Oct. 30
and Dec. 8 of this year. The company has said it will ship Mac OS X
Tiger in the first half of 2005, after previewing it to the Mac
community at a trade show last June.
Apple said in its lawsuit that the two different versions of Tiger
were made publicly available by the men, who were members of the Apple
Developer Connection. Members of Apple Developer Connection receive
advance copies of Apple software under strict confidentiality
agreements, which we take very seriously to protect our intellectual
property, the company said in a statement.
According to the suit, the men released the software on a Web site
that employs BitTorrent file-sharing technology, which is used to
rapidly distribute large files of electronic data, and is also widely
used to distribute pirated copies of motion pictures via the Internet.
Yesterday, Apple filed a lawsuit against unnamed individuals who
leaked details about new products by posting information on the
Internet.

New York's golden age
01/02/2005 06:28 PMThe NY Times recently asked a few New Yorkers which era they would nominate as New York's golden
age. Like Greg, I thought Bill T. Jones' answer was the
most penetrating:
Right after 9/11.
New York had a true reappraisal
of itself at a tragic and introspective moment. New York had the
attention of the whole world; it was a frightening moment. But the
world was ready to follow, to assist.
It lasted a few months. We
were vulnerable and open to the rest of the world, and we were ready
for a change. There was a chance to ask questions, and it was a time
when we were forced to do so.
But it didn't happen. There wasn't
a true conversation about what America means to the rest of the world
or about why New York was chosen. It was an opportunity. And then the
politicians took it.
That last sentence is a doozy, isn't it? It saddens me to think
that in times when we need to have open and honest communication to
heal wounds and investigate opportunities, we instead let ourselves
get caught up with the marketing of powerful men.

I'm glad Rio is actually going to push their new 5GB hard
disk-based Carbon player a bit instead of just letting it languish in
the market - it looks like a pretty solid product (I haven't used it
yet). To that end, they're running a special promotion for the first
500 people to order the new $250 player that includes a
custom-engraved, numbered back, a free shipping upgrade to 2 day air,
and a 3 month/20 track download option from Napster. Oh, and lest we
forget, a limited edition collectors box that looks suspiciously like
someone else's. It might not be enough to sway undecided purchasers,
but if you were already leaning that way, might as well give it a
whirl.

Were those the golden years?
Were those the golden years?
06/05/2005 11:34 PMI just finished reading Kottke's new piece, A whole new internet?, and
it reminded me of a moment in 2002, sitting in a basement at a great
conference organized by Kevin Werbach in the depth of the tech
recession. While around us were depression, unemployment and
nay-saying about the internet, in that room was amazing creativity and
energy -- people like Mike Masnick, Ben and Mena Trott, Dan Gillmor,
Marc Canter, Dave Sifry and many others all excited about the ideas
they had and the things they were working on, and all eager to share
them. Now, except for the irrepressible Mr. Cantor, the projects have
become businesses, and the proprietors much quieter. People are still
working on cool stuff, but they are talking and sharing less, except
for marketing mode. I know my writing has suffered, both because of
constraints on what I feel comfortable writing about here, and just
because of the lack of time to write. Business is booming, but it is
less fun. Is Kottke right, and will we look back at 2002-2004 as the
golden years of the internet, pre-Web 2.0?...
Golden Tech
Golden Tech
07/15/2004 12:17 AMSo how exactly do you work with seniors wanting to learn technology.
Boy, that is a tough question. While there is no single correct
answer, I did find some good advice from a man named Gary Baker;
Here’s a quick list:
1) The first thing to do is assess their current level of ability.
That way you won’t start over their heads.
2) Then find out what they want to be able to do - it’s
pointless and confusing to teach a lot of things at once so focus on
what they want to be able to do, for example send an email to their
friend in Australia.
3) Break it up into lessons and only focus on one thing per lesson,
unless it’s a very minor skill in which case you could do more.
Plan your lesson, and allow plenty of time for it.
4) Show them something once, then get them to do it. Then get them to
do it again. And again. Then show them the next step. Repeat as above.
Then get them to do both steps one after the other. Then show them the
third step, and start again. It’s laborious but it’s very
effective and they’re less likely to forget what they’ve
learn.
5) Give them plenty of time. Elderly people in particular want to do
things in their own time and at their own pace, so let them.
